Beings Emerge from Sea-Banner's Own Feet

Good-Wealth's journey, held together by an unbroken chain of contemplation, ends beside a walking path at the edge of the known world — where Sea-Banner sits so deep in samādhi that his own breath has stopped, and yet from beneath his feet, countless beings pour out to feed and clothe the poor.

A Body So Still the Breath Has Stopped

Good-Wealth's own arrival is preceded by eleven distinct contemplations held in unbroken sequence, and what he finds at the end of them exceeds even Well-Abiding's stillness from earlier in this pilgrimage: a body in samādhi so complete that breathing itself has ceased.

At that time, the boy Good-Wealth single-mindedly and rightly held in mind that elder's own teaching, observed that elder's own teaching, called to mind that inconceivable bodhisattva gate of liberation, reflected on that inconceivable bodhisattva light of wisdom, deeply entered that inconceivable gate of the dharma-realm, proceeded toward that inconceivable bodhisattva gate of universal entry, clearly beheld that inconceivable tathāgata's own spiritual transformation, understood that inconceivable universal entry into every buddha-land, distinguished that inconceivable adornment of the buddha's own power, reflected on that inconceivable bodhisattva's own stages within the domain of samādhi and liberation, comprehended that inconceivable, distinct world's own ultimate freedom from obstruction, cultivated that inconceivable bodhisattva's own firm, deep mind, and gave rise to that inconceivable bodhisattva's own great vow and pure karma. He traveled south by stages, until he arrived at the village of Mālā at the edge of Jambudvīpa, and searched everywhere for the monk Sea-Banner. He then saw him seated cross-legged beside a walking path, having entered samādhi, free from the in-breath and out-breath, without any distinct thought or sensation, his body settled and unmoving.

離出入息,無別思覺,身安不動 — free from the in-breath and out-breath, without any distinct thought or sensation, his body settled and unmoving. Sea-Banner's own stillness is described in terms more absolute than any prior teacher's — not merely motionless, but without even the most basic involuntary function a living body performs.

Relief Pouring from Beneath His Feet

From beneath the very feet of a body that has stopped breathing, an entire economy of relief pours forth — jeweled elders and householders raining down food, clothing, and treasure across the ten directions, rescuing the poor and comforting the suffering, all while the body itself never moves.

Ru-Yi Translation

From beneath his own feet, there emerged countless hundreds of thousands of millions of elders, householders, and brāhmaṇas, every one of them adorning their own bodies with every kind of adornment, all wearing jeweled crowns, with bright jewels bound at the crown of their own heads, universally going to every world throughout the ten directions, raining down every kind of treasure, every kind of necklace, every kind of garment, every kind of food and drink of the finest flavor prepared according to the dharma, every kind of flower, every kind of garland, every kind of incense, every kind of anointing incense, and every kind of implement for desire's own delight and the necessities of life, rescuing and gathering in every impoverished sentient being in every place, comforting every sentient being afflicted with suffering, causing every one of them to rejoice, their minds and intentions purified, and bringing them to accomplish the path of unsurpassed enlightenment.

從其足下,出無數百千億長者、居士、婆羅門眾 — from beneath his own feet, there emerged countless hundreds of thousands of millions of elders, householders, and brāhmaṇas. The choice of the feet as the point of origin is not incidental: what emerges from the lowest part of his body goes out to relieve the lowest condition among sentient beings — poverty and material want — before the passage moves upward to other parts of him.

Part 929 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-three. Part 930 turns to what emerges next from Sea-Banner's own knees and waist — kṣatriyas and brāhmaṇas teaching through kindness, and sages proclaiming the dharma through the empty air.
