A Tathāgata Seated Upon the Lotus

Ocean-Cloud's own vision answers his twelve-year question in a way no ocean could: seated cross-legged upon the vast flower, a tathāgata whose body rises all the way to the highest heaven — every one of his qualities named and, in the same breath, called inconceivable.

Nineteen Qualities, Each Inconceivable

Ocean-Cloud names one quality of the buddha after another — his seat, his assembly, his marks, his voice, his fearlessness — and appends the same word to every single one: inconceivable. Naming becomes its own kind of confession that language cannot actually capture what is being named.

Ru-Yi Translation

"At that time I saw, upon that lotus flower, a tathāgata seated cross-legged, his body rising from there all the way up to the Peak of Existence. His jeweled lotus-flower seat was inconceivable; the assembly at his site of awakening was inconceivable; the accomplishment of his every excellent mark was inconceivable; the perfection of his every minor mark was inconceivable; his spiritual power and transformation was inconceivable; the purity of his physical form was inconceivable; the crown-mark on his head that cannot be seen was inconceivable; the mark of his broad and long tongue was inconceivable; his skillful and eloquent speech was inconceivable; his perfect voice was inconceivable; his boundless power was inconceivable; his pure fearlessness was inconceivable; his vast and expansive eloquence was inconceivable. I further reflected: that buddha's every practice cultivated in the past was inconceivable; his self-mastered accomplishment of the path was inconceivable; his wondrous voice proclaiming the dharma was inconceivable; his universal gate manifesting every kind of adornment was inconceivable; the different way he appears to each person to his left and right was inconceivable; and the way he brings every benefit to full completion was inconceivable.

隨其左右見各差別不可思議 — the different way he appears to each person to his left and right was inconceivable. Among the nineteen inconceivable qualities, this one names something almost intimate amid the cosmic scale of the rest: the same buddha appears differently to whoever stands beside him, no two witnesses seeing quite the same thing.

A Hand Upon His Head

After naming what cannot be conceived, the tathāgata does something direct and physical: reaches out his own hand, touches the crown of Ocean-Cloud's head, and speaks a single dharma-gate said to contain within it every dharma-wheel of every buddha at once.

Ru-Yi Translation

At that time, this tathāgata then extended his right hand and touched the crown of my head, and proclaimed for me the dharma-gate of the Universal Eye, revealing the domain of every tathāgata, manifesting every one of the bodhisattva's own practices, illuminating the wondrous dharma of every buddha — every dharma-wheel entering entirely within it, able to purify every buddha's own land, able to crush every non-Buddhist teaching's own false doctrine, able to destroy every army of every māra, able to cause every sentient being to give rise to joy, able to illuminate the mental conduct of every sentient being, able to comprehend every faculty of every sentient being, and, according to each sentient being's own mind, cause every one of them to awaken.

一切法輪悉入其中 — every dharma-wheel entering entirely within it. The Universal Eye dharma-gate is described not as one teaching among many, but as a single gate that every other teaching enters into — the twelve-year contemplation of an ocean's own vastness answered, in the end, by something even the ocean cannot contain.

Part 909 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-two. Part 910 turns to how long Ocean-Cloud held this single dharma-gate, and to his own admission of what still lies beyond it, as he prepares to name Good-Wealth's third teacher.
