Loving-Conduct's Own Answer

Rather than answering Good-Wealth's question in speech, Loving-Conduct tells him simply to look — and in every single wall, pillar, mirror, and jewel of her own hall, he sees the entire life story of every tathāgata in the dharma-realm playing out at once, like the sun and moon reflected together in still water.

Every Surface, a Complete Buddha's Life

What Good-Wealth sees is not a static image but a full sequence — first arising the mind of awakening, cultivating practice, fulfilling vows, attaining enlightenment, teaching the dharma, and finally entering nirvāṇa — repeated whole and entire in each and every wall, pillar, mirror, and jewel throughout the hall.

Ru-Yi Translation

At that time, the maiden Loving-Conduct said to Good-Wealth: "Good son, you should observe the adornment of my own palace." Good-Wealth bowed his head, and observed everywhere, and saw, within each and every wall, each and every pillar, each and every mirror, each and every mark, each and every shape, each and every maṇi jewel, each and every adorning implement, each and every golden bell, each and every jeweled tree, each and every jeweled image, and each and every jeweled necklace, entirely seeing every tathāgata of the dharma-realm, from their very first arising of the mind, cultivating the bodhisattva practices, fulfilling their great vows, perfecting their merit, accomplishing perfect enlightenment, turning the wondrous dharma-wheel, and even manifesting their entry into nirvāṇa; images such as these, none of them failing to appear, just as in pure water one universally sees every image of empty space's sun, moon, and constellations, and all of this is due to the power of Loving-Conduct's own roots of goodness planted in past lives. At that time, the boy Good-Wealth, calling to mind the marks of every buddha he had seen, joined his palms and gazed up at the maiden Loving-Conduct.

汝應觀我宮殿莊嚴 — you should observe the adornment of my own palace. This is the most literal version yet of a pattern already seen with several teachers — the answer to "how does a bodhisattva practice" turns out not to be a description at all, but an instruction to look directly at what the teacher's own attainment has already made visible.

Part 980 Complete

This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-five. Part 981 turns to Loving-Conduct naming her own liberation — the Universal Adornment Gate of Prajñāpāramitā — and its source: thirty-six Ganges' sands of buddhas, each of whom taught it to her through a different approach.
