Loving-Conduct's Confession, and an Eleventh Teacher
The dhāraṇī-gate list closes on bodhicitta itself — arising, aided, purified — before Loving-Conduct turns to the same confession every teacher before her has made, and sends Good-Wealth south once more, this time to a monk whose very name, Well-Seen, promises to complete something her own gates of knowledge left open.
The List Closes on Bodhicitta Itself
After more than a hundred named gates, the list ends where the entire pilgrimage began — the mind of bodhi itself, its own arising, its own aid, and finally the plain purity of one's own mind, as though every gate before it had simply been circling back toward this single starting point.
The dhāraṇī-gate of entering the profound dharma, the dhāraṇī-gate of entering the subtle and wondrous dharma, the dhāraṇī-gate of the mind of bodhi, the dhāraṇī-gate of giving rise to the mind of bodhi, the dhāraṇī-gate of aiding the mind of bodhi, the dhāraṇī-gate of every vow, the dhāraṇī-gate of every practice, the dhāraṇī-gate of spiritual penetration, the dhāraṇī-gate of renunciation, the dhāraṇī-gate of the purity of total retention, the dhāraṇī-gate of the purity of the wheel of wisdom, the dhāraṇī-gate of the purity of wisdom, the dhāraṇī-gate of the immeasurability of bodhi, and the dhāraṇī-gate of the purity of one's own mind.
South Once More, to Well-Seen
Having just shown Good-Wealth over a hundred million dhāraṇī-gates, Loving-Conduct still calls her own knowledge a single gate among countless others, and sends him onward to a monk in the land of Three Eyes — a name that seems to promise more sight than her own hall of mirrors already offered.
"Good son, I know only this Universal Adornment Gate of Prajñāpāramitā. As for the great bodhisattvas, their minds vast and expansive, equal to the realm of empty space, entering the dharma-realm, their merit fulfilled and complete, abiding in the dharma that transcends the world, far removed from worldly conduct, their eye of wisdom without any cataract, universally observing the dharma-realm, their mind of wisdom vast and expansive just like empty space, clearly seeing every domain entirely, attaining the great treasury of light of the unobstructed ground, skillfully able to discern the meaning of every dharma, practicing worldly conduct without being stained by worldly dharmas, able to benefit the world without being destroyed by the world, universally becoming a support for every world, universally knowing every being's own mind and conduct, teaching the dharma in accordance with what is fitting for them, and forever attaining sovereignty at every moment — how could I possibly know or describe their own meritorious practice? Good son, to the south of here, there is a land named Three Eyes; there is a monk there named Well-Seen. Go to him and ask: 'How does a bodhisattva learn the bodhisattva practices, and cultivate the bodhisattva path?'" At that time, the boy Good-Wealth bowed his head at her feet, circumambulated her countless times, gazed up at her with longing affection, took his leave, and departed.
戀慕瞻仰 — gazing up at her with longing affection. This particular phrase for Good-Wealth's parting gaze has not appeared with any teacher before Loving-Conduct — neither the tears of Part 954 nor the joy of Part 963, but something closer to reluctance, as if this parting were harder to make than most.
Part 984 Complete
This continues chapter thirty-nine, 入法界品, in fascicle sixty-five. Part 985 turns to Good-Wealth's own extended reflection as he journeys toward Three Eyes, and his first sight of the monk Well-Seen walking in a forest, his every mark and feature described in full.
