A Bodhisattva Arrives from the Northwest

At that time, in the northwest, beyond an ocean of worlds as numerous as unspeakably many fine motes of dust in every buddha-land, there was a world named Vairocana Vow Maṇi-King Treasury, whose buddha was named Universal Light Most Excellent Sumeru King. In that buddha's own assembly there was a bodhisattva named Vow-Wisdom Light Banner, who, together with bodhisattvas as numerous as fine motes of dust in an ocean of worlds, came toward the place where the Buddha was, and in thought after thought, from every one of his own major and minor marks, every one of his own pores, and every part of his own body, sent forth: clouds of the very images of every tathāgata across the three times; clouds of the images of every bodhisattva; clouds of the images of every tathāgata's own assembly; clouds of the images of every tathāgata's own transformation-body; clouds of the images of every tathāgata's own body born in past lives; clouds of the images of every śrāvaka and pratyekabuddha; clouds of the images of every tathāgata's own site of awakening; clouds of the images of every tathāgata's own spiritual transformation; clouds of the images of every ruler of the world; and clouds of the images of every pure land — filling the whole of empty space. Having arrived where the Buddha was, they bowed in reverence at his feet, and then, in the northwest, conjured a maṇi-jewel adorned pavilion universally illuminating the ten directions, together with a lion-seat of jeweled lotus-treasury universally illuminating the world; covered their own bodies with nets of unsurpassed light-pearls; wore a crown of universal-light maṇi jewel; and sat down cross-legged there together with their own retinues.
