Fascicle Sixty-One Begins
Fascicle sixty-one opens with Samantabhadra Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva returning to the very samādhi the Buddha entered at the start of this chapter, unpacking its meaning through ten dharma-phrases — the first of unspeakably many more, every one of them belonging to the tathāgata's own domain of wisdom.
Returning to the Lion's Stretching-Forth Samādhi
Fascicle sixty ended in devotion; fascicle sixty-one opens in explanation. Samantabhadra now returns to the very samādhi the Buddha entered many parts ago — the act that began this entire transformation — and unpacks it through ten dharma-phrases, each one describing something held complete within a single mote of dust.
爾時，普賢菩薩摩訶薩普觀一切菩薩眾會，以等法界方便、等虛空界方便、等眾生界方便，等三世、等一切劫、等一切眾生業、等一切眾生欲、等一切眾生解、等一切眾生根、等一切眾生成熟時、等一切法光影方便，為諸菩薩，以十種法句開發、顯示、照明、演說此師子頻申三昧。何等為十？所謂：演說能示現等法界一切佛剎微塵中，諸佛出興次第、諸剎成壞次第法句；演說能示現等虛空界一切佛剎中，盡未來劫讚歎如來功德音聲法句；演說能示現等虛空界一切佛剎中，如來出世無量無邊成正覺門法句；演說能示現等虛空界一切佛剎中，佛坐道場菩薩眾會法句；演說於一切毛孔，念念出現等三世一切佛變化身充滿法界法句；演說能令一身充滿十方一切剎海，平等顯現法句；演說能令一切諸境界中，普現三世諸佛神變法句；演說能令一切佛剎微塵中，普現三世一切佛剎微塵數佛種種神變經無量劫法句；演說能令一切毛孔出生三世一切諸佛大願海音，盡未來劫開發化導一切菩薩法句；演說能令佛師子座量同法界，菩薩眾會道場莊嚴等無差別，盡未來劫轉於種種微妙法輪法句。佛子！此十為首，有不可說佛剎微塵數法句，皆是如來智慧境界。
At that time, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva universally observed the entire bodhisattva assembly, and, through skillful means equal to the dharma-realm, skillful means equal to the realm of empty space, skillful means equal to the realm of sentient beings, equal to the three times, equal to every kalpa, equal to every sentient being's own karma, equal to every sentient being's own desire, equal to every sentient being's own understanding, equal to every sentient being's own faculty, equal to every sentient being's own moment of maturation, and skillful means equal to the light and shadow of every dharma, opened up, revealed, illuminated, and proclaimed this Lion's Stretching-Forth Samādhi for the sake of the bodhisattvas, by means of ten kinds of dharma-phrase. What are these ten? Namely: the dharma-phrase proclaiming what is able to manifest, within every mote of dust in every buddha-land equal to the dharma-realm, the sequence in which every buddha rises and appears, and the sequence in which every land forms and is destroyed; the dharma-phrase proclaiming what is able to manifest, within every buddha-land equal to the realm of empty space, the sound praising the tathāgata's own merit throughout every future kalpa; the dharma-phrase proclaiming what is able to manifest, within every buddha-land equal to the realm of empty space, the measureless, boundless gateways through which every tathāgata appears in the world and attains perfect awakening; the dharma-phrase proclaiming what is able to manifest, within every buddha-land equal to the realm of empty space, every buddha seated at the site of awakening together with the bodhisattva assembly; the dharma-phrase proclaiming how, from within every pore, moment after moment, the transformation-bodies of every buddha across the three times appear, filling the entire dharma-realm; the dharma-phrase proclaiming what is able to cause a single body to fill every ocean of lands in the ten directions, manifesting equally throughout; the dharma-phrase proclaiming what is able to cause the spiritual transformations of every buddha across the three times to be universally manifested within every domain; the dharma-phrase proclaiming what is able to cause, within every mote of dust in every buddha-land, the various spiritual transformations of buddhas as numerous as motes of dust in every buddha-land across the three times to be universally manifested, continuing through measureless kalpas; the dharma-phrase proclaiming what is able to cause every pore to give rise to the ocean-sound of every buddha's own great vow across the three times, opening up and guiding every bodhisattva throughout every future kalpa; and the dharma-phrase proclaiming what is able to cause a buddha's own lion-seat to equal the dharma-realm in measure, the bodhisattva assembly's own adornment of the site of awakening to be equal without any difference, and every kind of wondrous wheel of dharma to be turned throughout every future kalpa. Buddha's children! With these ten at the head, there are unspeakably many dharma-phrases, as numerous as motes of dust in every buddha-land, and every one of them belongs to the domain of the tathāgata's own wisdom.
師子頻申三昧 — the Lion's Stretching-Forth Samādhi. This is the very same samādhi the Buddha entered many parts ago, at the moment the great pavilion first began to grow vast — the sūtra now doubles back to explain in careful, structured detail what that single act of entering actually contained, ten dharma-phrases standing as only the head of an unspeakable number more.
