Ten Minds Raised in Right Mindfulness
At that time, Sudhana, with right mindfulness, raised the mind of the vajra-treasury bodhimaṇḍa of every tathāgata, the mind of every jeweled lotus-treasury lion-throne; a mind equal to the very realm of space; a mind unattached to anything at all; a mind purifying every land without obstruction; a mind unobstructed toward the domain of every dharma; a mind filling the ten directions entire; a mind of the boundless domain of all-wisdom; a mind adorning the bodhimaṇḍa; a mind entering deeply and discerning the ocean of the Dharma; a vast mind teaching and maturing every sentient being; and the mind of carrying out bodhisattva practice across every kalpa, consummating the tathāgata's own ten powers.
From the Vajra-Treasury Bodhimaṇḍa to the Tathāgata's Ten Powers
This tenfold raising of mind functions as a formal act of preparation rather than mere description — Fazang reads it as the deliberate counterpart to the various preparatory postures (bowing, circumambulating, standing in contemplation) Sudhana performed before each of his prior fifty-two teachers, now intensified into a purely mental, meditative preparation befitting the culminating vision about to unfold. The vajra-treasury bodhimaṇḍa named first recalls the very seat where Śākyamuni himself attained awakening, and its pairing here with "space" and "the ten directions" as objects of mind establishes, before any vision is shown, that what Sudhana is about to witness will operate on the same unbounded scale already established throughout Maitreya's own tower vision — Samantabhadra's arrival is prepared for as at least equal in scope to what has come before.
Part 416 Complete
Sudhana's ten states of mind are now given in full. Part 417 turns to what these minds bring forth: through the power of his own roots of goodness, the buddha's own spiritual power, and Samantabhadra's own roots of goodness, Sudhana beholds ten auspicious signs unfolding across every pure land.
