A Light of Wisdom Named Ultimate Unobstructed

Well-Abiding answers with something attained not through years of contemplation but simply through coming, going, walking, and standing still with the right reflection — a single light of wisdom that removes every obstruction from twelve distinct kinds of knowing at once.

Attained While Simply Walking

Unlike Ocean-Cloud's twelve years or Virtue-Cloud's deliberate cultivation, Well-Abiding's own attainment arrived through nothing more dramatic than ordinary movement — coming, going, walking, standing — held together by reflection that never lapsed.

At that time, the monk Well-Abiding said to Good-Wealth: "Excellent, excellent! Good son! You have already been able to give rise to the mind of unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment, and now you further give rise to the intention to ask about the buddha's own dharma, the dharma of all-knowing wisdom, and the dharma of the one who is spontaneously so. Good son! I have already accomplished the bodhisattva's own gate of unobstructed liberation; whether coming or going, whether walking or standing still, according with reflection, cultivating and observing, I attained at once a light of wisdom, named: Ultimate Unobstructed.

若來若去,若行若止 — whether coming or going, whether walking or standing still. Every other teacher in this fascicle names a specific, sustained discipline — twelve years of ocean contemplation, twelve hundred years within a single gate. Well-Abiding's own attainment is folded instead into the most ordinary acts a body performs, transformed by nothing but the reflection that accompanies them.

Twelve Kinds of Knowing, Without Obstruction

The light Well-Abiding attained removes obstruction from an entire range of knowledge at once — every sentient being's own mind, their past and future lives, the smallest unit of time up through the flow of the three great ages, and travel itself to every buddha-land in the ten directions.

Ru-Yi Translation

Because I attained this light of wisdom, I know the mental conduct of every sentient being without any obstruction; I know the passing away and rebirth of every sentient being without any obstruction; I know the past lives of every sentient being without any obstruction; I know the events of every sentient being's own future eons without any obstruction; I know the events of every sentient being's own present world without any obstruction; I know every kind of difference in the language and voice of every sentient being without any obstruction; I resolve every doubt and question that every sentient being holds without any obstruction; I know every faculty of every sentient being without any obstruction; according to whenever every sentient being ought to receive teaching, I am able to go there entirely without any obstruction; I know every kṣaṇa, every lava, every muhūrta, every division of day and night without any obstruction; I know the sequence of the flow of the ocean of the three times without any obstruction; and I am able, with this very body, to go universally to every buddha-land throughout the ten directions without any obstruction. Why is this? Because I have attained the spiritual power that neither abides nor acts.

得無住無作神通力故 — because I have attained the spiritual power that neither abides nor acts. Twelve kinds of unobstructed knowing are all traced back to one single cause: a spiritual power defined by what it does not do — it neither abides anywhere nor exerts any effort — as though the obstruction itself came from abiding and acting in the first place.

Part 914 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-two. Part 915 turns to what this spiritual power actually lets Well-Abiding do — walking through walls, sitting cross-legged in mid-air, and manifesting a body that reaches the palace of Brahmā himself.
