The Bodhisattva's Measureless Qualities
Without waiting for a further question, Rest-and-Release names eleven things about a bodhisattva that cannot be measured — resolve, compassion, vows, loving-kindness, practice, samādhi, dhāraṇī, wisdom-light, spiritual power, eloquence, and the pure body itself — each one paired with the exact reason no measure can ever contain it.
Eleven Things Beyond Measure
Each item in this list follows the same shape — a quality declared measureless, followed at once by the reason why: because it fills the dharma-realm, because it enters every world, because it never regresses, because a single sound is understood by everyone at once.
「善男子！菩薩初發心無有量，充滿一切法界故；菩薩大悲門無有量，普入一切世間故；菩薩大願門無有量，究竟十方法界故；菩薩大慈門無有量，普覆一切眾生故；菩薩所修行無有量，於一切剎一切劫中修習故；菩薩三昧力無有量，令菩薩道不退故；菩薩總持力無有量，能持一切世間故；菩薩智光力無有量，普能證入三世故；菩薩神通力無有量，普現一切剎網故；菩薩辯才力無有量，一音一切悉解故；菩薩清淨身無有量，悉遍一切佛剎故。」
"Good son, a bodhisattva's initial resolve is measureless, because it fills the entire dharma-realm; a bodhisattva's gate of great compassion is measureless, because it universally enters every world; a bodhisattva's gate of great vows is measureless, because it reaches to the very limit of the dharma-realm in the ten directions; a bodhisattva's gate of great loving-kindness is measureless, because it universally covers every being; a bodhisattva's own practice is measureless, because it is cultivated throughout every land and every kalpa; a bodhisattva's power of samādhi is measureless, because it causes the bodhisattva path never to regress; a bodhisattva's power of total retention is measureless, because it is able to uphold every world; a bodhisattva's power of the light of wisdom is measureless, because it is universally able to realize and enter the three times; a bodhisattva's power of spiritual penetration is measureless, because it universally manifests throughout the net of every land; a bodhisattva's power of eloquence is measureless, because a single sound is entirely understood by everyone; and a bodhisattva's pure body is measureless, because it entirely pervades every buddha-land."
一音一切悉解故 — because a single sound is entirely understood by everyone. Among eleven measureless qualities, most are measureless because they reach outward without limit — every world, every kalpa, every land. This one alone locates the immeasurability on the listener's side: it is not the sound that multiplies, but every hearer's own understanding of the very same sound.
