Samantabhadra's Verses Restate the Samādhi

Wishing to proclaim the same meaning once more, Samantabhadra surveys the Buddha, the assembly, and the inconceivable equality of every buddha across the three times, then compresses everything the prose just described into ten tightly wound verses.

Oceans of Lands Within Every Pore

The first three stanzas each return to the same opening phrase — within every single pore — before letting it hold something new each time: a tathāgata seated with his own assembly, a buddha's own seat of awakening pervading the dharma-realm, and buddhas beyond counting teaching Samantabhadra's own practice.

聽聞一切法;

Ru-Yi Translation

At that time, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, wishing to proclaim this meaning once more, sustained by the Buddha's own spiritual power, observed the tathāgata, observed the assembly, observed the inconceivable domain of every buddha, observed the boundless samādhis of every buddha, observed the inconceivable ocean of every world, observed the inconceivable, illusion-like wisdom of every dharma, observed how every buddha across the three times is, inconceivably, entirely equal, and observed every measureless, boundless dharma of language — and then spoke these verses:

Within every single pore, there are oceans of lands as numerous as motes of dust, and in every one of them a tathāgata sits, complete with his own bodhisattva assembly.

Within every single pore, there are measureless oceans of lands, and in each a buddha occupies his own seat of awakening, pervading the entire dharma-realm in just this way.

Within every single pore, there are buddhas as numerous as motes of dust in every land, surrounded by their own bodhisattva assembly, teaching Samantabhadra's own practice.

A buddha seated in a single land fills every world in the ten directions, and measureless clouds of bodhisattvas all come to gather at that very place.

An ocean of bodhisattvas' own merit, as numerous as motes of dust in a hundred million lands, arises together from within the assembly, pervading and filling every world in the ten directions.

All of them abide in Samantabhadra's own practice, all of them journey through the ocean of the dharma-realm, universally manifesting in every land, entering equally into every buddha's own assembly.

They sit securely within every land, listening to every dharma; within every single land, they cultivate every practice across a hundred million kalpas.

The practice the bodhisattvas cultivate is the universal, bright practice of the ocean of dharma; they enter into the ocean of the great vow, and abide upon the ground of the buddha's own domain.

Having fully penetrated Samantabhadra's own practice, they give rise to every buddha's own dharma; endowed with the ocean of the buddha's own merit, they broadly manifest deeds of spiritual superknowledge.

Clouds of their own bodies, equal in number to motes of dust, fill and pervade every land, universally raining down the dharma of ambrosia, causing every being to abide in the buddha's own path.

一一毛孔中 — within every single pore. This exact phrase opens the first three stanzas in a row, each time filling that single pore with something different — a tathāgata and his assembly, a buddha's own seat pervading the dharma-realm, buddhas beyond counting teaching Samantabhadra's own practice — as if turning the same small aperture toward a new view of the same vast reality each time.

Part 868 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-one. Part 869 turns to the Buddha himself, who emits great light from between his own brows to let the bodhisattva assembly directly witness what these verses have just described.
