Never Disparaging
Long ago, in the waning Dharma-age after an ancient buddha's parinirvāṇa, a bodhisattva monk practiced no scripture at all. He simply bowed to everyone he met — monastic or lay, welcoming or hostile — and told each of them: "I would never dare disparage you, for you are all practicing the bodhisattva path, and shall all become buddhas." For this, across many years, he was mocked, cursed, and struck with sticks and stones, and never once stopped saying it. At his death he attained the purified six senses of the previous two chapters — and the Buddha reveals, at this chapter's close, exactly who this monk was.
- This part covers
- The ancient buddha Bhīṣmagarjitasvararāja and the waning of his Dharma across two thousand koṭis of successive buddhas bearing his same name; the bodhisattva monk who, in that declining age, practiced no scripture at all but bowed to every person he met, telling them they would all become buddhas; the ridicule and physical violence he endured for this across many years without ever once abandoning the practice; his attainment, at the moment of death, of the very six purified senses described in Parts 20 and 21; and the Buddha's own revelation, closing the chapter, that this monk was himself in a former life — and that the very people who once mocked him are seated in this present assembly.
- Why it matters
- Zhiyi reads this chapter as this sūtra's most concrete demonstration of what Parts 2 and 3 first declared in the abstract — that every being already carries the buddha-nature the one vehicle points toward. Never-Disparaging's bow is not a courtesy; it is a doctrinal claim about who he is bowing to, made in a form simple enough to perform toward anyone, and dangerous enough that a whole community mocked and struck him for making it.
1. The Bodhisattva Who Bowed to Everyone
At that time the Buddha said to Mahāsthāmaprāpta Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva: "You should now know: should any monk, nun, layman, or laywoman who upholds this Lotus Sūtra be reviled, cursed, or slandered, that offender incurs a heavy retribution, exactly as described before; and the merit such a person gains is exactly as just described — the purification of the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. "Mahāsthāmaprāpta! Long ago, past immeasurable, boundless, inconceivable asaṃkhyeya kalpas, there was a buddha named Bhīṣmagarjitasvararāja Tathāgata, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly and Fully Awakened, Complete in Understanding and Conduct, Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed Being, Tamer of Those to be Tamed, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, World-Honored One. His kalpa was named Freedom from Decline, and his land was named Great Accomplishment. This Buddha Bhīṣmagarjitasvararāja, in that age, taught the Dharma for the sake of gods, humans, and asuras: for those seeking the śrāvaka path, he taught the Dharma fitting the four noble truths, to bring them across birth, old age, sickness, and death, to the final attainment of nirvāṇa; for those seeking the pratyekabuddha path, he taught the Dharma fitting the twelve links of dependent origination; and for the bodhisattvas, on account of unsurpassed, perfect and complete awakening, he taught the Dharma fitting the six perfections, to the final attainment of the buddha's own wisdom. "Mahāsthāmaprāpta! This Buddha Bhīṣmagarjitasvararāja lived for four hundred thousand myriad koṭis of nayutas of Ganges-sands of kalpas; his true Dharma remained in the world for a number of kalpas equal to the fine dust of a single Jambudvīpa, and its semblance remained for a number of kalpas equal to the fine dust of the four continents. Having benefited beings in this way, this buddha then attained parinirvāṇa. After his true Dharma and its semblance had both entirely disappeared, in this same land, another buddha arose, likewise named Bhīṣmagarjitasvararāja Tathāgata, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly and Fully Awakened, Complete in Understanding and Conduct, Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed Being, Tamer of Those to be Tamed, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, World-Honored One. In this way, one after another, there were twenty thousand koṭis of buddhas, every one bearing this same name. "After the very first Buddha Bhīṣmagarjitasvararāja had attained parinirvāṇa, and his true Dharma had disappeared, during the age of its semblance, monks of great arrogance held great power. At that time there was a bodhisattva monk named Never Disparaging. Mahāsthāmaprāpta! By what cause and condition was he named Never Disparaging? Whomever this monk happened to see — whether monk, nun, layman, or laywoman — he would bow before them and praise them, saying: 'I deeply revere you; I would never dare disparage or treat you with contempt. Why is this so? Because every one of you practices the bodhisattva path, and shall attain buddhahood.' This monk did not devote himself to reading and reciting the scriptures at all, but only to bowing; and even seeing the fourfold assembly from far away, he would deliberately go to them, bow, and praise them, saying: 'I would never dare disparage you — you shall all attain buddhahood.'"
Zhiyi is careful to note what this monk's practice deliberately excludes: he is a bodhisattva monk who "did not devote himself to reading and reciting the scriptures" at all — no textual study, no formal exposition, nothing this sūtra has spent twenty-one chapters describing as the marks of a teacher of the Dharma. What he practices instead, on Zhiyi's reading, is this sūtra's central claim reduced to a single repeatable gesture: the bow itself asserts that the person bowed to already possesses buddha-nature, is already walking the bodhisattva path whether they know it or not, and will certainly become a buddha in time. Zhiyi calls this claim, made toward every single person without exception, "opening the provisional to reveal the real" performed as an action rather than argued as a doctrine — the same four-part unity of person, principle, practice, and teaching that Parts 2 and 3 first laid out in direct speech, now compressed into a single bow anyone could recognize, and anyone could dismiss.
2. Mockery, Endurance, and a Deathbed Transformation
"Among the fourfold assembly, there were those whose hearts gave rise to anger and impurity, who reviled him with foul words, saying: 'Where has this monk of no wisdom come from, who declares of his own accord, "I do not disparage you," and bestows on us this prediction, that we shall attain buddhahood? We have no use for so false a prediction as this.' In this way, across many years, he was constantly reviled, yet never once gave rise to anger, and constantly said: 'You shall attain buddhahood.' Whenever he spoke these words, people would sometimes strike and pelt him with sticks, staves, tiles, and stones; he would flee and stand at a distance, yet still cry out in a loud voice: 'I would never dare disparage you — you shall all attain buddhahood.' Because he constantly spoke these words, the monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen of great arrogance named him Never Disparaging. When this monk was about to die, in the midst of the empty sky he heard, in full, the twenty thousand myriad koṭis of verses of the Lotus Sūtra that Buddha Bhīṣmagarjitasvararāja had taught long before, and was able to uphold every one of them, and at once attained the very purification of the eye faculty, and of the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind faculties, described above. Having attained this purification of the six faculties, his lifespan increased by a further two hundred myriad koṭis of nayutas of years, and he broadly taught this Lotus Sūtra to others. At that time, the fourfold assembly of great arrogance — the monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen who had treated this person with contempt, and given him the name Never Disparaging — seeing that he had attained this great power of spiritual penetration, this power of unobstructed eloquence, this power of great and skillful stillness, and hearing what he now taught, all came to believe, submit, and follow him. This bodhisattva then transformed thousands of myriads of koṭis of beings, causing them to abide in unsurpassed, perfect and complete awakening. After his death, he encountered two thousand koṭis of buddhas, every one named Candrasūryapradīpa, and in the presence of their Dharma, taught this Lotus Sūtra. By this same cause and condition, he encountered, further, two thousand koṭis of buddhas, all named Meghasvararāja, and in the presence of these buddhas' Dharma, upheld, read, and recited it, and, teaching this sūtra to the fourfold assembly, attained this same constant purity of the eye, and purity of the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind faculties, and taught the Dharma before the fourfold assembly with a heart free of any fear. "Mahāsthāmaprāpta! This Never-Disparaging Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva, having made offerings to so many buddhas as these, revering, honoring, and praising them, and planting every good root, afterward encountered, further, thousands of myriads of koṭis of buddhas, and, in the presence of these buddhas' Dharma as well, taught this sūtra, his merit brought to completion, until he attained buddhahood."
Zhiyi maps this monk's endurance onto the same three disciplines Part 11 first named as the room, robe, and seat of the Tathāgata: his deep reverence toward those who mock him is the Tathāgata's seat; his patient endurance of blows and curses, without retaliation, is the Tathāgata's robe; and his unbroken compassion, continuing the same practice for years without exception, is the Tathāgata's room. Nothing in the text suggests his persecutors ever stopped mocking him before his own death approached — his transformation comes not because the hostility relented, but because his practice never did.
3. "That Monk Was Myself"
"Mahāsthāmaprāpta! What do you think — was that Never-Disparaging Bodhisattva at that time some other person? He was none other than myself. Had I not, in that past life, upheld, read, and recited this sūtra, and taught it to others, I would not have been able to attain unsurpassed, perfect and complete awakening so swiftly. It was because, in the presence of buddhas before, I upheld, read, and recited this sūtra, and taught it to others, that I attained unsurpassed, perfect and complete awakening so swiftly. "Mahāsthāmaprāpta! Those members of the fourfold assembly at that time — the monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen who, with hearts of anger, treated me with contempt — for two hundred koṭis of kalpas, constantly failed to encounter a buddha, to hear the Dharma, or to see the monastic community, and for a thousand kalpas underwent great suffering in the Avīci hell. Having exhausted this offense, they again encountered Never-Disparaging Bodhisattva, and were taught and guided by him toward unsurpassed, perfect and complete awakening. "Mahāsthāmaprāpta, what do you think? Were those members of the fourfold assembly at that time, who constantly treated this bodhisattva with contempt, some other people? They are none other than the five hundred bodhisattvas headed by Bhadrapāla now present in this very assembly, the five hundred monks headed by Siṃhacandra, and the five hundred laywomen headed by Bhikṣudāsī — every one of them now abiding, without turning back, in unsurpassed, perfect and complete awakening. "Mahāsthāmaprāpta! You should know that this Lotus Sūtra greatly benefits every bodhisattva-mahāsattva, able to bring them to unsurpassed, perfect and complete awakening. For this reason, every bodhisattva-mahāsattva, after the Tathāgata's own parinirvāṇa, should constantly uphold, read, recite, explain, and copy this sūtra."
At that time the World-Honored One, wishing to proclaim this meaning once more, spoke in verse: "In the past there was a buddha, named Bhīṣmagarjitasvararāja, of immeasurable spiritual wisdom, guiding all beings — gods, humans, dragons, and spirits alike made him their offerings. After this buddha's parinirvāṇa, as the Dharma was about to disappear, there was a bodhisattva, named Never Disparaging. At that time the fourfold assembly was attached to the Dharma as a fixed thing. The bodhisattva Never Disparaging went to where they were, and said to them: 'I do not disparage you — practicing the path as you do, you shall all attain buddhahood.' Hearing this, the people treated him with contempt and reviled him; yet the bodhisattva Never Disparaging was able to bear it with patience. When this offense of theirs was exhausted, and his own life was about to end, he came to hear this sūtra, and his six faculties were purified. By this power of spiritual penetration, his lifespan was extended, and he taught this sūtra broadly to others once more. Every one of those attached to the Dharma as a fixed thing received this bodhisattva's own teaching and guidance, and was brought to abide in the buddha-path. When Never Disparaging's own life ended, he encountered countless buddhas; because he taught this sūtra, he gained immeasurable good fortune, gradually became complete in merit, and swiftly accomplished the buddha-path. That Never Disparaging, at that time, was none other than myself. The members of the fourfold assembly at that time, attached to the Dharma as a fixed thing, who heard Never Disparaging say: 'You shall attain buddhahood' — by this very cause and condition, they encountered countless buddhas. The five hundred bodhisattvas in this present assembly, together with the fourfold assembly, the pure and faithful laymen and laywomen, now listening to the Dharma before me — these are exactly those same people. In a former life, I urged these very people to hear and accept this sūtra, the foremost of all teachings, opening, revealing, and teaching them, causing them to abide in nirvāṇa, upholding this very sūtra life after life. Only after koṭis upon koṭis of kalpas, beyond all conceiving, were they able, at last, to hear this Lotus Sūtra. Only after koṭis upon koṭis of kalpas, beyond all conceiving, do buddhas and world-honored ones, at their own appointed time, teach this sūtra. For this reason, one who practices should, on hearing such a sūtra as this after the Buddha's parinirvāṇa, give rise to no doubt at all — one should, with a single mind, broadly teach this sūtra, and, encountering buddhas life after life, swiftly accomplish the buddha-path."
Zhiyi reads the mockers' punishment and eventual rescue together, not separately, as the chapter's real point about how hostile hearing of this teaching still functions. Their contempt for Never-Disparaging's claim earns them centuries in the Avīci hell — the sūtra does not soften this consequence or explain it away. Yet Zhiyi also notes, drawing on the image of a legendary drum whose very sound kills anyone who hears it regardless of their intention toward it, that even a hostile encounter with the claim that one possesses buddha-nature plants something that cannot be undone: those same mockers are, by this chapter's own account, seated in this present assembly, now "abiding without turning back" in awakening, brought there in the end by the very bodhisattva they once cursed and struck. The chapter's closing identification — that this monk was Śākyamuni himself, and that the sūtra's present audience includes his former persecutors — turns the whole preceding narrative from an ancient parable into a claim about the room the reader is sitting in.
