"You Ought to Know That Now Is the Time"

The former king, recognizing that these merits cannot be accomplished as a householder, asks the buddha's leave to renounce the world. Granted permission with a single line — "you ought to know that now is the time" — he and ten thousand of his own retinue leave the household life together, becoming great Dharma-masters who range through every world.

Ten Thousand Leave the Household Life Together

Ru-Yi Translation

"At that time, that king thought to himself: 'These merits, if I do not leave the household life, cannot be accomplished; I ought now to leave the household life and cultivate the path at the tathāgata's own presence.' He went before the buddha and said: 'I now wish to leave the household life and study the path, following the World-Honored One.' The buddha answered the king, saying: 'You ought to know that now is the time.' At that time, the king, together with ten thousand of his own retinue, left the household life to cultivate the path, and all attained the Dharma-gate of the Dhāraṇī of the True Lamp That Departs From the Darkness of Delusion, together with dhāraṇīs as numerous as motes of dust in every world. They further attained the bodhisattva's own ten illuminations, and a body of boundless eloquence, pure and unobstructed; going to the presence of every buddha, they entirely heard and upheld the buddha's own wheel of true Dharma, becoming great Dharma-masters, and, through the power of spiritual penetration, ranged throughout every world, manifesting a body before whoever was fit to be transformed. They praised the buddha's own Dharma, and every past bodhisattva's own conduct and past lives, and further praised the buddha's own boundless, measureless sovereign spiritual power, guarding and upholding the true Dharma."

Reading note — after Fazang

The buddha's own reply to the king's request — "宜知是時," you ought to know that now is the time — is a formula this collection has met before at moments of consequential renunciation: brief, unadorned, and granting exactly what was asked without elaboration. What follows compresses an entire second monastic career into a single sentence: dhāraṇīs, the ten illuminations, boundless eloquence, and a role as itinerant Dharma-master ranging through every world — the former king's own path now running in parallel to, rather than beneath, the son he has just crowned in his place.

Part 174 In Progress

The former king's own renunciation is complete. Part 175 turns to the new king — the prince himself, now sovereign — who, on the very day of his father's own attainment, receives the seven treasures of a wheel-turning king.
