Universal Friend Refers Onward at Once
Sudhana descends from the heavenly palace and arrives at Kapilavastu, meeting the boy's own teacher Universal Friend. Rather than teach directly, Universal Friend refers him at once to another boy — Skilled in Every Art, who has mastered the bodhisattva's own wisdom of letters.
A Boy Who Has Learned the Wisdom of Letters
「時，善財童子以聞法故，身心遍悅，不思議善根流派增廣，頭面敬禮天主光足，遶無數匝，戀仰辭去。從天宮下，漸向彼城，至遍友所，禮足圍遶，合掌恭敬，於一面立，白言：「聖者！我已先發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心，而未知菩薩云何學菩薩行、修菩薩道？我聞聖者善能誘誨，願為我說。」遍友答言：「善男子！此有童子名善知眾藝，學菩薩字智。汝可問之，當為汝說。」」
At that time, Sudhana, because of hearing this Dharma, was joyful throughout body and mind, his inconceivable roots of goodness flowing forth and increasing all the more; he bowed his head to the feet of Light, Lord of the Devas, circled her countless times in longing reverence, and took his leave. Descending from the heavenly palace, he made his way gradually toward that city, and arrived at the place of Universal Friend; he bowed at his feet, circled him, and stood to one side with palms joined in reverence, saying: "Noble one, I have already raised the mind set on unsurpassed, perfect awakening, but I do not yet know how a bodhisattva learns the bodhisattva's own practice and cultivates the bodhisattva's own path. I have heard that you, noble one, are skilled in guiding and instructing — I ask that you teach me." Universal Friend answered, saying: "Good man, here there is a boy named Skilled in Every Art, who has learned the bodhisattva's own wisdom of letters. You may go and ask him, and he shall teach you."
Universal Friend's entire episode consists of this single redirection — he offers no liberation of his own, only the name of the boy who can actually answer. Fazang reads such brief, purely referring teachers as structurally necessary rather than incomplete: the pilgrimage's own chain of 53 good friends sometimes advances not through a teaching received but through a teaching correctly located, and Universal Friend's own contribution is precisely that act of pointing.

Teacher 43, Universal Friend, is now complete in a single part. Part 225 turns to Sudhana's arrival before Skilled in Every Art, teacher 44, and the opening of his liberation — a wisdom of letters built from forty-two seed-syllables.
