Good-Wealth Praises the Samādhi, Ten Times Over
Six months of watching finally finds words: Good-Wealth names the same samādhi superlative in ten different ways — most profound, most vast, without equal, without number — and then, still not finished, names twenty specific benefits it grants before finally asking Sea-Banner the simplest question of all: what is it called?
The Same Samādhi, Praised Ten Ways
Every clause repeats the same three words — this samādhi — and attaches a different superlative each time: most profound, most vast, measureless, inconceivable, unequaled, without number, unrestrainable, equal throughout, universally illuminating, and without limit.
善財童子讚言：「聖者！希有奇特！如此三昧最為甚深，如此三昧最為廣大，如此三昧境界無量，如此三昧神力難思，如此三昧光明無等，如此三昧莊嚴無數，如此三昧威力難制，如此三昧境界平等，如此三昧普照十方，如此三昧利益無限，以能除滅一切眾生無量苦故。
The boy Good-Wealth spoke in praise: "Noble one! How rare, how extraordinary! This samādhi is the most profound of all; this samādhi is the most vast and expansive of all; this samādhi's own domain is measureless; this samādhi's own spiritual power is difficult to conceive; this samādhi's own light is without equal; this samādhi's own adornment is without number; this samādhi's own majestic power is difficult to restrain; this samādhi's own domain is equal throughout; this samādhi universally illuminates the ten directions; and this samādhi's own benefit is without limit, because it is able to extinguish the measureless suffering of every sentient being.
如此三昧最為甚深，如此三昧最為廣大 — this samādhi is the most profound of all; this samādhi is the most vast and expansive of all. After six months of silent watching, Good-Wealth's first words repeat the same subject ten times over — as though no single superlative alone could carry what he witnessed, and only the accumulation of all ten together comes close.
Twenty Benefits, and a Simple Question
The praise unfolds into twenty specific benefits — freedom from poverty and the hells first, then joy, then the mind of enlightenment, then every stage of the bodhisattva path in turn — before Good-Wealth closes with the one question none of this praise has actually answered: what is this samādhi called?
所謂：能令一切眾生離貧苦故，出地獄故，免畜生故，閉諸難門故，開人、天道故，令人、天眾生喜樂故，令其愛樂禪境界故，能令增長有為樂故，能為顯示出有樂故，能為引發菩提心故，能使增長福智行故，能令增長大悲心故，能令生起大願力故，能令明了菩薩道故，能使莊嚴究竟智故，能令趣入大乘境故，能令照了普賢行故，能令證得諸菩薩地智光明故，能令成就一切菩薩諸願行故，能令安住一切智智境界中故。聖者！此三昧者，名為何等？」
Namely: it is able to cause every sentient being to depart from the suffering of poverty; to emerge from the hells; to be spared from the animal realm; to close the gate of every difficulty; to open the path of humans and devas; to cause human and heavenly beings to be joyful; to cause them to delight in the domain of meditative concentration; to cause the joy of the conditioned to grow; to reveal and manifest the joy of departing from existence; to draw out and give rise to the mind of enlightenment; to cause the practice of merit and wisdom to grow; to cause the mind of great compassion to grow; to cause the power of great vows to arise; to cause the bodhisattva's own path to be clearly understood; to cause ultimate wisdom to be adorned; to cause entry into the domain of the Great Vehicle; to cause Samantabhadra's own practice to be illuminated and understood; to cause the realization of the light of wisdom at every bodhisattva ground; to cause the accomplishment of every bodhisattva's own vows and practices; and to cause one to abide securely within the domain of the wisdom of all-knowing wisdom. Noble one! What is this samādhi named?"
能令一切眾生離貧苦故，出地獄故，免畜生故 — it is able to cause every sentient being to depart from the suffering of poverty; to emerge from the hells; to be spared from the animal realm. Good-Wealth's list of twenty benefits begins with the most immediate, worldly relief — poverty, hell, the animal realm — before climbing, item by item, all the way up to abiding within the domain of all-knowing wisdom itself, tracing the entire path in a single breath.
