Fascicle Sixty-One Complete

Hearing Mañjuśrī's teaching, the monks attain a samādhi vast enough to see every buddha and every world in the ten directions at once — and Mañjuśrī closes the fascicle by urging them into Samantabhadra's own practice, the ocean of great vows that purifies mind, body, and finally grants a body that never leaves his own feet even while appearing before every buddha everywhere.

Unobstructed Eye Seeing Every Buddha's Domain

The samādhi's own name announces its scope: every buddha and every world, every being's own past and future lives, every tathāgata's own former-life stories and turnings of the dharma-wheel, all made visible and audible and memorable at once.

At that time, once the monks heard this dharma, they attained a samādhi named: Unobstructed Eye Seeing Every Buddha's Domain. Having attained this samādhi, they saw in full every buddha and tathāgata throughout every measureless, boundless world in the ten directions, together with every one of their own assemblies at the site of awakening; they also saw in full every sentient being in every destiny throughout those worlds in the ten directions; they also saw in full every kind of difference among all those worlds; they also saw in full every mote of dust contained in all those worlds; they also saw in full, within all those worlds, the palaces where every sentient being dwells, adorned with every kind of treasure; and they also heard every kind of voice in which those buddhas and tathāgatas proclaim every dharma, and understood in full every word and every explanation of its meaning; they were also able to observe the faculties and the mental inclinations of every sentient being within those worlds; they were also able to remember ten of every sentient being's own past and future lives within those worlds; they were also able to remember the events of ten past eons and ten future eons within those worlds; they were also able to remember, of those tathāgatas, ten of their own former-life stories, ten attainments of true enlightenment, ten turnings of the dharma-wheel, ten kinds of spiritual power, ten kinds of dharma-teaching, ten kinds of instruction, and ten kinds of eloquence; and they at once accomplished ten thousand minds of awakening, ten thousand samādhis, and ten thousand pāramitās, every one of them entirely pure; they attained the perfect and complete light of great wisdom, and attained the bodhisattva's own ten spiritual powers, soft and subtle, abiding in the mind of awakening, firm and unmoving.

無礙眼見一切佛境界 — Unobstructed Eye Seeing Every Buddha's Domain. Everything the samādhi grants — sight, hearing, memory of others' lives, memory of eons past and future — proceeds from a single named faculty: an eye without obstruction. What such an eye sees is not a single scene but the domain itself, entire.

Into the Ocean of Great Vows

Fascicle sixty-one closes on a chain of consequence, each link named by its own cause: pure vows lead to a pure mind, a pure mind to a pure body, a pure body to lightness and agility, and agility to a spiritual power so complete that these monks can stand before every buddha everywhere without ever once leaving the ground beneath Mañjuśrī's own feet.

Ru-Yi Translation

At that time, Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva urged the monks to abide in Samantabhadra's own practice; and once abiding in Samantabhadra's own practice, to enter the ocean of great vows; and once entering the ocean of great vows, to accomplish the ocean of great vows. Because of accomplishing the ocean of great vows, their minds became pure; because their minds became pure, their bodies became pure; because their bodies became pure, their bodies became light and agile; because their bodies became pure and light and agile, they attained great spiritual power without ever regressing; and because of attaining this spiritual power, without ever departing from beneath Mañjuśrī's own feet, they manifested their own bodies universally at the place of every buddha throughout the ten directions, accomplishing every buddha's own dharma in full completeness.

不離文殊師利足下,普於十方一切佛所悉現其身 — without ever departing from beneath Mañjuśrī's own feet, they manifested their own bodies universally at the place of every buddha throughout the ten directions. Fascicle sixty-one ends on a single body in two places at once: never leaving Mañjuśrī, and yet standing before every buddha everywhere — the ocean of great vows resolving, in the end, into a spiritual power that erases any real distance between the two.

Part 892 Complete — Fascicle 61 Complete

This closes fascicle sixty-one and chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, continues into fascicle sixty-two. Part 893 opens fascicle sixty-two, continuing the account of Sudhana's own pilgrimage as it begins to unfold.
