The Liberation Named Unsurpassed Banner
Bhīṣmottaranirghoṣa turns from praising Good-Wealth to declaring his own attainment, and when Good-Wealth asks what this liberation actually is, the sage answers not with an explanation but with a touch — extending his right hand to stroke the boy's head and take hold of his hand.
An Answer Given by Touch, Not by Word
Bhīṣmottaranirghoṣa names his liberation Unsurpassed Banner, and when Good-Wealth asks what its state actually is, the sage does not describe it at all — he simply reaches out and touches him, letting whatever happens next stand as the only answer needed.
時，毘目瞿沙告群仙言：「善男子！若有能發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心，必當成就一切智道。此善男子已發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心，當淨一切佛功德地。」時，毘目瞿沙告善財童子言：「善男子！我得菩薩無勝幢解脫。」善財白言：「聖者！無勝幢解脫境界云何？」時，毘目仙人即申右手，摩善財頂，執善財手。
At that time, Bhīṣmottaranirghoṣa said to his group of sages: "Good sons, if there is anyone able to give rise to the mind of anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, they will certainly accomplish the path of omniscience. This good son has already given rise to the mind of anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, and will purify the ground of every buddha's own merit." At that time, Bhīṣmottaranirghoṣa said to the boy Good-Wealth: "Good son, I have attained the bodhisattva liberation Unsurpassed Banner." Good-Wealth said: "Noble one, what is the state of the liberation Unsurpassed Banner?" At that time, the sage Bhīṣmottaranirghoṣa at once extended his right hand, stroked the crown of Good-Wealth's head, and grasped Good-Wealth's hand.
摩善財頂，執善財手 — stroked the crown of Good-Wealth's head, and grasped Good-Wealth's hand. Every teacher so far has answered Good-Wealth's question about their own liberation in speech, however brief. Bhīṣmottaranirghoṣa is the first to answer with contact alone — the demonstration itself becomes the explanation, as the next Part will show.
