Good-Wealth's Thirteenth Teacher Is Named
Sovereign Lord sends Good-Wealth to a laywoman named Endowed in the great city of Sea-Dwelling, and the mere sound of the name triggers a reaction unlike any teacher-naming so far — every hair on his body standing on end, and a whole cascade of vision, understanding, and merit opening at once.
Every Hair Standing on End
Naming Endowed does something no teacher's name has done before it — before Good-Wealth has even set out, hearing it alone gives him a rare mind of faith, sight of how every buddha arises in sequence, and the power to unlock the very city of the three realms of existence.
「善男子！於此南方，有一大城，名曰：海住；有優婆夷，名為：具足。汝詣彼問：菩薩云何學菩薩行、修菩薩道？」時，善財童子聞是語已，舉身毛豎，歡喜踊躍，獲得希有信樂寶心，成就廣大利眾生心，悉能明見一切諸佛出興次第，悉能通達甚深智慧清淨法輪，於一切趣皆隨現身，了知三世平等境界，出生無盡功德大海，放大智慧自在光明，開三有城所有關鑰；頂禮其足，遶無量匝，慇懃瞻仰，辭退而去。
"Good son, to the south of here, there is a great city named Sea-Dwelling; there is a laywoman named Endowed. Go to her and ask: 'How does a bodhisattva learn the bodhisattva practices, and cultivate the bodhisattva path?'" At that time, the boy Good-Wealth, having heard these words, every hair on his body stood on end, joyful and leaping with delight, attaining a rare and precious mind of faith and delight, accomplishing a vast mind of benefiting beings, entirely able to clearly see the sequence in which every buddha arises in the world, entirely able to penetrate the profound wisdom of the pure dharma-wheel, manifesting his own body in accordance with every realm of rebirth, clearly understanding the equal domain of the three times, giving rise to an inexhaustible great ocean of merit, emitting the sovereign light of great wisdom, and opening every lock and key of the city of the three realms of existence; he bowed his head at her feet, circumambulated her countless times, gazed up at her earnestly, took his leave, and departed.
舉身毛豎 — every hair on his body stood on end. This exact physical reaction has not appeared with any of the twelve teachers before Endowed — whatever her own name alone signals to Good-Wealth, it registers in his body before a single word of her own teaching has been spoken.
