Five More Rebirth-Dharmas, and a Closing Vista
The explanation of the ten rebirth-dharmas concludes: being born directly into the tathāgata's own family, the buddha's own power of light, discerning the inexhaustible gates of omniscience, adorning the whole Dharma-realm through transformation, and valiant diligence arriving at the buddha's own ground. A single closing paragraph then widens the frame to what a bodhisattva abiding in all ten makes possible across boundless kalpas.
Born Into the Family, the Buddha's Own Light, and Inexhaustible Wisdom
"Child of the Buddha, what is called the bodhisattva's rebirth-dharma of the Treasury of Being Born Into the Tathāgata's Own Family? This bodhisattva-mahāsattva, born into the tathāgata's own family, accords with every buddha's own teaching, becomes fully endowed with every profound Dharma-gate, is one with the great vow of every buddha of the three times, one with the roots of goodness of every buddha of the three times, and one with the Dharma-body of every buddha of the three times; departing far from the world, he turns toward the destiny that transcends the world, nurtures pure and stainless dharmas, abides in the Dharma-gate of great merit, attains the buddha's own sustaining samādhi, beholds every tathāgata according to what is fitting to transform beings, purifies every sentient being, does not abandon the great vow, and, hearing the Dharma, upholds it. Child of the Buddha, this is the sixth rebirth-dharma.
"Child of the Buddha, what is called the bodhisattva's rebirth-dharma of the Treasury of the Power of the Buddha's Own Light? This bodhisattva-mahāsattva deeply enters the buddha's own power, ranges universally through the ten directions, and makes offerings to buddhas, his mind never growing weary; he knows every dharma to be like an illusion, like a dream, form like a flash of lightning, and accomplishes, like a conjured being, sovereign, penetrating clarity; he knows every destiny of existence and birth to be like a shadow; he knows the Dharma-wheel turned by every buddha to be, in every case, like an echo, and thoroughly, to the very end, expounds the whole Dharma-realm. Child of the Buddha, this is the seventh rebirth-dharma.
"Child of the Buddha, what is called the bodhisattva's rebirth-dharma of the Treasury Fully Endowed With Discerning the Gate of Omniscience? This bodhisattva-mahāsattva, in the body of a youth, abides in the bodhisattva's own abiding, contemplates omniscience, and throughout boundless kalpas contemplates every single gate of wisdom, one after another; kalpas may yet be exhausted, but the gates of wisdom cannot be exhausted. Reaching the very end of the bodhisattva's own sovereign state, in every samādhi-gate, within every single thought-moment he goes universally to the buddhas of the ten directions, entering the indestructible state of samādhi, the boundless state of indestructible dharma and indestructible wisdom; he attains what is beyond every state, is fully endowed within the smallest state, attains the ground beyond all telling, and, within the boundless, attains the dharma that is bounded; he knows every worldly name to be a mere provisional designation, and discerns the dharma of every kind of language. Child of the Buddha, this is the eighth rebirth-dharma."
Fazang's gloss continues its short sequence: 六生佛家;七佛光力;八達佛智 — "sixth, being born into the buddha's own family; seventh, the buddha's own power of light; eighth, penetrating the buddha's own wisdom." The eighth carries an image worth pausing on: kalpas — the very unit this whole collection has used to measure the near-unimaginable — "may yet be exhausted," while the gates of wisdom cannot be. Even the account's largest available scale of time is offered here only to be found insufficient against the scope of what is being described.
Adorning the Dharma-Realm, Arriving at the Buddha-Ground, and a Closing Vista
"Child of the Buddha, what is called the bodhisattva's rebirth-dharma of the Treasury of the Transformative Adornment of the Whole Dharma-Realm? This bodhisattva-mahāsattva adorns boundless buddha-lands in every kind of way, reaches the very end of every transformation-body of sentient beings and every response-body of a buddha, relies on nothing whatsoever, and, through pure, dharmic transformation, universally practices throughout the whole unobstructed Dharma-realm; for whoever is fit to be transformed, he manifests a body before them, and teaches and shows every kind of the bodhisattva's own practice, skillfully able to give rise to the pure treasury of wisdom of every gate of omniscience, free of every obstruction, teaching and transforming sentient beings, never once missing the right moment. Child of the Buddha, this is the ninth rebirth-dharma.
"Child of the Buddha, what is called the bodhisattva's rebirth-dharma of the Treasury of Valiant Diligence, Arriving at the Buddha-Ground? This bodhisattva-mahāsattva receives, at the presence of every tathāgata of the three times, the Dharma of consecration, and, his state unobstructed throughout every world, the bodhisattva fully knows every sentient being of the three times, dying here and being born there, cultivating the bodhisattva's own practice; he knows every sentient being's own mind arising in due order; he knows every buddha of the three times, in due order, attaining the most correct awakening, and, through skillful means, knows the Dharma's own due order; he knows every kalpa's own due order of formation and destruction, and, according to what is fitting for sentient beings, manifests adornment, manifesting, in due order, the attainment of the most correct awakening; he turns the wheel of the true Dharma, teaching and transforming boundless, measureless sentient beings. Child of the Buddha, this is the tenth rebirth-dharma. A bodhisattva-mahāsattva, having abided in these dharmas, adorns every buddha-land in every kind of way throughout boundless koṭis of kalpas, teaching and transforming sentient beings amid a boundless ocean of dharmas and a boundless state, awakening them to the boundless streams of every Dharma-realm, manifesting every buddha's own inconceivable, space-like, profound state of Dharma, and, through boundless practices, gathering in sentient beings, manifesting the turning of the Dharma-wheel, and, throughout every world, upholding and guarding the buddha-dharma; entirely within every state, with a sublime, subtle voice, he expounds a cloud of the buddha's own true Dharma beyond all telling, abides in every Dharma-gate, advances toward the unobstructed path, and, adorning the bodhimaṇḍa with every dharma, according to whoever is fit to be delivered, becomes a buddha and arises in the world, teaching, transforming, and ripening boundless sentient beings."
Fazang closes his tenfold gloss: 九嚴法界;十懃至佛。由行此十行令諸菩薩得生佛家故也 — "ninth, adorning the Dharma-realm; tenth, diligently arriving at the buddha's own ground. By practicing these ten practices, bodhisattvas are thereby caused to be born into the buddha's own family." The tenth explanation, alone among the ten, ends by naming the actual endpoint the other nine have been building toward all along — "becomes a buddha and arises in the world" — and the paragraph that follows it, unmarked as a separate rebirth-dharma of its own, functions as Fazang's own fourth prose division: 四結歎益, a closing statement of benefit standing over all ten treasuries at once, not one of them individually.
Part 124 In Progress
All ten rebirth-dharmas are now fully explained in prose. Part 125 turns to their verse counterpart — ten stanzas, one for each rebirth-dharma in the same order — followed by the deva naming her own liberation as "boundless, sovereign mastery over every state."
