A Bodhisattva Arrives from Above

The tenth and final arrival completes the procession with the richest offering of all: within his own body, this bodhisattva manifests every buddha past, present, and future, and the ocean of every past narrative behind the ten pāramitās — giving, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, and more — answering, in a single act, the very request this whole fascicle opened with.

The Request from the Opening, Answered

Fascicle sixty opened with the entire assembly's shared, unspoken wish that the Buddha reveal his own past pāramitās, vows, and practices. This tenth and final bodhisattva does exactly that — not in words, but by manifesting the whole of that history within his own body, completing the procession from all ten directions at once.

Ru-Yi Translation

At that time, above, beyond an ocean of worlds as numerous as unspeakably many fine motes of dust in every buddha-land, there was a world named Proclaiming the Buddha's Own Lineage Without End, whose buddha was named Universal Wisdom-Wheel Light Sound. In that buddha's own assembly there was a bodhisattva named Dharma-Realm Differentiation Vow, who, together with bodhisattvas as numerous as fine motes of dust in an ocean of worlds, set out from that very site of awakening and came toward this sahā world, to the place where Śākyamuni Buddha was, and within every one of his own major and minor marks, every one of his own pores, every part of his own body, every one of his own limbs and joints, every one of his own ornaments, and every one of his own garments, manifested Vairocana and every buddha of the past, every buddha of the future, those who have already received a prediction of buddhahood, and those who have not yet received one, and every present buddha throughout every land in the ten directions together with their own assemblies. He also manifested the ocean of every past narrative of practicing the pāramitā of giving, together with every one of those who received that giving; the ocean of every past narrative of practicing the pāramitā of moral discipline; the ocean of every past narrative of practicing the pāramitā of patience, even while his own limbs were being cut away, with a mind that remained utterly unmoved; the ocean of every past narrative of practicing the pāramitā of diligence with valiant courage that never turned back; the ocean of every past narrative of seeking the ocean of every tathāgata's own pāramitā of meditative absorption and bringing it to accomplishment; the ocean of every past narrative of seeking the dharma accomplished through the wheel of dharma turned by every buddha, arousing a valiant mind that renounced everything entirely; the ocean of every past narrative of delighting in seeing every buddha, delighting in practicing every bodhisattva path, and delighting in transforming the entire realm of sentient beings; the ocean of every past narrative of every great bodhisattva vow ever raised, pure and adorned; the ocean of every past narrative of the bodhisattva's own pāramitā of power accomplished with valiant purity; and the ocean of every past narrative of every bodhisattva's own pāramitā of wisdom cultivated to perfection. Every one of these oceans of past narratives, all of them together, filled the vast dharma-realm entirely. Having arrived where the Buddha was, they bowed in reverence at his feet, and then, above, conjured a pavilion adorned entirely with vajra treasury, together with a lion-seat of sapphire vajra-king lotus-treasury; covered their own bodies with nets of every jeweled light maṇi king; wore, as the bright pearl in their own topknot, a maṇi jewel king proclaiming the names of every tathāgata across the three times; and sat down cross-legged there together with their own retinues.

Reading note — Ru-Yi Meditation Center

亦現過去行檀那波羅蜜……亦現過去一切菩薩所修圓滿智波羅蜜諸本事海 — the ten pāramitās named one by one, from giving through wisdom. This is the only one of the ten arrivals addressed directly to Śākyamuni's own sahā world rather than simply to "the place where the Buddha was," and its offering is precisely what the entire assembly asked for at the start of this fascicle: not a symbol of the Buddha's past, but that past itself, made visible.

Part 847 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty. Part 848 turns to what all ten of these arriving bodhisattvas share in common — a single origin in Samantabhadra's own practice and vow, and a set of qualities described in one continuous passage.
