Good-Wealth's Verse Completes
Good-Wealth's plea shifts into its final and longest image: the Great Vehicle itself built piece by piece out of virtues — vows for wheels, compassion for a hub, patience for a linchpin — a chariot he begs, seventeen times over, to be allowed to ride.
A Chariot Built from Virtue
Every part of an actual chariot finds its counterpart here — wheel, hub, axle, linchpin, carriage-box, canopy, bells, cushion, yoke, harness-strap — each one reassigned to a virtue: vows, compassion, faith, patience, giving, precepts, wisdom, skillful means. The vehicle is the practice itself, built part by part.
善知一切業,深達諸乘行;
You who know well every kind of karma, who have deeply fathomed the practice of every vehicle; you whose wisdom is resolute and sure — show me the Great Vehicle!
The vow is its wheel, great compassion its hub; faith is its axle, firm patience its linchpin; the jewel of merit its adornment — let me ride this vehicle!
Total retention is its vast carriage-box, compassion and pity its adorning canopy, eloquence its ringing bells — let me ride this vehicle!
Pure conduct is its cushioned seat, samādhi its attendant maidens, the dharma-drum sounding its wondrous voice — grant me this vehicle!
The four means of attraction are its inexhaustible treasury, merit its adorning jewels, shame and conscience its harness-straps — grant me this vehicle!
Constantly turning is the wheel of giving, forever anointed with the fragrance of pure precepts, firmly adorned with patience — let me ride this vehicle!
Meditative concentration and samādhi its carriage-box, wisdom and skillful means its yoke, taming all without ever regressing — let me ride this vehicle!
Great vows its pure wheel, total retention its firm strength, accomplished entirely by wisdom — let me ride this vehicle!
Universal practice its surrounding frame, compassion turning it gently, fearless in whatever direction it goes — let me ride this vehicle!
願輪大悲轂 — the vow is its wheel, great compassion its hub. A wheel is useless without a hub to turn on; the image insists that vows alone go nowhere without compassion at their center. The whole chariot is built on this kind of pairing, part matched to virtue, function matched to meaning.
A Final Request, Face to Face
The vehicle metaphor exhausted, Good-Wealth's verse closes by naming Mañjuśrī plainly: one who has already entered the dharma-king's own city, already crowned, already sashed in the wondrous dharma — and asks, simply, to be looked upon with kindness.
四攝圓滿輪,總持清淨光;
如是智慧日,願示我令見!
已入法王城,已著智王冠,
已繫妙法繒,願能慈顧我!」
Firm and unbreakable as vajra, skillful as a magical transformation, without any obstruction whatsoever — let me ride this vehicle!
Vast and utterly pure, universally granting joy to every sentient being, equal to empty space and the dharma-realm itself — let me ride this vehicle!
Purifying the wheel of every karma and affliction, cutting off the suffering of every cycle of transmigration, crushing every māra and every non-Buddhist teacher — let me ride this vehicle!
Wisdom filling the ten directions, adornment pervading the entire dharma-realm, universally satisfying every kind of sentient being — let me ride this vehicle!
Pure as empty space, every craving and view entirely extinguished, benefiting every multitude of beings — let me ride this vehicle!
Traveling swift and fast by the power of vows, abiding secure and at ease through concentration of mind, universally carrying every sentient being — let me ride this vehicle!
Like the earth, never tilting or shaking; like water, universally benefiting all — carrying sentient beings just like this — let me ride this vehicle!
The four means of attraction its own perfect wheel, total retention its pure light — O sun of wisdom just like this, I beg you, show yourself and let me see!
You who have already entered the city of the dharma-king, who have already put on the crown of the wisdom-king, who have already bound on the silk sash of the wondrous dharma — I beg you, look upon me with kindness!"
已入法王城,已著智王冠,已繫妙法繒 — you who have already entered the city of the dharma-king, who have already put on the crown of the wisdom-king, who have already bound on the silk sash of the wondrous dharma. Every other stanza in this verse builds an image out of borrowed parts — chariots, suns, moons. This last one drops the metaphor and simply states what Good-Wealth believes to already be true of Mañjuśrī, in the plainest terms the verse has used.
Part 898 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-two. Part 899 turns to Mañjuśrī's own response, as he looks upon Good-Wealth the way a king of elephants turns to look, and speaks in praise of the boy's own resolve.
