Ninety-Eight Buddhas

The kalpa of Stainless Light unfolds one buddha after another — ninety-eight named in unbroken sequence, each one met, each one reverently offered to, before the kalpa closes on its very last buddha. No name here is abbreviated or summarized; every one appears in full, exactly as the source names it.

Child of the Buddha, within this kalpa of Stainless Light, tathāgatas such as these, as numerous as motes of dust on Mount Sumeru, arose in the world, and the very last of these buddhas was named the Lamp of Bright, Pure Wisdom, the City of the Dharma-Realm. Every one of these tathāgatas I reverently made offering to; hearing the Dharma, I upheld it, left the household life to study the path, and guarded the buddha-Dharma; at the presence of every one of these buddhas, through manifold skillful means, I entered this very Dharma-gate of Profound Sublime Virtue, Sovereign Sound, and, through manifold skillful means, transformed the ocean of sentient beings. Furthermore, child of the Buddha, throughout further kalpas as numerous as motes of dust in every buddha-land, buddhas arose in the world, and I made reverent offering to every one of them as well."

Reading note — after Fazang

Fazang confirms the count exactly: 二次有佛下略列九十八佛。三佛子於離垢下總結須彌山塵等佛 — "second, beginning with 'next there was a buddha,' briefly lists ninety-eight buddhas; third, beginning with 'child of the Buddha, within Stainless Light,' concludes with buddhas as numerous as motes of dust on Mount Sumeru." Ninety-eight is the exact count this translation preserves, name for name, none abbreviated — a single, unbroken "next... next... next" that runs for dozens of lines before the account itself steps back to name what these ninety-eight actually stand in for: not the total number of buddhas of this kalpa, but a representative sample of a number the text can only gesture toward as "motes of dust on Mount Sumeru."

Read as a set rather than individually, these ninety-eight names recur around a small cluster of images — mountain, moon, cloud, lamp, lion, lotus, banner, treasury — recombined again and again into new compounds, "sublime virtue" (妙德) alone appearing in some form in more than a dozen of them. This is not an accident of translation; it is the source text's own pattern, a small vocabulary of cosmic imagery cycled through nearly a hundred permutations, each one naming a buddha this narrator claims to have personally met, offered to, and heard teach, within a single kalpa that is itself only one of countless kalpas her account has not yet even begun to describe.

Part 87 In Progress

Ninety-eight buddhas of the kalpa of Stainless Light have now been named in full, each one met, each one offered to, before the account gestures toward kalpas beyond counting still to come. Part 88 turns to the night-deva's own closing reflection — that she alone has awakened from a long sleep — before her self-limiting close and referral to the next teacher.
