The Universal Adornment Gate of Prajñāpāramitā

Loving-Conduct names her liberation and its source at once — thirty-six Ganges' sands of buddhas, each one teaching her through an entirely different gate, so that nothing any single buddha taught was ever repeated by another — before beginning to describe what entering this gate has actually opened up.

Thirty-Six Ganges' Sands, Never Repeating

Loving-Conduct's own claim is remarkable in its precision — not simply that many buddhas taught her, but that each one used a completely different gate, so that the sum of their teaching, rather than any single repeated lesson, is what actually built this liberation.

Ru-Yi Translation

At that time, the maiden said to Good-Wealth: "Good son, this is the Universal Adornment Gate of Prajñāpāramitā; I sought and attained this dharma at the places of thirty-six Ganges' sands of buddhas. Each of those tathāgatas, through a different gate, caused me to enter this Universal Adornment Gate of Prajñāpāramitā; what one buddha expounded, none of the others repeated." Good-Wealth said: "Noble one, what is the state of this Universal Adornment Gate of Prajñāpāramitā?" The maiden replied: "Good son, when I enter this Universal Adornment Gate of Prajñāpāramitā, following and moving toward it, reflecting upon and contemplating it, calling it to mind, upholding, and discerning it, I attain the dhāraṇī of the universal gate, and a hundred million asaṃkhyeyas of dhāraṇī-gates all appear before me entirely.

一佛所演,餘不重說 — what one buddha expounded, none of the others repeated. This detail sets Loving-Conduct apart from Rest-and-Release, who recalled thirty-six Ganges' sands of buddhas served in fascicle sixty-four without specifying what made each encounter distinct. Here, non-repetition itself is named as part of the teaching.

Part 981 Complete
