Light from Megha's Own Face

Having finished his praise of Good-Wealth, Megha lets light pour from his own face across an entire trichiliocosm — and every being it touches, from nāga spirits to the Brahmā-heavens, comes to him at once and leaves with non-regression in enlightenment already secured.

Every Being an Entire Universe Contains

The light Megha emits does not simply illuminate — it summons. Nāga spirits, Brahmā-heavens, and everything between them are drawn to him at once, and the teaching he gives in that single gathering leaves every one of them established in non-regression before he even returns to his seat.

Ru-Yi Translation

Once Megha had praised Good-Wealth in this way, causing every bodhisattva present to rejoice, he emitted every kind of light from the gate of his own face, universally illuminating the trichiliocosm. The sentient beings within it, having encountered this light, every one of them — nāga spirits and all the rest, up to the Brahmā-heavens — came entirely to the place of Megha. The great being Megha then, with skillful means, revealed, proclaimed, distinguished, and explained for them the Wheel-Syllable Chapter Adornment dharma-gate. Every one of those sentient beings, having heard this dharma, attained non-regression in unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment. Megha then returned and ascended his own original seat, and said to Good-Wealth: "Good son! I have already attained the dhāraṇī of wondrous sound, and am able to distinguish and know every language of every deva throughout the trichiliocosm, and the language of every nāga, yakṣa, gandharva, asura, garuḍa, kiṃnara, mahoraga, human and non-human, and every Brahmā-heaven. And just as with this trichiliocosm, so too it is entirely the same throughout countless worlds in the ten directions, and on up to unspeakably unspeakable worlds.

彌伽於是還昇本座 — Megha then returned and ascended his own original seat. Between prostrating on the ground before Good-Wealth and now returning to his lion-throne, Megha has illuminated a trichiliocosm and secured the enlightenment of everyone in it — an entire teaching episode compressed between two positions of the same body.

A Single Gate, Set Against Oceans of Speech

Megha's own confession of limitation this time is framed entirely in terms of language and speech — oceans of concepts, oceans of names, oceans of dharma-phrases at every level of depth — that the great bodhisattvas alone can enter completely.

「善男子!我唯知此菩薩妙音陀羅尼光明法門。如諸菩薩摩訶薩,能普入一切眾生種種想海、種種施設海、種種名號海、種種語言海,能普入說一切深密法句海、說一切究竟法句海、說一所緣中有一切三世所緣法句海、說上法句海、說上上法句海、說差別法句海、說一切差別法句海,能普入一切世間呪術海、一切音聲莊嚴輪、一切差別字輪際;如是功德,我今云何能知能說?

Ru-Yi Translation

Good son! I know only this bodhisattva's own dhāraṇī of wondrous sound and light dharma-gate. As for how the great bodhisattvas are able to universally enter the ocean of every kind of concept, the ocean of every kind of designation, the ocean of every kind of name, and the ocean of every kind of language of every sentient being; how they are able to universally enter the ocean of speaking every profound and secret dharma-phrase, the ocean of speaking every ultimate dharma-phrase, the ocean of speaking the dharma-phrase in which a single object of contemplation holds every object of contemplation across the three times, the ocean of speaking superior dharma-phrases, the ocean of speaking supremely superior dharma-phrases, the ocean of speaking distinct dharma-phrases, and the ocean of speaking every kind of distinct dharma-phrase; how they are able to universally enter the ocean of every worldly incantation, every wheel adorned with every kind of sound, and the very boundary of every wheel of distinct syllables — such merit as this, how could I now possibly know and speak of it?

說一所緣中有一切三世所緣法句海 — the ocean of speaking the dharma-phrase in which a single object of contemplation holds every object of contemplation across the three times. Buried in the middle of this list of oceans is a claim about scale itself: a single point of focus, properly understood, already contains every object across past, present, and future — the same one-in-many pattern this sūtra returns to again and again.

Part 920 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-three. Part 921 turns to the naming of Good-Wealth's fifth teacher — the elder Liberation, in the village of Grove-Dwelling — and Good-Wealth's tearful departure from Megha.
