From Back and Shoulders, Teaching and Guarding

Sea-Banner's own back gives rise to teachers who diagnose before they speak — a different remedy for each of nine distinct afflictions — while his shoulders give rise to fearsome guardians whose only task is protection: of the good, of the suffering, and of every buddha's own dwelling place.

Nine Afflictions, Nine Remedies

The śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas emerging from Sea-Banner's own back never teach a single fixed doctrine; they diagnose first — attachment to a self, grasping at permanence, greed, hatred, delusion — and speak only the specific remedy each condition calls for.

From his own back, for the sake of those who ought to be liberated through the two vehicles, there emerged countless hundreds of thousands of millions of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas; for those attached to a self, they spoke of there being no self; for those who grasp at permanence, they spoke of how every conditioned thing is entirely impermanent; for those whose conduct is greedy, they spoke of the contemplation of impurity; for those whose conduct is hateful, they spoke of the contemplation of loving-kindness; for those whose conduct is deluded, they spoke of the contemplation of dependent origination; for those whose conduct is evenly mixed, they spoke of the dharma of the domain that accords with wisdom; for those who delight in and are attached to sense-objects, they spoke of the dharma of having nothing at all; and for those who delight in and are attached to quiescent places, they spoke of the dharma of giving rise to great vows that universally benefit every sentient being. All such deeds as these pervade the entire dharma-realm.

為樂著寂靜處者,說發大誓願普饒益一切眾生法 — for those who delight in and are attached to quiescent places, they spoke of the dharma of giving rise to great vows that universally benefit every sentient being. The final remedy is the most pointed: those who cling to stillness itself are given, not more stillness, but a vow that pulls them back out into the work of benefiting others.

Fearsome Guardians, Gentle Purpose

The yakṣas and rākṣasas from Sea-Banner's own shoulders look exactly as their kind traditionally does — tall or short, every one of them fearsome — and yet every task named for them is protective and healing rather than threatening.

Ru-Yi Translation

From his two shoulders, there emerged countless hundreds of thousands of millions of yakṣa and rākṣasa kings, of every kind of appearance and every kind of form, some tall and some short, all of them fearsome to behold, surrounded by their own measureless retinues, guarding every sentient being who practices goodness, together with every sage and worthy and every bodhisattva assembly, whether proceeding toward right abiding or already rightly abiding; sometimes manifesting as vajra-bearing spirits, guarding every buddha and every place a buddha dwells, and sometimes guarding the entire world universally. Whoever is fearful, they cause to attain peace and security; whoever is sick, they cause to be cured; whoever suffers affliction, they cause to be freed from it; whoever has committed fault or evil, they cause to feel remorse; and whoever meets with disaster or misfortune, they cause it to be extinguished. Benefiting every sentient being in this way, they cause every one of them to abandon the wheel of birth and death and turn the wheel of the true dharma.

皆可怖畏……有怖畏者,令得安隱 — all of them fearsome to behold … whoever is fearful, they cause to attain peace and security. The same passage names these guardians as fearsome in appearance and then immediately credits them with removing fear from others — their own terrifying form apparently no obstacle at all to the comfort they actually provide.

Part 932 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-three. Part 933 turns to what emerges next from Sea-Banner's own belly — kiṃnaras and gandharvas singing the dharma in celestial music — before the account turns to his face and eyes.
