Every Faculty Tamed, Unstained by the World
Maitreya's hymn reaches its close: Sudhana causes every boundless multitude of beings, together with every buddha and bodhisattva, to attain great rejoicing. His pure light of wisdom universally illuminates the Dharma of every land, so that every class of sentient being comes to see boundless buddhas; illuminating and clarifying every Dharma-realm, purifying the realm of sentient beings, he causes all to escape far from every evil destiny, dispelling the suffering of the three states of existence. He causes beings to leave every wrong path, revealing every good path, cultivating the eightfold true path, and establishing them upon the path of liberation. He brings every multitude of beings universally to cross the ocean of birth and death, dispelling every affliction, and establishing them upon the ocean of merit. Drying up the ocean of the afflictions, he causes beings to cross the ocean of the three states of existence, every faculty tamed, unstained by the world.
Maitreya's Second Great Hymn Concludes
「善財令一切， 無量諸群生，
諸佛及菩薩， 皆悉大歡喜。
善財淨慧光， 普照諸剎法，
一切眾生類， 皆見無量佛。
照明諸法界， 清淨眾生界，
遠離諸惡道， 除滅三有苦。
令眾離邪道， 顯現諸善道，
修習八正道， 安立解脫道。
普令諸群生， 度脫生死海，
除滅諸煩惱， 安住功德海。
消竭煩惱海， 令度三有海，
諸根悉調伏， 不染於世間。」

The hymn's very last line, "every faculty tamed, unstained by the world" (諸根悉調伏，不染於世間), closes on the same note of purity amid engagement that has run through the whole composition — Sudhana acts constantly within the world, rescuing, teaching, illuminating, and ferrying beings across oceans of suffering, yet remains himself untouched by what he moves through. Fazang reads this closing image as the hymn's true summary: everything praised across more than fifty stanzas comes down to this one paradox, of complete worldly engagement paired with complete non-attachment, which is itself the bodhisattva's own defining accomplishment.
The Taishō edition marks the end of this hymn with a "◎" symbol and closes fascicle fifty-eight of the sixty fascicles of this translation of the Avataṃsaka. Fascicle fifty-nine opens immediately after, continuing the very same scene without any narrative break — Maitreya, having praised Sudhana at such length, now turns to address the youth and the great assembly with an entirely new teaching.
Part 334 Complete — The Second Hymn Concludes
Maitreya's second vast hymn, addressed directly to Sudhana, is now complete in full. Part 335 turns to what follows: the opening of fascicle fifty-nine, a new sub-division of this final chapter, and the beginning of an entirely new and celebrated teaching — Maitreya's extended discourse on the mind of bodhi itself.
