The Sage-Assembly Scatters Flowers on Good-Wealth
Hearing their teacher's words, the whole assembly of forest sages showers Good-Wealth with wondrous flowers, throws themselves down before him, and circles him with reverence, declaring fourteen things this boy will certainly do — from rescuing every being to making the world discern what is perilous and what is easy.
Fourteen Things He Will Certainly Do
Every clause in this prophecy begins the same way — "will certainly" — moving from rescuing beings and closing hell's own gates, through drying up the ocean of craving, to surrounding the world itself with a mountain of merit and revealing it through a Sumeru of wisdom.
時，諸仙眾聞是語已，各以種種上妙香華散善財上，投身作禮，圍遶恭敬，作如是言：「今此童子，必當救護一切眾生，必當除滅諸地獄苦，必當永斷諸畜生道，必當轉去閻羅王界，必當關閉諸難處門，必當乾竭諸愛欲海，必令眾生永滅苦蘊，必當永破無明黑闇，必當永斷貪愛繫縛，必以福德大輪圍山圍遶世間，必以智慧大寶須彌顯示世間，必當出現清淨智日，必當開示善根法藏，必使世間明識險易。」
At that time, having heard these words, the assembly of sages each scattered every kind of supreme, wondrous, fragrant flower over Good-Wealth, threw themselves down in prostration, circled around him with reverence, and spoke these words: "This boy here will certainly rescue and protect every being; will certainly remove and extinguish the suffering of every hell; will certainly forever cut off the path of every animal realm; will certainly turn beings away from the realm of King Yama; will certainly close the gates of every place of difficulty; will certainly dry up the ocean of every craving and desire; will certainly cause every being's own aggregates of suffering to be forever extinguished; will certainly forever break through the black darkness of ignorance; will certainly forever cut the bonds of greed and craving; will certainly surround the world with the great encircling mountain of merit; will certainly reveal the world through the great jeweled Sumeru of wisdom; will certainly cause the pure sun of wisdom to appear; will certainly open up and reveal the dharma-treasury of every root of goodness; and will certainly cause the world to clearly discern what is perilous and what is easy."
必以福德大輪圍山圍遶世間 — will certainly surround the world with the great encircling mountain of merit. This same great encircling mountain first appeared far earlier in this translation, ringing the Flower-Treasury World-Ocean itself in fascicle eight — here it reappears not as cosmology, but as a metaphor for what one boy's own merit will one day do.
