The Kings of Nirmāṇarati and Tuṣita Testify
Two further heavens add their own witness — Nirmāṇarati, whose kings confess the fire reached even their own palace-maidens, and Tuṣita, whose kings and gods rained down fragrance before admitting the same teaching left them wanting nothing more than the roots of goodness it planted in them.
Even the Palace-Maidens Were Touched
Nirmāṇarati's kings testify to something none of the previous groups mentioned — the fire's light did not stop at their own palaces, but reached their palace-maidens directly, leaving both kings and maidens alike no longer wanting the pleasures of desire at all.
There were further ten thousand kings of the Nirmāṇarati heaven, in the sky above, making heavenly music, reverently making offerings, who spoke these words: "Good son, when this brahmin was scorching his own body with the five fires, the light of that fire illuminated our own palaces' every adornment and every one of our palace-maidens, causing us no longer to accept the pleasures of desire, no longer to seek the pleasures of desire, our bodies and minds becoming soft and pliant, so we, together with our whole assembly, came at once to his place. At that time, the brahmin taught the dharma for us, causing our minds to become pure, to become bright and clean, to become purely good, to become soft and pliant, and to give rise to joy, and even causing us to attain a pure body of the pure ten powers, giving rise to measureless bodies, and even causing us to attain a buddha's own body, a buddha's own speech, a buddha's own voice, a buddha's own mind, fully and completely accomplishing the wisdom of omniscience."
Fragrance from Tuṣita, Contentment as the Gift
Tuṣita's own contribution to this chorus of testimony is fragrance rained from the sky, and its own gift is the simplest one yet named — not power, not a buddha's body, but simply having few desires and knowing contentment.
There were further ten thousand kings of Tuṣita, together with sons of gods, daughters of gods, and measureless retinues, in the sky above, raining down every kind of wondrous fragrance, reverently bowing their heads in homage, who spoke these words: "Good son, when this brahmin was scorching his own body with the five fires, it caused all of us gods and our own retinues to feel no delight or attachment for our own palaces, so we came together to his place. Hearing him teach the dharma, it caused us no longer to crave any domain, to have few desires and know contentment, our minds giving rise to joy, our minds becoming full, giving rise to every root of goodness, giving rise to the mind of bodhi, and even perfecting every buddha-dharma."
少欲知足 — to have few desires and know contentment. Among every gift named across these testimonies — sovereignty, a buddha's own body, measureless forms — Tuṣita's own gift is the plainest, and perhaps for that reason the hardest: simply wanting less than before.
Part 969 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-four. Part 970 turns to the gods of the Heaven of the Thirty-Three, who confess that even Sumeru's own summit shook six ways when they first beheld this brahmin.
