Ten Kinds of Tireless Mind

Answering the monks' own vow, Mañjuśrī teaches ten kinds of mind that never wearies — in gathering roots of goodness, in serving buddhas, in seeking dharma, in practicing every pāramitā — closing on a single being's maturation multiplied across the whole realm of sentient beings, still without a trace of fatigue.

A Mind That Never Wearies

Each of the ten items names an entire path of practice — gathering merit, serving every buddha, mastering every pāramitā, purifying every land, teaching every being — and attaches to it the same four words: the mind knows no weariness. The refrain itself becomes the teaching.

At that time, Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva said to the monks: "Monks! If a good son or good daughter accomplishes ten kinds of dharma that lead toward the Great Vehicle, they will then be able to swiftly enter the tathāgata's own ground — how much more so the bodhisattva's own ground! What are these ten? Namely: in gathering every root of goodness, their mind knows no weariness. In beholding every buddha and attending upon and making offerings to them, their mind knows no weariness. In seeking every buddha's own dharma, their mind knows no weariness. In practicing every pāramitā, their mind knows no weariness. In accomplishing every bodhisattva samādhi, their mind knows no weariness. In entering, one after another, every one of the three times, their mind knows no weariness. In universally adorning and purifying every buddha-land throughout the ten directions, their mind knows no weariness. In teaching, transforming, and taming every sentient being, their mind knows no weariness. In accomplishing the bodhisattva's own practice throughout every land and every eon, their mind knows no weariness. For the sake of bringing a single sentient being to maturity, they cultivate pāramitās as numerous as every mote of dust in every buddha-land, and accomplish the tathāgata's own ten powers; and so, one after another, for the sake of bringing every realm of sentient beings to maturity, they accomplish every one of the tathāgata's own powers — and in all this their mind knows no weariness.

為成熟一眾生故……如是次第,為成熟一切眾生界 — for the sake of bringing a single sentient being to maturity … and so, one after another, for the sake of bringing every realm of sentient beings to maturity. The tenth item scales the whole list at once: the same tireless effort spent on one being is asked to repeat itself across the entire realm of sentient beings, without the mind ever registering fatigue.

What Ten Kinds of Faith Give Rise To

Mañjuśrī closes by naming the consequences of holding these ten minds with deep faith: not a single reward but an entire reordering of a person's own destiny, out of birth and death and into the tathāgata's own family.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Monks! If a good son or good daughter accomplishes deep faith and gives rise to these ten kinds of tireless mind, they will then be able to nurture and grow every root of goodness, abandon and depart from every destiny of birth and death, surpass every worldly lineage, and never fall into the ground of the śrāvaka or the pratyekabuddha; they will be born into the family of every tathāgata, be endowed with every bodhisattva vow, learn every tathāgata's own merit, cultivate every one of the bodhisattva's own practices, attain the tathāgata's own power, subdue every māra and every non-Buddhist teacher, and be able as well to extinguish every affliction, enter the bodhisattva's own ground, and draw near to the tathāgata's own ground."

生一切如來家 — born into the family of every tathāgata. The ten tireless minds are framed here not as a means to some later reward but as the very thing that reconstitutes a person's lineage: away from the destinies of birth and death, and into the tathāgata's own household.
