Not for Teaching, Offering, or Adorning
Asked how soon she will reach buddhahood, Rest-and-Release answers with a list built entirely out of denials — bodhicitta was never raised merely to teach one being, or a hundred, or beings numbering a Turning of the Unspeakably Unspeakable, and the same scale repeats for making offerings to buddhas and for adorning worlds.
Not Even for a Turning of the Unspeakably Unspeakable
Three separate objects — beings to be taught, tathāgatas to be honored, worlds to be adorned — each get the same escalating denial, climbing from a single instance through worlds as numerous as the dust of Jambudvīpa and of a great trichiliocosm, up to the largest number this sūtra names at all.
善財童子言:「聖者久如當得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提?」答言:「善男子!菩薩不為教化調伏一眾生故發菩提心,不為教化調伏百眾生故發菩提心,乃至不為教化調伏不可說不可說轉眾生故發菩提心;不為教化一世界眾生故發菩提心,乃至不為教化不可說不可說轉世界眾生故發菩提心;不為教化閻浮提微塵數世界眾生故發菩提心,不為教化三千大千世界微塵數世界眾生故發菩提心,乃至不為教化不可說不可說轉三千大千世界微塵數世界眾生故發菩提心;不為供養一如來故發菩提心,乃至不為供養不可說不可說轉如來故發菩提心;不為供養一世界中次第興世諸如來故發菩提心,乃至不為供養不可說不可說轉世界中次第興世諸如來故發菩提心;不為供養一三千大千世界微塵數世界中次第興世諸如來故發菩提心,乃至不為供養不可說不可說轉佛剎微塵數世界中次第興世諸如來故發菩提心;不為嚴淨一世界故發菩提心,乃至不為嚴淨不可說不可說轉世界故發菩提心;不為嚴淨一三千大千世界微塵數世界故發菩提心,乃至不為嚴淨不可說不可說轉三千大千世界微塵數世界故發菩提心;
Good-Wealth said: "Noble one, how soon will you attain anuttara-samyak-sambodhi?" She replied: "Good son, a bodhisattva does not give rise to the mind of bodhi for the sake of teaching and taming a single being, does not give rise to it for the sake of teaching and taming a hundred beings, and does not give rise to it even for the sake of teaching and taming beings numbering a Turning of the Unspeakably Unspeakable; does not give rise to it for the sake of teaching the beings of a single world, and does not give rise to it even for the sake of teaching the beings of worlds numbering a Turning of the Unspeakably Unspeakable; does not give rise to it for the sake of teaching the beings of worlds as numerous as the fine motes of dust in Jambudvīpa, does not give rise to it for the sake of teaching the beings of worlds as numerous as the fine motes of dust in a great trichiliocosm, and does not give rise to it even for the sake of teaching the beings of worlds as numerous as the fine motes of dust in a Turning of the Unspeakably Unspeakable great trichiliocosms; does not give rise to it for the sake of making offerings to a single tathāgata, and does not give rise to it even for the sake of making offerings to tathāgatas numbering a Turning of the Unspeakably Unspeakable; does not give rise to it for the sake of making offerings to the tathāgatas who arise in sequence within a single world, and does not give rise to it even for the sake of making offerings to the tathāgatas who arise in sequence within worlds numbering a Turning of the Unspeakably Unspeakable; does not give rise to it for the sake of making offerings to the tathāgatas who arise in sequence within worlds as numerous as the fine motes of dust in a great trichiliocosm, and does not give rise to it even for the sake of making offerings to the tathāgatas who arise in sequence within worlds as numerous as the fine motes of dust in a Turning of the Unspeakably Unspeakable buddha-lands; does not give rise to it for the sake of adorning and purifying a single world, and does not give rise to it even for the sake of adorning and purifying worlds numbering a Turning of the Unspeakably Unspeakable; does not give rise to it for the sake of adorning and purifying worlds as numerous as the fine motes of dust in a great trichiliocosm, and does not give rise to it even for the sake of adorning and purifying worlds as numerous as the fine motes of dust in a Turning of the Unspeakably Unspeakable great trichiliocosms;
不可說不可說轉 — a Turning of the Unspeakably Unspeakable. This same term names the very last rung of the great number-ladder given in this sūtra's own chapter on numbers, back in fascicle forty-five — the largest quantity this text ever puts a name to, reached here three separate times, once for beings, once for buddhas, once for worlds, only to have bodhicitta declared bigger than all three.
Part 951 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-four. Part 952 completes this list with a fourth object — upholding a tathāgata's bequeathed teaching — before Rest-and-Release turns the entire list around into what bodhicitta truly was raised for.
