Liberation Enters the Boundless Revolving Dhāraṇī

Good-Wealth's own request names, one after another, the exact obstructions he hopes to be freed from — confusion, hesitation, doubt, defiled craving — before Liberation answers not with words but by entering a named samādhi, drawing on his own past merit, the buddha's power, and Mañjuśrī's own continuing mindfulness of him.

Every Obstruction Named in Turn

Good-Wealth's own request is unusually specific: not a general plea for teaching, but a list of exact afflictions — the arrow of hesitation, the net of doubt, the mind's own flattery and crookedness — each one named as something he hopes this meeting will remove.

Ru-Yi Translation

"Noble one! With such a mind, such an intention, such delight, such desire, such longing, such reflection, such reverence, such skillful means, such ultimate resolve, and such humility as this, I have come to your own place. I have heard that you, noble one, are skilled in guiding and instructing every bodhisattva assembly, able through skillful means to illuminate what has been attained, to show the road, to give the crossing-place, and to bestow the dharma-gate; causing the removal of the obstruction of confusion and inversion, pulling out the arrow of hesitation, cutting through the net of doubt and confusion, illuminating the dense forest of the mind, washing away the mind's own defilement and turbidity, causing the mind to become pure and white, making the mind cool and at ease, straightening the mind's own flattery and crookedness, severing the mind's own birth and death, stopping the mind's own unwholesomeness, and releasing the mind's own attachment; in places of attachment, causing the mind to be liberated; in places of defiled craving, causing the mind to shift and turn away; causing it to swiftly enter the domain of all-knowing wisdom; causing it to quickly arrive at the city of the unsurpassed dharma; causing it to abide in great compassion, causing it to abide in great loving-kindness, causing it to enter the bodhisattva's own practice, causing it to cultivate the gate of samādhi, causing it to enter the stage of realization, causing it to observe the nature of dharma, causing it to increase its own power, and causing it to cultivate and practice — universally, toward all of this, its own mind equal and impartial. I only wish that you, noble one, would proclaim for me: how does a bodhisattva study the bodhisattva's own practice and cultivate the bodhisattva's own path? So that, in whatever I cultivate and practice, I may swiftly attain purity, and swiftly attain clear understanding!"

拔猶豫箭,截疑惑網 — pulling out the arrow of hesitation, cutting through the net of doubt and confusion. Good-Wealth's own request treats his mental obstructions as concrete objects with a specific remedy each — an arrow to be pulled, a net to be cut, a forest to be illuminated — rather than a single vague affliction to be dispelled all at once.

An Answer Given by Entering Samādhi

Liberation's own response is not spoken but entered into: drawing on three distinct sources of power at once — his own past merit, the buddha's own majestic power, and Mañjuśrī's continuing mindfulness of him — he passes into a samādhi with a single, precise name.

時,解脫長者以過去善根力、佛威神力、文殊師利童子憶念力故,即入菩薩三昧門,名:普攝一切佛剎無邊旋陀羅尼。

Ru-Yi Translation

At that time, the elder Liberation, by the power of his own past roots of goodness, the majestic spiritual power of the buddha, and the power of the youth Mañjuśrī's own mindfulness, at once entered the bodhisattva's own samādhi-gate, named: the Boundless Revolving Dhāraṇī that Universally Gathers In Every Buddha-Land.

文殊師利童子憶念力故 — the power of the youth Mañjuśrī's own mindfulness. Mañjuśrī has not appeared in the narrative since Fascicle Sixty-One, and yet his own continuing mindfulness of Good-Wealth is named here as one of three forces enabling Liberation's own samādhi — a quiet reminder that the teacher who first sent Good-Wealth on this pilgrimage has never actually left it.

Part 923 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-three. Part 924 turns to what this samādhi actually reveals: buddha-lands beyond counting, appearing directly within Liberation's own body.
