Ten Conditions for Giving Rise to the Mind
Good-Wealth's new question to Ocean-Cloud arrives as ten paired opposites — household of the world against household of the tathāgata, the wheel of birth and death against the bodhisattva's own wheel of vows. Ocean-Cloud, before answering directly, first checks that Good-Wealth has truly given rise to the mind of enlightenment at all, then names ten conditions that make such a thing possible.
Ten Questions, Paired Opposites
Every one of Good-Wealth's ten questions names two things at once — a bondage and its corresponding freedom: the household of the world against the household of the tathāgata, the ocean of birth and death against the ocean of buddha-wisdom, the city of the three realms against the city of all-knowing wisdom.
"Noble one! I have already, before this, given rise to the mind of unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment, and I wish to enter the ocean of unsurpassed wisdom entirely, and yet I do not know: how can a bodhisattva leave behind the household of the world, and be born into the household of the tathāgata? How can he cross over the ocean of birth and death, and enter the ocean of the buddha's own wisdom? How can he depart from the ground of the ordinary person, and enter the tathāgata's own ground? How can he cut off the stream of birth and death, and enter the stream of the bodhisattva's own practice? How can he break the wheel of birth and death, and accomplish the bodhisattva's own wheel of vows? How can he extinguish the domain of māra, and make manifest the buddha's own domain? How can he dry up the ocean of craving and desire, and grow the ocean of great compassion? How can he close the gate of every difficulty and every evil destiny, and open the gate of every heaven's own nirvāṇa? How can he emerge from the city of the three realms, and enter the city of all-knowing wisdom? How can he abandon and give up every plaything and object of delight, and use it all entirely to benefit every sentient being?"
捨世俗家,生如來家 — leave behind the household of the world, and be born into the household of the tathāgata. The very first pairing sets the pattern for all ten: not simply an escape, but an exchange, one household traded for another, one ocean crossed into a different ocean entirely.
Confirming the Mind Before Answering
Before answering a single one of Good-Wealth's ten questions, Ocean-Cloud pauses to confirm something more basic — whether the mind of enlightenment has genuinely been given rise to at all — and then names ten conditions without which, he says, that very mind cannot arise in the first place.
At that time, the monk Ocean-Cloud said to Good-Wealth: "Good son! Have you already given rise to the mind of unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment?" Good-Wealth said: "Yes! I have already, before this, given rise to the mind of unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment." Ocean-Cloud said: "Good son! If sentient beings do not plant roots of goodness, then they cannot give rise to the mind of unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment. One must attain the light of every gate of goodness in every root; be complete in the wisdom-light of the true path's own samādhi; give rise to every kind of vast ocean of blessedness; grow the pure, bright dharma without ever growing lax; serve good spiritual friends without ever growing weary; give no thought to one's own body or life, hoarding nothing away; hold a mind equal as the earth, without any distinction of high or low; possess a nature that is constantly compassionate toward every sentient being; single-mindedly hold every realm of existence in mind without ever abandoning it; and constantly delight in observing the tathāgata's own domain — only in this way can one give rise to the mind of enlightenment.
等心如地無有高下 — hold a mind equal as the earth, without any distinction of high or low. Among the ten conditions, this one names a very physical image for impartiality: the earth supports whatever is placed on it, mountain or valley, without ever favoring one over another.
Part 906 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-two. Part 907 turns to Ocean-Cloud's own definition of what giving rise to the mind of enlightenment actually means, beginning with great compassion and great loving-kindness.
