Sea-Banner Names the Samādhi
Sea-Banner answers Good-Wealth's simplest question with three names at once — and then, asked whether this is really all there is to it, answers with twenty-two distinct things he does entirely without obstruction, from adorning every world to knowing the faculties of every sentient being.
Three Names for One Samādhi
A samādhi held for six months turns out to have not one name but three, each emphasizing something different — giving and receiving, the pure light of wisdom's own domain, and the pure gate of universal adornment — and all of it traced back to a single practice: the pāramitā of wisdom itself.
The monk Sea-Banner said: "Good son! This samādhi is named: Universal Eye Giving and Attaining; it is also named: the Pure Light of the Domain of the Pāramitā of Wisdom; and it is also named: the Pure Gate of Universal Adornment. Good son! Because I have cultivated and practiced the pāramitā of wisdom, I have attained this pure samādhi of universal adornment, together with a million asaṃkhyeyas of further samādhis equal to it."
此三昧名:普眼捨得 — this samādhi is named: Universal Eye Giving and Attaining. The first of its three names pairs two opposite acts in a single title — giving away and attaining — a fitting name for a samādhi whose every emanation, from feet to crown, has done nothing but give without ever depleting the one giving.
Twenty-Two Things, All Without Obstruction
Good-Wealth's own follow-up question — is this really all there is? — draws out a list that reaches from every world to every buddha to every sentient being, each item ending in the same four words: without any obstruction.
The boy Good-Wealth said: "Noble one! Is the domain of this samādhi entirely and ultimately just as you have described?" Sea-Banner said: "Good son! When I enter this samādhi, I comprehend every world, without any obstruction; I go to every world, without any obstruction; I transcend every world, without any obstruction; I adorn every world, without any obstruction; I cultivate and refine every world, without any obstruction; I adorn and purify every world, without any obstruction; I see every buddha, without any obstruction; I behold every buddha's own vast, majestic virtue, without any obstruction; I know every buddha's own self-mastered spiritual power, without any obstruction; I realize every one of every buddha's own vast powers, without any obstruction; I enter the ocean of every buddha's own merit, without any obstruction; I receive every buddha's own measureless, wondrous dharma, without any obstruction; I enter into every buddha's own dharma and cultivate wondrous practice, without any obstruction; I realize the equal wisdom of every buddha's own turning of the dharma-wheel, without any obstruction; I enter the ocean of the assembly at the site of awakening of every buddha, without any obstruction; I observe the dharma of every buddha throughout the ten directions, without any obstruction; with great compassion, I gather in and accept sentient beings throughout the ten directions, without any obstruction; I constantly give rise to great loving-kindness, filling the ten directions entirely, without any obstruction; I see every buddha throughout the ten directions with a mind that never tires or is ever satisfied, without any obstruction; I enter the ocean of every sentient being, without any obstruction; I know the ocean of every sentient being's own faculties, without any obstruction; and I know the wisdom that distinguishes every faculty of every sentient being, without any obstruction.
見十方佛心無厭足 — I see every buddha throughout the ten directions with a mind that never tires or is ever satisfied. Amid twenty-two items that otherwise describe unlimited access, this one names something closer to an appetite: not merely the ability to see every buddha, but a mind for which that seeing never once reaches its own fill.
