The Buddha Emits Light from His Own Brows
Rather than continuing to describe the samādhi in words, the Buddha now lets the assembly see it directly: a great, named light emerges from between his own brows, and within it every land, and every possible kind of being in every possible kind of place, comes into view at once.
Every Realm, Every Kind of Being
What this light reveals is not confined to buddha-lands and awakened bodhisattvas; it extends outward through the palaces of devas, nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kiṃnaras, and mahoragas, all the way down to ordinary human villages and royal cities — every possible category of being, in every possible kind of place.
At that time, the World-Honored One, wishing to cause the bodhisattvas to abide securely in the tathāgata's own vast Lion's Stretching-Forth Samādhi, emitted great light from the mark of the white curl between his own brows, this light being named: The Gate Universally Illuminating the Dharma-Realm Across the Three Times, accompanied by unspeakably many lesser lights, as numerous as motes of dust in every buddha-land, as its own retinue, universally illuminating every buddha-land within the ocean of every world in the ten directions. At that time, the bodhisattva assembly in the Jeta Grove saw completely that, within every single mote of dust in every buddha-land throughout the entire dharma-realm and realm of empty space, there were, in each one, buddha-lands as numerous as motes of dust in every buddha-land, each with its own name, its own color, its own purity, its own abode, and its own form. Within every one of these lands, there was a great bodhisattva seated upon a lion-seat at the site of awakening, attaining perfect awakening, surrounded before and behind by the bodhisattva assembly, with every ruler of the world making offerings to him; or they saw, within an assembly as vast as unspeakably many buddha-lands, a wondrous sound emerging and filling the entire dharma-realm, turning the true wheel of dharma; or they saw him within the palaces of devas, the palaces of nāgas, the palaces of yakṣas, and the palaces of gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kiṃnaras, mahoragas, humans, and non-humans, or within human villages, towns, and settlements, and great royal capitals, manifesting every kind of lineage, every kind of name, every kind of body, every kind of appearance, and every kind of light, abiding in every kind of dignified manner, entering every kind of samādhi, and manifesting every kind of spiritual transformation, at times himself speaking in every kind of language, and at times causing various bodhisattvas to speak every kind of dharma in every kind of language within every kind of assembly.
從眉間白毫相放大光明 — emitted great light from the mark of the white curl between his own brows. This same mark, the ūrṇā, was named earlier in this fascicle's story as one of the sources of light offered by an arriving bodhisattva's own cloud; here it becomes the actual source of this vision, the sūtra quietly making good on an offering made many parts before.
Part 869 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-one. Part 870 turns to why only certain beings in this very assembly are able to see any of it — a matter, once again, of causes planted long before this moment.
