Part 442 of the collection · Teacher 53 of 53: Samantabhadra (final hymn) · Fascicle 60 of 60 · T278

At Dīpaṃkara's Own Presence, the Prediction

The hymn continues: some see Treatise-Master Moon manifesting within Brahmā's own heavenly palace, and manifesting great sovereignty within Māra's own palace as well. Some see him within the Tuṣita palace, surrounded by the assembly of gods, proclaiming the true Dharma for their sake, causing them all to rejoice greatly. Some see him dwelling amid the Yāma heaven, amid Śakra and the four heavenly kings, and within the palaces of the nāga kings, the yakṣa kings, and the eight classes of beings. At the presence of the tathāgata Dīpaṃkara, he made offerings and attained his own prediction — through skillful means such as these, he teaches and transforms every multitude of beings. His light, his body, his lifespan, his pure wisdom and his retinue, his teaching, his deportment, and his voice — all of these are entirely beyond counting.

Every Heaven Visited, Every Attribute Beyond Counting

Reading note — after Fazang

Dīpaṃkara (錠光, "Lamp-Light," here transliterated by an alternate rendering of his name) is one of the most storied figures in the entire Buddhist canon — the buddha before whom Śākyamuni, in a celebrated past life recounted across many Buddhist traditions, spread his own hair over the mud so the buddha would not soil his feet, and received in return the very prediction of his own future buddhahood. Fazang reads this single verse's brief allusion to that famous episode as trusting the audience's own prior familiarity with it — the entire jātaka narrative compressed into "made offerings and attained his own prediction" — while "Treatise-Master Moon" (論師月) remains, per Fazang, a more obscure figure whose precise identity is less certain than Dīpaṃkara's own, possibly an honorific epithet for a specific bodhisattva known for composing treatises rather than a personal name in the ordinary sense.

Part 442 Complete

This stretch of the hymn is now given in full. Part 443 turns to the buddha's own body appearing equal in scale to sentient beings themselves — sometimes vast as Sumeru, sometimes filling the whole world, its light reaching from a single fathom to the entirety of the Dharma-realm.
