What Bodhicitta Was Truly Raised For

Rest-and-Release closes her denial list with a fourth object — upholding a tathāgata's own bequeathed teaching — and a briefer list of further things bodhicitta was never raised for, then turns the entire structure around: every single denial becomes its own positive counterpart, each one now something bodhicitta truly exists to accomplish, entirely without remainder.

A Fourth Denial, Then a Briefer Summary

Upholding a tathāgata's own bequeathed teaching receives the same three-tiered scaling as the objects before it, and then the list itself changes shape — shorter clauses now, each naming a different single thing, from a buddha's own vow to a single being's own ocean of habitual affliction.

Ru-Yi Translation

A bodhisattva does not give rise to the mind of bodhi for the sake of upholding a single tathāgata's own bequeathed teaching, and does not give rise to it even for the sake of upholding the bequeathed teachings of tathāgatas numbering a Turning of the Unspeakably Unspeakable; does not give rise to it for the sake of upholding the bequeathed teaching of the tathāgatas of a single world, and does not give rise to it even for the sake of upholding the bequeathed teaching of the tathāgatas of worlds numbering a Turning of the Unspeakably Unspeakable; does not give rise to it for the sake of upholding the bequeathed teaching of the tathāgatas of worlds as numerous as the fine motes of dust in Jambudvīpa, and does not give rise to it even for the sake of upholding the bequeathed teaching of the tathāgatas of worlds as numerous as the fine motes of dust in a Turning of the Unspeakably Unspeakable buddha-lands. To state this briefly, one does not give rise to the mind of bodhi for the sake of fulfilling a single buddha's own vow, for the sake of going to a single buddha's own land, for the sake of entering a single buddha's own assembly, for the sake of upholding a single buddha's own dharma-eye, for the sake of turning a single buddha's own dharma-wheel, for the sake of knowing the sequence of every kalpa within a single world, for the sake of knowing a single being's own ocean of mind, for the sake of knowing a single being's own ocean of faculties, for the sake of knowing a single being's own ocean of karma, for the sake of knowing a single being's own ocean of conduct, for the sake of knowing a single being's own ocean of affliction, for the sake of knowing a single being's own ocean of habitual afflictive tendencies, and does not give rise to it even for the sake of knowing the ocean of habitual afflictive tendencies of beings as numerous as the fine motes of dust in a Turning of the Unspeakably Unspeakable buddha-lands.

不為知一眾生煩惱習海故 — not for the sake of knowing a single being's own ocean of habitual afflictive tendencies. After several clauses naming external things — vows, lands, assemblies, dharma-wheels — the list turns inward toward a single being's own mind, faculties, karma, conduct, and affliction, each one already called an "ocean" even before any number of beings has been multiplied at all.

Every Denial, Mirrored Into Its Own Purpose

Without pausing, the passage reverses direction entirely: every object just denied — beings, buddhas, lands, teachings, vows, oceans of mind and karma and affliction — returns one by one as something bodhicitta truly exists to accomplish, each with the same closing phrase, "entirely without remainder."

Ru-Yi Translation

"It is in order to teach and tame every being entirely without remainder that one gives rise to the mind of bodhi; in order to attend upon and make offerings to every buddha entirely without remainder; in order to adorn and purify every buddha's own land entirely without remainder; in order to guard and uphold every buddha's own true teaching entirely without remainder; in order to fulfill every tathāgata's own vow entirely without remainder; in order to go to every buddha's own land entirely without remainder; in order to enter every buddha's own assembly entirely without remainder; in order to know the sequence of every kalpa within every world entirely without remainder; in order to know every being's own ocean of mind entirely without remainder; in order to know every being's own ocean of faculties entirely without remainder; in order to know every being's own ocean of karma entirely without remainder; in order to know every being's own ocean of conduct entirely without remainder; in order to extinguish every being's own ocean of affliction entirely without remainder; and in order to pull out every being's own ocean of habitual afflictive tendencies entirely without remainder that one gives rise to the mind of bodhi. Good son, to state the essential point, a bodhisattva gives rise to the mind of bodhi through skillful means such as these, numbering a hundred million asaṃkhyeyas."

悉無餘故 — entirely without remainder. Every clause in the denial list said bodhicitta was never raised for a finite, countable goal, no matter how vast; every clause in this mirrored list says it exists for a goal that admits no remainder at all — the same objects, but measured now by completeness rather than by size.

Part 952 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-four. Part 953 turns to Rest-and-Release's own vow — that it will never be finished until every world is purified and every being's affliction pulled out — and Good-Wealth's question asking the name of her liberation.
