Śāriputra Praises Mañjuśrī's Own Qualities
Walking the road south, Śāriputra turns to the monk Sea-Awakening and points out, one observation at a time, ten specific qualities of Mañjuśrī — his own light, his own road, the treasuries that emerge in his wake — closing on an honor paid to him by every buddha in the ten directions.
Light from Every Buddha's Own Brow
The final observation in this list surpasses every one before it: whenever any buddha across the ten directions is about to speak the dharma, each of them sends light from the very mark between their own brows to illuminate Mañjuśrī specifically, entering through the crown of his own head.
爾時，尊者舍利弗在行道中觀諸比丘，告海覺言：「海覺！汝可觀察文殊師利菩薩清淨之身相好莊嚴，一切天人莫能思議。汝可觀察文殊師利圓光映徹，令無量眾生發歡喜心。汝可觀察文殊師利光網莊嚴，除滅眾生無量苦惱。汝可觀察文殊師利眾會具足，皆是菩薩往昔善根之所攝受。汝可觀察文殊師利所行之路，左右八步，平坦莊嚴。汝可觀察文殊師利所住之處，周迴十方常有道場隨逐而轉。汝可觀察文殊師利所行之路，具足無量福德莊嚴，左右兩邊有大伏藏，種種珍寶自然而出。汝可觀察文殊師利曾供養佛，善根所流，一切樹間出莊嚴藏。汝可觀察文殊師利，諸世間主雨供具雲，頂禮恭敬以為供養。汝可觀察文殊師利，十方一切諸佛如來將說法時，悉放眉間白毫相光來照其身，從頂上入。」
At that time, the Venerable Śāriputra, while traveling along the road, observed the monks, and spoke to Sea-Awakening, saying: "Sea-Awakening! You should observe how Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva's own pure body is adorned with every excellent mark, something no deva or human is able to conceive. You should observe how Mañjuśrī's own perfect halo of light shines through with brilliant clarity, causing measureless sentient beings to give rise to a joyful mind. You should observe how Mañjuśrī's own net of light is adorned, extinguishing the measureless suffering and affliction of sentient beings. You should observe how Mañjuśrī's own assembly is complete in every way, every one of them gathered in through the bodhisattva's own roots of goodness planted in ages past. You should observe how the very road Mañjuśrī walks, eight paces to the left and right, is level and adorned. You should observe how, wherever Mañjuśrī abides, a site of awakening constantly follows and turns along with him, circling through all ten directions. You should observe how the very road Mañjuśrī walks is fully adorned with measureless merit, with great hidden treasuries on both sides, every kind of rare treasure emerging of its own accord. You should observe how, because Mañjuśrī has made offerings to buddhas in the past, the flow of his own roots of goodness causes adorning treasuries to emerge from among every tree. You should observe how every ruler of the world rains down clouds of offering-implements upon Mañjuśrī, bowing their heads in reverent respect to make offerings to him. You should observe how, whenever any buddha or tathāgata throughout the ten directions is about to speak the dharma, each of them emits the light of the mark of the white curl between their own brows to illuminate Mañjuśrī's own body, entering through the crown of his own head."
十方一切諸佛如來將說法時，悉放眉間白毫相光來照其身，從頂上入 — whenever any buddha or tathāgata throughout the ten directions is about to speak the dharma, each of them emits the light of the mark of the white curl between their own brows to illuminate Mañjuśrī's own body. Śāriputra saves this observation for last, and its scale sets it apart from every one before it: not one buddha's own gesture of honor, but the constant practice of every buddha throughout the ten directions, every single time any of them is about to teach.
