Mañjuśrī's Verses

Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva now rises to restate, in thirteen verses, everything the clouds of adornment have just shown — jeweled trees giving forth wondrous sound, transformation-bodies within every pore of the tathāgata, and the entire ten directions gathered into a single grove.

Every Transformation-Body, Like Samantabhadra

Among these thirteen verses, one stands out for naming a specific likeness: the inconceivable transformation-bodies appearing within every single pore of the tathāgata are each said to resemble the great bodhisattva Samantabhadra himself — the very figure whose own explanation of the samādhi opened this entire fascicle.

Ru-Yi Translation

At that time, Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva, sustained by the Buddha's own spiritual power, wishing to proclaim once more these very spiritual transformations within the Jeta Grove, surveyed the ten directions and spoke these verses:

You should behold this Jeta Grove: through the Buddha's own awesome, spiritual power, boundless without limit, every adornment has been manifested, filling the entire dharma-realm in the ten directions.

Every land in the ten directions, adorned greatly with boundless kinds of ornament, appears clearly and distinctly, its every form and image displayed within this very seat and domain.

From the pores of the buddha's children emerge every kind of adorning, jeweled, blazing cloud, and the tathāgata's own wondrous sound is given forth, filling every land in the ten directions completely.

Within jeweled trees and flowers a wondrous body appears, its own form and color equal to Brahmā's own king; rising from meditative absorption, it walks forth, its every advance and pause constantly still.

Within every single pore of the tathāgata, inconceivable transformation-bodies constantly appear, every one like the great bodhisattva Samantabhadra himself, adorned beautifully with every kind of mark.

Within the empty space above the Jeta Grove, every ornament gives forth a wondrous sound, universally proclaiming the bodhisattvas of the three times, who have accomplished the entire ocean of merit.

The jeweled trees within the Jeta Grove likewise send forth measureless, wondrous sounds, proclaiming every living being's own ocean of karma, each one differing from the rest.

Every domain throughout this grove entirely manifests every tathāgata of the three times, each one giving rise to great spiritual superknowledge, as numerous as motes of dust in every ocean of lands in the ten directions.

Every land throughout the ten directions, as numerous as motes of dust in every ocean of lands, enters entirely into the tathāgata's own pores, their every adornment appearing in due sequence for all to behold.

Every ornament manifests a buddha, their number equal to every sentient being throughout the world, each one emitting great light, transforming every kind of living being exactly as fits each one.

Fragrant flames, every kind of flower, and every jeweled treasury, every excellent, wondrous cloud of adornment — none of them fails to be as vast as empty space itself, filling every land in the ten directions.

Every buddha across the three times in the ten directions, and every one of their own wondrous, adorned sites of awakening, appear clearly, every single form and image, within the domain of this very grove.

Every one of Samantabhadra's own buddha-children, and the lands adorned across an ocean of hundreds of thousands of kalpas, measureless in number, equal to every sentient being — there is none of them that cannot be seen within this very grove.

皆如普賢大菩薩 — every one like the great bodhisattva Samantabhadra himself. This entire fascicle opened with Samantabhadra explaining the Lion's Stretching-Forth Samādhi; here, in Mañjuśrī's own verses, the tathāgata's own countless transformation-bodies are described taking that very same form, as if the samādhi's explanation and its visible fruit had quietly become the same thing.

Part 882 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-one. Part 883 turns to the bodhisattvas entering these very samādhis, and the innumerable gateways of teaching they open for sentient beings as a result.
