What Holds the World Up
This page carries Ru-Yi's complete translation of fascicle 11, Chapter 3's fourth installment (分別世品第三之四, the Loka-nirdeśa's fourth part), marking a decisive shift in subject: having finished the world of sentient beings, the treatise turns to the container world itself — the physical cosmos's own literal architecture, built from the ground up from a wind wheel resting on empty space, through Mount Sumeru and its nine mountains and eight seas, the four great continents, the hells beneath them, the heavens above them, and the body sizes and lifespans that scale, by simple repeated rules, across every single realm.
1. The Wind Wheel, the Water Wheel, and the Gold Wheel
Having finished the world of sentient beings, the treatise turns to the container world's literal architecture: a wind wheel at the very bottom, immeasurably vast and harder than diamond; a water wheel formed from karmically-caused rain falling upon it, so enormous it takes some explaining why it doesn't simply disperse; and a gold wheel congealing from the water's upper layer under the beating of a further karmic wind, exactly the way a skin forms on the surface of boiled milk left to stand.
如是已說有情世間。器世間今當說。頌曰:安立器世間,風輪最居下,其量廣無數,厚十六洛叉,次上水輪深,十一億二萬,下八洛叉水,餘凝結成金,此水金輪廣,徑十二洛叉,三千四百半,周圍此三倍。論曰:許此三千大千世界如是安立形量不同。謂諸有情業增上力,先於最下依止虛空有風輪生,廣無數、厚十六億踰繕那。如是風輪其體堅密,假設有一大諾健那,以金剛輪奮威懸擊,金剛有碎風輪無損。又諸有情業增上力,起大雲雨澍風輪上,滴如車軸積水成輪。如是水輪於未凝結位,深十一億二萬踰繕那。如何水輪不傍流散?有餘師說:一切有情業力所持令不流散。如所飲食未熟變時,終不流移墮於熟藏。有餘部說:由風所持令不流散,如篅持穀。有情業力感別風起,搏擊此水上結成金,如熟乳停上凝成膜,故水輪減唯厚八洛叉,餘轉成金,厚三億二萬。二輪廣量其數是同,謂徑十二億三千四百半。周圍其邊數成三倍,謂周圍量成三十六億一萬三百五十踰繕那。
Sentient beings' world has thus been fully discussed. The container world should now be discussed. Verse: in the establishment of the container world, the wind wheel dwells at the very lowest position; its extent is immeasurably vast, and its thickness is 1,600,000 yojanas. Next, above it, the water wheel: its depth is 1,120,000 yojanas. Of this, the lower 800,000 remains water, while the rest congeals into gold. This water-and-gold wheel's breadth, in diameter, is 1,203,450 yojanas; its circumference is three times this. Prose: it is accepted that this great trichiliocosm is established with distinct shapes and measurements in the following way. That is: through the dominant power of sentient beings' karma, first, at the very lowest position, resting upon empty space, a wind wheel arises — immeasurably vast in extent, 1,600,000 yojanas thick. This wind wheel's substance is so solid and dense that, even supposing a great nārāyaṇa deity were to swing a vajra wheel with all his might and strike it, the vajra might shatter while the wind wheel remains undamaged. Furthermore, through the dominant power of sentient beings' karma, great clouds arise and pour rain down upon the wind wheel, the drops as large as cart-axles, accumulating water that forms a wheel. Before it congeals, this water wheel is 1,120,000 yojanas deep. How does the water wheel not disperse and flow away at its sides? Some masters say: it is held together by the karmic power of all sentient beings collectively, preventing it from dispersing — just as food not yet transformed by digestion never flows out and falls into the organ that processes what is already digested. Other schools say: it is held together by wind, preventing it from dispersing — just as a grain-basket holds grain. Sentient beings' karmic power gives rise to a specific wind, which beats upon this water from above, causing it to congeal into gold — just as milk, once boiled and left standing, congeals a skin on its surface. Hence the water wheel is reduced to only 800,000 yojanas thick, and the remainder turns into gold, 320,000 yojanas thick. The breadth of these two wheels is the same in measure — namely, a diameter of 1,203,450 yojanas. Their circumferential measure comes to three times this — namely, a circumference of 3,610,350 yojanas.
A note on units, established here at the outset and applying to all of fascicle 11's cosmological measurements: the text uses 洛叉 (lakṣa, 100,000) and 億 interchangeably for the very same figure — the verse gives the wind wheel's thickness as "十六洛叉" (16 lakṣa), and the prose restates this identical figure as "十六億." We take this as direct textual evidence that, in this passage, 億 functions as a synonym for lakṣa (100,000) rather than the modern Chinese value of 100,000,000, and have translated all such figures throughout on this basis, converting the classical numeral compounds into plain decimal yojana counts for readability.
The whole passage insists on a strikingly consistent principle: every stage of the physical universe's formation — the wind wheel's very existence, the rain that becomes the water wheel, the specific secondary wind that congeals part of that water into gold — is explicitly attributed to "the dominant power of sentient beings' karma" (有情業增上力), not to impersonal physical law. The cosmos, on this account, is not a neutral stage on which karma later plays out; it is itself already a collective karmic product from its very first, most basic structural layer.
Correction (added after initial publication): this note originally read the verse's "三千四百半" as 3,400.5 and flagged an apparent ~148.5-yojana gap between the stated diameter and circumference. That reading was our error. Cross-checking against the parallel figure for Aparagodānīya's circumference later in this fascicle ("周圍七千半" = 7,000 plus half of the just-named thousands-place = 7,500, exactly three times its 2,500 diameter) shows that "半" here means half of the nearest larger place-value already named in the same numeral, not a bare "point five." Applied to "三千四百半," that gives 3,400 plus half of the hundreds-place just named (100 ÷ 2 = 50) = 3,450, not 3,400.5 — and 1,203,450 × 3 = 3,610,350 exactly, matching the prose's circumference figure with no gap at all. We have corrected the diameter above from 1,203,400.5 to 1,203,450 accordingly. We leave this note in place, rather than silently deleting it, as a record of the correction.
2. Nine Mountains on the Gold Wheel: Sumeru and Its Seven Rings
Upon the gold wheel rise nine great mountains: Sumeru at the very center, surrounded by seven concentric rings of gold mountains, with the Cakravāḍa — the iron mountain range — encircling the whole system like a rim. Sumeru alone is built of four precious substances, one to each face, its southern lapis-lazuli side explaining why the sky above Jambudvīpa itself looks blue.
頌曰:蘇迷盧處中,次踰健達羅,伊沙馱羅山,朅地洛迦山,蘇達梨舍那,頞濕縛羯拏,毘那怛迦山,尼民達羅山,於大洲等外,有鐵輪圍山,前七金所成,蘇迷盧四寶,入水皆八萬,妙高出亦然,餘八半半下,廣皆等高量。論曰:於金輪上有九大山,妙高山王處中而住,餘八周匝繞妙高山。於八山中前七名內,第七山外有大洲等。此外復有鐵輪圍山,周匝如輪圍一世界。持雙等七唯金所成。妙高山王四寶為體,謂如次四面北、東、南、西,金、銀、吠琉璃、頗胝迦寶。隨寶威德色顯於空,故贍部洲空似吠琉璃色。
Verse: Mount Sumeru dwells at the center; next comes Yugandhara, Mount Īṣadhara, Mount Khadiraka, Sudarśana, Aśvakarṇa, Mount Vinataka, Mount Nimindhara; and beyond the great continents and the rest, there is the Cakravāḍa, the iron encircling mountain range. The first seven are made entirely of gold; Sumeru is composed of four precious substances. All sink 80,000 yojanas into the water; Sumeru's height above the water is likewise 80,000. The remaining eight decrease by half each in succession; each one's breadth equals its own height above the water. Prose: upon the gold wheel there are nine great mountains. King Sumeru dwells at the center, while the remaining eight surround it on all sides. Among these eight, the first seven are called "inner"; outside the seventh mountain lie the great continents and the rest. Beyond these, there is furthermore the Cakravāḍa, encircling the whole like a wheel-rim around a single world-system. Yugandhara and the six mountains after it are made entirely of gold. King Sumeru's substance consists of four precious materials — namely, on its four faces, in order, north, east, south, and west: gold, silver, lapis lazuli, and crystal. In accordance with each jewel's radiant power, its color is reflected in the sky above; hence the sky above Jambudvīpa resembles the color of lapis lazuli.
The seven inner mountain names — Yugandhara, Īṣadhara, Khadiraka, Sudarśana, Aśvakarṇa, Vinataka, and Nimindhara — are given here in their standard Sanskrit forms rather than as literal translations of Xuánzàng's phonetic transliterations, since these are well-established proper names in Buddhist cosmological literature rather than descriptive terms coined by this text. Jambudvīpa's lapis-colored sky is a small but memorable piece of applied cosmology: it isn't simply blue by nature, but blue specifically because it faces the lapis-lazuli southern side of a mountain most of its inhabitants will never see, hundreds of thousands of yojanas away.
3. Where the Jewels Come From, and a Refutation of Sāṃkhya "Transformation"
Sumeru's precious substances arise the same way everything else in the container world has so far: karmically-driven clouds, rain, and wind acting on water. But the treatise pauses here to make a sharper philosophical point about exactly what kind of change this is — water turning into jewels is cause ceasing as effect arises, never a single persisting substance merely taking on new forms, and this becomes the occasion for a pointed refutation of the Sāṃkhya school's rival theory of "transformation."
如是寶等從何而生?亦諸有情業增上力。復大雲起雨金輪上滴如車軸,積水奔濤,其水即為眾寶種藏。由具種種威德猛風鑽擊變生眾寶類等。如是變水生寶等時,因滅果生,體不俱有,非如數論轉變所成。數論云何執轉變義?謂執有法自性常存,有餘法生、有餘法滅。如是轉變何理相違?謂必無容有法常住,可執別有法滅法生。誰言法外別有有法?唯即此法於轉變時異相所依名為有法。此亦非理。非理者何?即是此物而不如此,如是言義曾所未聞。
From where, then, do these jewels and the like arise? This, too, is through the dominant power of sentient beings' karma. Once again, great clouds arise and rain down upon the gold wheel, the drops as large as cart-axles; the accumulated water, surging and churning, becomes itself the very womb and repository of the various jewels' seeds. Through the action of fierce winds possessed of various kinds of majestic power, boring and striking, this water is transformed, giving rise to the various kinds of jewels. In this transformation of water into the production of jewels and the like, the cause ceases as the effect arises — the two essential natures are never simultaneously present — unlike what the Sāṃkhya school's theory of "transformation" holds. How does the Sāṃkhya school maintain its notion of "transformation"? It holds that there is an underlying substrate-dharma whose own essential nature persists permanently, while other dharmas arise and cease upon it. What principle does such a "transformation" actually violate? Namely: there can be no case in which a persisting substrate-dharma is simultaneously held to have some other, distinct dharma cease and arise upon it. Who says there exists, apart from the dharma itself, some further, separate "substrate-dharma"? It is precisely this very same dharma that, at the moment of "transformation," is merely the basis of a different characteristic — and this alone is what gets called the "substrate-dharma." This, too, is unreasonable. Why is it unreasonable? Because saying that this very same thing is not, in fact, this same thing — a statement of this kind has never been heard of before.
This brief digression is a compressed but genuine philosophical argument, worth pausing on: Sāṃkhya's pariṇāma ("transformation") theory of causation holds that an effect is already latently present within its cause, which then merely modifies its outward appearance while its underlying essential nature (prakṛti) persists unchanged — much like clay remaining clay while taking the shape of a pot. The Abhidharma position argued here is the opposite: causation is strictly sequential, the cause's own existence ceasing at the very moment the effect's existence begins, with no single persisting substance carried across the transition at all. The closing jab — "saying that this very same thing is not, in fact, this same thing has never been heard of" — is aimed at Sāṃkhya's attempt to have it both ways: claiming a persisting substrate while also admitting that substrate takes on genuinely different characteristics, which this text considers simply incoherent once stated plainly. This same momentariness (kṣanika) principle underlies much of this tradition's Abhidharma project as a whole, and it is notable that even a physical-cosmology passage about jewels forming from water pauses to make the point explicitly.
4. Sorting the World: Mountains, Continents, Fresh and Salt Seas
A further karmic wind now sorts the transformed jewels and water into their final places — gathering matter into mountains and continents, and dividing water into fresh and salt to form the inner and outer seas. The section closes with the precise depths at which all nine mountains sink into the water, and the halving pattern by which the eight outer mountains' heights above the water — and thus their widths — decrease all the way down to the outermost Cakravāḍa.
如是變生金寶等已,復由業力引起別風,簡別寶等攝令聚集成山成洲,分水甘醎令別成立內海外海。如是九山住金輪上,入水量皆等八萬踰繕那,蘇迷盧山出水亦爾。餘八出水半半漸卑,謂初持雙出水四萬,乃至最後鐵輪圍山出水三百一十二半。如是九山一一廣量,各各與自出水量同。
Once gold, jewels, and the like have thus been produced through transformation, karmic power further gives rise to a distinct wind, which sorts and separates the jewels and the rest, gathering them together to form mountains and continents, and dividing the water into fresh and salt, thereby separately establishing the inner and outer seas. In this way, the nine mountains, resting upon the gold wheel, each sink into the water to a depth equally of 80,000 yojanas; Mount Sumeru's height above the water is likewise 80,000. The remaining eight mountains rise above the water by half as much again in succession, decreasing in height — that is, the first, Yugandhara, rises 40,000 above the water, and so on, down to the last, the Cakravāḍa, which rises 312.5 yojanas above the water. In this way, each of the nine mountains' breadth is, in each and every case, equal to its own height above the water.
The halving sequence checks out exactly: starting from Yugandhara's 40,000 yojanas and halving seven more times (once for each of the remaining seven outer mountains) gives 20,000, 10,000, 5,000, 2,500, 1,250, 625, and finally 312.5 for the Cakravāḍa — precisely the figure the text states. This kind of internal arithmetic consistency, verifiable by simply running the stated halving rule forward, gives real confidence in the numbers as transmitted, in contrast to some of the more compressed figures earlier in this fascicle whose derivation could not be independently checked.
The elegant rule that each mountain's width always equals its own height above the water means the whole nine-mountain system is built from a single repeated proportion: every ring, going outward from Sumeru, is a smaller version of the same basic shape, halved at each step — a tidy, self-similar architecture governing the entire visible structure of a world-system.
5. Eight Seas: The Seven Inner Waters and the Vast Outer Ocean
Between the nine mountains lie eight seas. The seven inner ones, nestled between Sumeru and the surrounding rings, share water with eight distinct excellent qualities and narrow by half at each successive ring; the eighth and outermost, beyond the seventh mountain, is instead filled with ordinary salt water and dwarfs all seven inner seas combined.
頌曰:山間有八海,前七名為內,最初廣八萬,四邊各三倍,餘六半半陿,第八名為外,三洛叉二萬,二千踰繕那。論曰:妙高為初、輪圍最後,中間八海,前七名內。七中皆具八功德水:一甘、二冷、三軟、四輕、五清淨、六不臭、七飲時不損喉、八飲已不傷腹。如是七海初廣八萬,約持雙山內邊周量,於其四面數各三倍,謂各成二億四萬踰繕那。其餘六海量半半陿,謂第二海量廣四萬,乃至第七量廣一千二百五十。此等不說周圍量者,以煩多故。第八名外,醎水盈滿,量廣三億二萬二千。
Verse: among the mountains there are eight seas; the first seven are called "inner." The very first is 80,000 wide, with each of its four sides three times this in circumference. The remaining six narrow by half each in succession. The eighth is called "outer," measuring 322,000 yojanas wide. Prose: with Sumeru first and the Cakravāḍa last, there are eight seas in between; the first seven are called "inner." All seven possess water endowed with eight excellent qualities: first, sweet; second, cool; third, soft; fourth, light; fifth, clear and pure; sixth, odorless; seventh, does not harm the throat when drunk; eighth, does not injure the stomach once drunk. These seven seas: the first is 80,000 wide, reckoned along Yugandhara's inner edge, and, on each of its four sides, three times this figure — that is, each side comes to 240,000 yojanas. The remaining six seas narrow by half each in succession — that is, the second sea measures 40,000 in width, and so on down to the seventh, which measures 1,250 in width. For these, the circumferential measure is not given, since it would be overly elaborate. The eighth is called "outer"; filled with salt water, it measures 322,000 yojanas in width.
The halving sequence again checks out precisely: 80,000 halved six times (once per remaining inner sea) gives 40,000, 20,000, 10,000, 5,000, 2,500, and 1,250 for the seventh — exactly matching the stated figure, and consistent with the same halving logic already verified for the mountains themselves in the previous section. The whole nine-mountain, eight-sea system is evidently built from a single, elegant, repeatedly-halved proportion radiating outward from Sumeru, broken only by the outermost outer sea and the Cakravāḍa, which stand apart from this pattern as the boundary of the entire world-system.
The eight qualities of the inner seas' water read like a connoisseur's tasting notes for a substance meant to be perfect in every register — taste (sweet), temperature (cool), texture (soft, light), purity (clear, odorless), and even its effect on the body when swallowed (gentle on the throat, gentle on the stomach). This is a notably embodied, almost sensory list for a cosmological text otherwise dominated by pure measurement, and it stands in deliberate contrast with the eighth sea's bare, unqualified salt water beyond the last inner ring.
6. The Four Great Continents: Cart, Half-Moon, Full Moon, and Square
Beyond the seventh mountain, in the outer sea, four great continents face Mount Sumeru on its four sides, each a different shape facing a different direction: Jambudvīpa in the south, cart-shaped, home to the Vajrāsana where every bodhisattva sits to attain awakening; Pūrvavideha in the east, half-moon-shaped; Aparagodānīya in the west, perfectly round; and Uttarakuru in the north, square. Even the inhabitants' faces are said to mirror their own continent's shape.
頌曰:於中大洲相,南贍部如車,三邊各二千,南邊有三半;東毘提訶洲,其相如半月,三邊如贍部,東邊三百半;西瞿陀尼洲,其相圓無缺,徑二千五百,周圍此三倍;北俱盧畟方,面各二千等,中洲復有八,四洲邊各二。論曰:於外海中大洲有四,謂於四面對妙高山。南贍部洲北廣南陿,三邊量等,其相如車。南邊唯廣三踰繕那半,三邊各有二千踰繕那。唯此洲中有金剛座,上窮地際下據金輪,一切菩薩將登正覺皆坐此座上起金剛喻定,以無餘依及餘處所有堅固力能持此故。東勝身洲東陿西廣,三邊量等,形如半月。東三百五十,三邊各二千。西牛貨洲圓如滿月,徑二千五百,周圍七千半。北俱盧洲形如方座,四邊量等,面各二千。等言為明無少增減。隨其洲相人面亦然。復有八中洲,是大洲眷屬,謂四大洲側各有二中洲。
Verse: among these, the great continents' shapes: the southern, Jambudvīpa, is shaped like a cart, its three sides each 2,000 yojanas, its southern side 3.5. The eastern, Videha, is shaped like a half-moon; its three sides are as Jambudvīpa's, its eastern side 350. The western, Godānīya, is perfectly round without any gap, 2,500 in diameter, its circumference three times this. The northern, Kuru, is square, each face equally 2,000. There are, besides, eight intermediate continents, two beside each of the four great continents. Prose: within the outer sea there are four great continents, situated facing Mount Sumeru on its four sides. Jambudvīpa in the south is broad in the north and narrow in the south; its three equal sides are of equal measure, and its shape resembles a cart. Its southern side alone is only 3.5 yojanas wide; its other three sides are each 2,000 yojanas. Only within this continent is there the Vajrāsana, the Diamond Seat — reaching upward to the very limit of the earth's surface and resting below upon the gold wheel — upon which every bodhisattva, when about to attain complete awakening, sits to enter the vajra-like concentration, since nowhere else has ground with sufficient firm supporting power to hold it. Pūrvavideha in the east is narrow in the east and broad in the west; its three sides are of equal measure, its shape like a half-moon. Its eastern side is 350; its other three sides are each 2,000. Aparagodānīya in the west is round like a full moon, 2,500 in diameter, with a circumference of 7,500. Uttarakuru in the north is shaped like a square seat, its four sides of equal measure, each face 2,000. The word "equally" is meant to clarify that there is not the slightest increase or decrease among the four faces. The inhabitants' faces, in each continent, correspondingly resemble the shape of their own continent. There are, moreover, eight intermediate continents, satellite to the great continents — that is, beside each of the four great continents there are two intermediate continents.
Jambudvīpa's Vajrāsana is a striking detail: this text locates the literal, physical seat of every buddha's awakening at a single fixed point in its cosmology, grounded — quite literally — all the way down to the gold wheel itself, on the grounds that no other location in the entire universe has ground firm enough to bear a bodhisattva's vajra-like concentration. This is a good example of how this cosmology isn't purely decorative background: it is load-bearing for the tradition's central soteriological narrative, explaining in physical terms why awakening happens where it does.
The claim that each continent's inhabitants' faces mirror their continent's shape is a small, charming piece of correlative cosmology — cart-shaped faces in Jambudvīpa, half-moon faces in Pūrvavideha, round faces in Aparagodānīya, square faces in Uttarakuru — treating geography and physiognomy as expressions of the same underlying pattern rather than unrelated facts.
7. The Eight Intermediate Continents, and a Question of Who Lives There
Each of the four great continents has two smaller satellite continents beside it, eight in total, individually named. Most are said to be inhabited by ordinary human beings — but one further view holds that a single one of these eight is instead the exclusive domain of rākṣasas, flesh-eating demons.
贍部洲邊二中洲者,一遮末羅洲、二筏羅遮末羅洲。勝身洲邊二中洲者,一提訶洲、二毘提訶洲。牛貨洲邊二中洲者,一舍搋洲、二嗢怛羅漫怛里拏洲。俱盧洲邊二中洲者,一矩拉婆洲、二憍拉婆洲。此一切洲皆人所住。有說:唯一邏剎娑居。
The two intermediate continents beside Jambudvīpa are: first, Cāmara; second, Aparacāmara. The two intermediate continents beside Videha are: first, Deha; second, Videha. The two intermediate continents beside Godānīya are: first, Śāṭha; second, Uttaramantriṇa. The two intermediate continents beside Kuru are: first, Kurava; second, Kaurava. All of these continents are inhabited by human beings. There is a further view: that only one of these is inhabited, and solely by rākṣasas.
The eight names are given here in their standard Sanskrit reconstructions rather than as literal translations of Xuánzàng's phonetic transliterations, matching the treatment already given to the seven ring-mountains' names. The dissenting view that a single intermediate continent belongs exclusively to rākṣasas is stated without further elaboration or argument here — the text simply records the alternative and moves on, leaving open which of the eight this would be.
8. Lake Anavatapta, the Four Great Rivers, and How Jambudvīpa Got Its Name
North of Jambudvīpa's center lie three tiers of black mountains, then the Great Snow Mountain, then the Fragrant-Intoxicating Mountain — and nestled between the snow and the fragrance, Lake Anavatapta, the Lake Without Heat, an inaccessible fifty-yojana square of perfect water from which the four great rivers of the known world flow. Beside this lake grows the Jambu forest, whose sweet fruit gives the entire continent its name.
頌曰:此北九黑山,雪香醉山內,無熱池縱廣,五十踰繕那。論曰:此贍部洲從中向北,三處各有三重黑山。有大雪山在黑山北,大雪山北有香醉山。雪北香南有大池水,名無熱惱,出四大河:一殑伽河、二信度河、三徙多河、四縛芻河。無熱惱池縱廣正等,面各五十踰繕那量,八功德水盈滿其中,非得通人無由能至。於此池側有贍部林,樹形高大其果甘美,依此林故名贍部洲,或依此果以立洲號。
Verse: to the north of this are nine black mountains; within the snow and fragrant-intoxicating mountains lies the Lake Without Heat, its length and breadth each fifty yojanas. Prose: from the center of Jambudvīpa going north, there are three places, each with three layers of black mountains. Beyond these black mountains to the north lies the Great Snow Mountain; north of the Great Snow Mountain lies the Fragrant-Intoxicating Mountain. North of the snow and south of the fragrance lies a great lake, called Anavatapta, the Lake Without Heat, from which flow four great rivers: first, the Gaṅgā; second, the Sindhu; third, the Sītā; fourth, the Vakṣu. Lake Anavatapta's length and breadth are perfectly equal, each face measuring fifty yojanas, filled with water endowed with the eight excellent qualities — one who has not attained supernormal penetration has no way to reach it. Beside this lake there is a Jambu forest, its trees tall and great, their fruit sweet and delicious; it is on account of this forest that the continent is called Jambudvīpa, or, alternatively, it is on account of this fruit that the continent's name was established.
The four rivers named here — the Gaṅgā, Sindhu, Sītā, and Vakṣu — correspond to real, historically identifiable rivers of the Indian subcontinent and Central Asia (the Ganges and Indus among them), even as their common source at a lake "which one has not attained supernormal penetration has no way to reach" places that source definitively outside ordinary geography. This is a recurring pattern worth noticing in Buddhist cosmological literature: real, known rivers are given a shared mythic point of origin that is explicitly, deliberately inaccessible to ordinary travel, blending an inherited geographic reality with a cosmology that exceeds it.
The text offers two possible etymologies for "Jambudvīpa" without choosing between them — named for the forest itself, or for its fruit — and does not treat this as a problem requiring resolution, simply presenting both as live possibilities. This is a lighter, more casual kind of open-endedness than the fascicle 10's explicit debates over doctrine, but it fits the same general pattern of this text declining to manufacture false precision where the tradition itself preserves more than one account.
9. Avīci and the Seven Hells Stacked Above It
The treatise now turns to the hells beneath Jambudvīpa, beginning with Avīci at the very bottom — named "Uninterrupted" because its suffering never lets up, unlike the Reviving Hell just below the surface, where beings are literally revived by a cooling wind after every torture, only for it to begin again. The other six hells named already in fascicle 8's cosmology are stacked in between, worst to mildest, from Avīci up to Reviving.
復於何處置㮈落迦、大㮈落迦?何量有幾?頌曰:此下過二萬,無間深廣同,上七㮈落迦,八增皆十六。謂煻煨屍糞,鋒刃烈河增,各住彼四方,餘八寒地獄。論曰:此贍部洲下過二萬,有阿鼻旨大㮈落迦。深廣同前,謂各二萬故。彼底去此四萬踰繕那。以於其中受苦無間,非如餘七大㮈落迦受苦非恒,故名無間。且如等活㮈落迦中,諸有情身雖被種種斫刺磨擣,而彼暫遇涼風所吹還活如本,由斯理故立等活名。阿鼻旨中無如是事。有餘師說:阿鼻旨中無樂間苦故名無間,餘地獄中有樂間起,雖無異熟而有等流。七㮈落迦在無間上重累而住。其七者何?一者極熱、二者炎熱、三者大叫、四者號叫、五者眾合、六者黑繩、七者等活。有說:此七在無間傍。
Where, then, are the hells and the great hells located? What are their measurements, and how many are there? Verse: below this, past 20,000 yojanas, lies Avīci, equal in depth and breadth; above it are seven more hells. The eight hells each have sixteen surrounding torments — namely, the ember-pit, the corpse-mire, the blade, and the scalding-river torments, each situated on its own of the four sides. There are, besides, eight further cold hells. Prose: below this Jambudvīpa, past 20,000 yojanas, lies the great hell Avīci. Its depth and breadth are the same as stated before — that is, each 20,000. Its bottom lies 40,000 yojanas from here. Because suffering within it is uninterrupted — unlike the other seven great hells, where suffering is not constant — it is called "Uninterrupted." Consider, for instance, the Reviving Hell: although the sentient beings there have their bodies chopped, stabbed, ground, and pounded in various ways, they briefly encounter a cooling wind and are revived exactly as before — hence, by this logic, it is named "Reviving." In Avīci, no such thing occurs. There is a further view: in Avīci, there is no pleasure interspersed with suffering, hence it is called "Uninterrupted"; in the other hells, pleasure does arise interspersed with suffering — though not as a karmic ripening, it does occur as a karmic outflow. The seven other hells are stacked, layer upon layer, above Avīci. What are these seven? First, Great Scorching; second, Scorching; third, Great Wailing; fourth, Wailing; fifth, Crushing-Together; sixth, Black-Rope; seventh, Reviving. There is a further view: that these seven lie beside Avīci, not stacked directly above it.
The seven hells above Avīci are named here in the same English forms already established in fascicle 8's opening cosmology (Reviving / Black-Rope / Crushing-Together / Wailing / Great Wailing / Scorching / Great Scorching), kept consistent with that earlier list rather than retranslated fresh. Ordered from the passage's "first" to "seventh," they run from most severe (Great Scorching, nearest Avīci) to least severe (Reviving, nearest the surface) — the reverse of how a reader encountering them for the first time might expect a "first, second, third..." list to run.
The explanation of why Avīci alone is "uninterrupted" is doing careful conceptual work: it isn't simply the hottest or most painful hell in some vague intensifying sense, but specifically the one hell where suffering has no gaps at all — not even the brief, cyclical relief-and-renewal that defines the Reviving Hell just one level up. The second view offered — that even the other hells have some interspersed pleasure, "not as karmic ripening but as karmic outflow" — draws a fine technical distinction between pleasure that is itself a direct fruit of past wholesome karma, versus pleasure that merely continues an existing habitual pattern (等流, niṣyanda) without constituting a fresh karmic reward, worth flagging since the distinction is stated but not elaborated further here.
10. The Buddha's Verse on the Eight Hells, and the First Two Surrounding Torments
The Buddha himself is cited describing the eight hot hells' iron ground, iron walls, and iron-sealed gates, each hell surrounded by sixteen additional torments beyond its main suffering. The treatise begins working through these sixteen one by one, starting with the knee-deep ember pit, whose burns heal instantly only to be inflicted again with every step, and the corpse-mire, where needle-sharp worms bore through skin and bone to devour the marrow within.
有說:此七在無間傍。八㮈落迦增各十六,故薄伽梵說此頌言:此八㮈落迦,我說甚難越,以熱鐵為地,周匝有鐵牆,四面有四門,關閉以鐵扇,巧安布分量,各有十六增,多百踰繕那,滿中造惡者,周遍焰交徹,猛火恒洞然。十六增者,八㮈落迦四面門外各有四所:一煻煨增,謂此增內煻煨沒膝,有情遊彼纔下足時,皮肉與血俱燋爛墜,舉足還生平復如本。二屍糞增,謂此增內屍糞泥滿,於中多有娘矩吒蟲,利如針身白頭黑,有情遊彼皆為此蟲鑽皮破骨咂食其髓。
There is a further view: that these seven lie beside Avīci. The eight hells each have sixteen surrounding torments; hence the Bhagavān spoke this verse: "These eight hells, I declare, are exceedingly difficult to escape — their ground is made of heated iron, surrounded on all sides by iron walls; on the four sides are four gates, sealed shut with iron doors; skillfully arranged and measured out, each has sixteen surrounding torments, extending over many hundreds of yojanas, filled with evildoers, pervaded through and through by intermingling flames, where a fierce fire perpetually blazes." As for the sixteen surrounding torments: outside the four gates on the four sides of each of the eight hells, there are four such places. First, the ember-pit torment: within this torment, embers bury one to the knees; the moment a being walks there and sets foot down, the skin, flesh, and blood all scorch, decay, and fall away — yet the moment the foot is lifted, it is restored exactly as before. Second, the corpse-mire torment: within this torment, corpses and filth fill the mire, in which there are many nyaṅku worms, sharp as needles, white-bodied with black heads; beings who walk there are all bored through the skin, their bones broken, by these worms, which suck and devour their marrow.
The instant-healing detail attached to the ember pit — flesh burns away with each step, then is "restored exactly as before" the moment the foot lifts — is a recurring structural feature of these hell-torments worth naming explicitly: injury without any cumulative damage, so that the same maximal suffering can be inflicted again and again without end, rather than mounting toward death or numbness. This is the same underlying logic already seen in Avīci's definition as "uninterrupted": these torments are engineered, in the text's own cosmology, specifically to prevent suffering from ever tapering off through injury, exhaustion, or death.
11. The Blade Torment and the Scalding River, Completing the Sixteen
The third surrounding torment is itself threefold — a road paved with upturned blades, a forest whose leaves are sword-blades that fall on the wind, and a forest of iron thorns patrolled by iron-beaked birds — grouped as one torment since all three share iron as their common instrument. The fourth and final torment is a river of scalding, salty water where beings are boiled like grain in a cauldron, with hell-guardians on both banks blocking any escape. With this, all sixteen surrounding torments — four per side, on all four sides of each of the eight hells — are accounted for.
三鋒刃增,謂此增內復有三種:一刀刃路,謂於此中仰布刀刃以為大道,有情遊彼纔下足時,皮肉與血俱斷碎墜,舉足還生平復如本。二劍葉林,謂此林上純以銛利劍刃為葉,有情遊彼風吹葉墜,斬刺支體骨肉零落,有烏駁狗摣掣食之。三鐵刺林,謂此林上有利鐵刺長十六指,有情被逼上下樹時,其刺銛鋒下上鑱刺,有鐵觜鳥探啄有情眼睛心肝爭競而食。刀刃路等三種雖殊,而鐵杖同故一增攝。四烈河增,謂此增量廣,滿中熱醎水,有情入中或浮或沒,或逆或順或橫或轉,被蒸被煮骨肉糜爛。如大鑊中滿盛灰汁置麻米等,猛火下燃,麻等於中上下迴轉舉體糜爛,有情亦然。設欲逃亡,於兩岸上有諸獄卒,手執刀槍禦捍令迴,無由得出。此河如塹,前三似園,四面各四增,故言皆十六。此是增上被刑害所,故說名增,本地獄中適被害已重遭害故。有說:有情從地獄出更遭此苦,故說為增。
Third, the blade torment: within this torment there are, further, three kinds. First, the blade-road: within this, upturned blades are laid out to form a great road; the moment a being walks there and sets foot down, the skin, flesh, and blood are all severed, shredded, and fall away — yet the moment the foot is lifted, it is restored exactly as before. Second, the sword-leaf forest: in this forest, sharp sword-blades alone serve as leaves; as beings walk there, the wind blows and the leaves fall, slashing and piercing their limbs until flesh and bone scatter, whereupon black-and-white dogs seize and devour them. Third, the iron-thorn forest: in this forest there are sharp iron thorns, sixteen finger-widths long; when beings are forced to climb up and down the trees, these sharp-pointed thorns pierce them from below and above, and iron-beaked birds probe and peck at the beings' eyes, competing to devour their hearts and livers. Although the blade-road and the other two kinds differ, since they share the common feature of iron implements, they are subsumed together as a single torment. Fourth, the scalding-river torment: this torment is vast in extent, filled entirely with hot, salty water; beings who enter it either float or sink, move against or with the current, drift sideways or spin around, steamed and boiled until their flesh and bones turn to mush. It is just as when a great cauldron, filled with lye-water, has hemp and rice grains placed within it, and a fierce fire burns beneath — the hemp and the rest churn up and down within, their whole substance turning to mush; so too it is with these beings. Should they wish to flee, hell-guardians stand on both banks, wielding blades and spears to block and drive them back, leaving no way to escape. This river is like a moat; the preceding three torments resemble a garden surrounding the hell; on each of the four sides there are four such torments, hence it is said there are sixteen in all. These are called "surrounding" torments because they are places of additional punishment and harm — within the main hell, one has only just suffered harm, and here suffers harm yet again. There is a further view: that beings, upon emerging from the hell itself, encounter this further suffering, and it is for this reason called a "surrounding increment."
The text's own geometric image — the scalding river as a moat, the three blade-torments as a garden ring around each hell, repeated on all four sides — gives the whole sixteen-torment structure a strangely architectural coherence: this is being described as a designed, symmetrical building, not a chaotic pit. The two competing explanations for why these are called "surrounding" torments at all (additional punishment layered onto the same beings, versus a further punishment awaiting beings as they attempt to leave) are given without the text picking one, consistent with this fascicle's general pattern of recording live alternatives rather than manufacturing forced consensus.
12. Are the Hell-Guardians Real Sentient Beings?
Describing the hells' tortures raises an unavoidable question: the beings who wield the blades and spears, who drive the tormented back from the riverbanks — are they themselves real sentient beings, undergoing their own karmic punishment, or something else? The treatise records both positions, each defending itself against the other's strongest objection.
今於此中因論生論。諸地獄卒是有情不?有說:非情。如何動作?有情業力,如成劫風。若爾,云何通彼大德法善現說?如彼頌言:心常懷忿毒,好集諸惡業,見他苦欣悅,死作琰魔卒。琰魔王使諸邏剎娑擲諸有情置地獄者名琰魔卒。是實有情非地獄中害有情者,故地獄卒非實有情。有說:有情。若爾,此惡業何處受異熟?即地獄中,以地獄中尚容無間所感異熟,此何理遮?若爾,何緣火不燒彼?此定由業力所隔礙故,或感異大種故不被燒。
Now, on this occasion, a further discussion arises out of the foregoing discussion. Are the hell-guardians themselves sentient beings, or not? There is a view: they are not sentient beings. How, then, do they move and act? Through the power of sentient beings' collective karma — just as the wind that forms the eon. If this is so, then how is this to be reconciled with what the Venerable Elder Dharmasubhūti stated? As his verse says: "One whose mind constantly harbors resentment and malice, who delights in accumulating various evil deeds, who rejoices at seeing others suffer — at death, becomes a servant of Yama." It is only those whom King Yama employs — rākṣasas who fling sentient beings into hell — who are called "servants of Yama"; these are indeed real sentient beings, but they are not the ones who inflict harm within the hells themselves. Hence the hell-guardians within the hells are not real sentient beings. There is a further view: they are sentient beings. If this is so, then where does the evil karma that produced them receive its ripened result? Precisely within the hell itself — since even Avīci is capable of accommodating the karmic ripening it produces, what principle would forbid this? If this is so, then why does the fire not burn them? This is certainly because they are shielded by the power of their own karma, or else because they have acquired great elements of a different kind, and are therefore not burned.
Both sides of this debate are answering the same underlying worry from opposite directions: if hell-guardians are not sentient beings, what makes them move at all without a mind of their own — answered by analogy by the cosmos-forming wind, itself a collective karmic effect that acts without being a sentient agent. If they are sentient beings, why aren't they burned by the very fire that tortures everyone else in the same hell — answered by their own protective karma or a fire-resistant physical composition. Neither answer is presented as obviously superior; the Dharmasubhūti citation is deployed specifically to explain away what looks like clear scriptural evidence for the "real being" side (a verse describing cruel people becoming Yama's servants after death), by narrowing "servant of Yama" to a specific class of rākṣasa enforcers distinct from the anonymous guardians inside the hells themselves. This is a good example of how a single citation can be reinterpreted to serve either side of a live doctrinal dispute, depending on exactly how its terms are drawn.
13. The Eight Cold Hells, and How Jambudvīpa Contains Them All
Beside the eight hot hells, eight cold hells lie beneath Jambudvīpa too, each named after the very sound its freezing inhabitants cry out. This raises an obvious puzzle: Jambudvīpa is not a large continent — how could it possibly contain Avīci and all the rest beneath its surface? The treatise's answer reshapes the continent itself: not flat, but shaped like a heap of grain, narrow at the top and flaring wide beneath, exactly the way the ocean surrounding it grows deeper as it spreads outward.
熱㮈落迦已說有八。復有餘八寒㮈落迦。其八者何?一頞部陀、二尼剌部陀、三頞唽吒、四臛臛婆、五虎虎婆、六嗢鉢羅、七鉢特摩、八摩訶鉢特摩。此中有情嚴寒所逼,隨身聲變以立其名。此八并居贍部洲下,如前所說大地獄傍。此贍部洲其量無幾,下寧容受無間等耶?洲如穀聚,上尖下闊,是故大海漸陿漸深。
The hot hells have thus been described as eight in number. There are, besides, eight further cold hells. What are these eight? First, Arbuda; second, Nirarbuda; third, Aṭaṭa; fourth, Hahava; fifth, Huhuva; sixth, Utpala; seventh, Padma; eighth, Mahāpadma. In these, sentient beings, pressed by severe cold, have their names established according to the sounds their bodies make. These eight are likewise situated beneath Jambudvīpa, alongside the great hells already described above. But Jambudvīpa's own extent is not very great — how, then, could it possibly accommodate Avīci and the rest underneath it? The continent is like a heap of grain, pointed at the top and broad at the bottom; this is likewise why the great ocean grows gradually narrower and deeper as it descends.
The eight cold hells' names are onomatopoeic in the original Sanskrit, each one imitating the sound a freezing body is forced to make — a detail preserved here by keeping the names as Sanskrit transliterations rather than translating them into English words, since any English rendering would lose exactly the feature the text itself is pointing to. The later names (Utpala, Padma, Mahāpadma — "blue lotus," "lotus," "great lotus") describe the body cracking open into lotus-like patterns under extreme cold, layering visual imagery onto the auditory naming convention of the first several.
The "heap of grain" solution to Jambudvīpa's apparent size problem is elegant because it resolves the puzzle without requiring any of the previously stated surface measurements to be wrong: the continent's surface footprint stays exactly as small as already described, while its underlying mass — like a grain-pile's base being far wider than its visible peak — extends far enough outward and downward to easily contain hells tens of thousands of yojanas across. This is the same explanatory move already used for why the ocean grows deeper as it spreads: surface appearance and total extent are simply different things.
14. Solitary Hells, and Where Animals and Ghosts Actually Live
Beyond the sixteen great hells shared by collective karma, countless "solitary hells" exist too, each invited by an individual being's own private karma, scattered without any fixed pattern — near rivers, mountains, wilderness, underground, or in open space, housing anywhere from a single being to many. The treatise then locates the animal realm's base in the great ocean and the ghost realm's base in King Yama's kingdom, directly beneath Jambudvīpa, from which both have since spread elsewhere.
如上所論十六地獄,一切有情增上業感。餘孤地獄各別業招,或多或二或一所止,差別多種、處所不定,或近江河山邊曠野,或在地下空及餘處。諸地獄器安布如是,本處在下、支[泳-永+(瓜-、)]不定。傍生住處謂水陸空,本處大海,後流餘處。諸鬼本處琰魔王國,於此贍部洲下過五百踰繕那有琰魔王國,縱廣量亦爾,從此展轉散居餘處。或有端嚴具大威德,受諸富樂自在如天,或有飢羸顏貌醜陋,如是等類廣說如經。
As discussed above, the sixteen hells are brought about by the dominant karma of sentient beings collectively. The remaining solitary hells are each individually invited by separate karma, some housing many beings, some two, some only one; they differ greatly in kind, and their locations are not fixed — some are near rivers, mountains, or open wilderness, some are underground, in open space, or in other locations. The various hell-realms are arranged in this way: their fundamental location is below, though their branches and offshoots are not fixed. As for the animal realm's dwelling places — water, land, and air — its fundamental location is the great ocean, from which it has subsequently spread to other places. As for ghosts, their fundamental location is King Yama's kingdom; 500 yojanas beneath this Jambudvīpa lies King Yama's kingdom, equal in length and breadth to Jambudvīpa itself, from which they have, in turn, scattered to dwell in other places. Some are dignified and possessed of great majestic power, enjoying wealth and pleasure, free and unrestrained like the gods; others are starving and emaciated, their faces ugly — such various kinds are described at length, as in the sūtras.
The solitary hells' explicit lack of fixed location or population is a deliberate contrast with everything else in this fascicle so far: after page upon page of precise measurements — exact depths, exact widths, exact numbers of surrounding torments — the text suddenly admits a whole category of suffering that resists this kind of cartography entirely, arising wherever an individual's own karma happens to call it into being. This matters for how the whole cosmology should be read: the elaborate shared architecture (Sumeru, the eight great hells, the four continents) is the stable, common structure every being's karma has to work within, but it doesn't exhaust the actual variety of karmic consequence, which can still manifest in genuinely unpredictable, individual ways alongside it.
The ghost realm's range — from beings "dignified and possessed of great majestic power, enjoying wealth and pleasure... like the gods" down to "starving and emaciated, ugly-faced" — is a useful corrective to a common oversimplification of this realm as uniformly wretched: like the human and animal realms, it spans a real range of karmic fortune, not a single undifferentiated state of deprivation.
15. The Sun and Moon: Held Aloft by Wind, Made of Crystal Fire and Water
The treatise turns skyward: the sun, moon, and stars rest on nothing solid at all, but on a karmically-generated wind circling Mount Sumeru that keeps them perpetually aloft. The sun and moon are almost identical in size, but built from opposite substances — crystal fire-gems beneath the sun, crystal water-gems beneath the moon — which is why one heats and illuminates while the other cools and illuminates.
日月所居量等義者,頌曰:日月迷盧半,五十一五十,夜半日沒中,日出四洲等。雨際第二月,後九夜漸增,寒第四亦然,夜減晝翻此。晝夜增臘縛,行南北路時,近日自影覆,故見月輪缺。論曰:日月眾星依何而住?依風而住。謂諸有情業增上力共引風起,繞妙高山空中旋環,運持日等令不停墜。彼所住去此幾踰繕那?持雙山頂齊妙高山半。日月徑量幾踰繕那?日五十一,月唯五十。星最小者唯一俱盧舍,其最大者十六踰繕那。日輪下面頗胝迦寶火珠所成,能熱能照;月輪下面頗胝迦寶水珠所成,能冷能照。隨有情業增上所生,能於眼身果花稼穡藥草等物,如其所應為益為損。
As for the matter of where the sun and moon dwell, and their measurements: Verse: the sun and moon are level with Sumeru's midpoint; their diameters are fifty-one and fifty; when it is midnight in one place, the sun is setting in another; noon and sunrise are likewise so across the four continents. From the second month of the rainy season, for nine half-months afterward, the night gradually lengthens; from the fourth month of the cold season, likewise; when night decreases, day does the reverse. Prose: on what do the sun, moon, and the many stars rest? They rest upon wind. That is, through the dominant power of sentient beings' collective karma, a wind is jointly drawn forth, circling around Mount Sumeru through the sky, carrying the sun and the rest so that they never stop or fall. How many yojanas away from here do they dwell? Level with half of Sumeru's height, at the same elevation as the summit of Yugandhara. What are the diameters of the sun and moon, in yojanas? The sun is fifty-one; the moon is only fifty. The smallest stars are only one krośa across; the largest are sixteen yojanas. The sun disk's underside is composed of crystal fire-gems, capable of both heating and illuminating; the moon disk's underside is composed of crystal water-gems, capable of both cooling and illuminating. In accordance with what is generated by the dominant power of sentient beings' karma, these bodies are able, as is appropriate, to either benefit or harm the eyes, the body, fruit, flowers, crops, medicinal herbs, and the like.
Resting the sun and moon on wind rather than any fixed structure continues this fascicle's consistent method: every major component of the cosmos, however solid or permanent it appears, ultimately turns out to be sustained dynamically by collective karma rather than resting on inert, self-subsisting matter — wind held the water wheel's shape, wind congealed the gold wheel, and now wind is what keeps the sun and moon from simply falling.
16. One Sun, Four Continents: Simultaneous Midnight, Noon, Sunset, and Sunrise
A single sun and moon serve all four continents, but not by reaching each one at the same moment in the same way — rather, the four continents each experience a different moment of the sun's cycle simultaneously: midnight in the north lines up with sunset in the east, noon in the south, and sunrise in the west. The sun's shifting path across Jambudvīpa itself is also what causes day and night to lengthen and shorten through the seasons.
唯一日月普於四洲作所作事、一日所作事為四洲同時不?不爾。云何?北洲夜半東洲日沒,南洲日中西洲日出。此四時等,餘例應知。日行此洲路有差別,故令晝夜有減有增。從雨際第二月後半第九日夜漸增,從寒際第四月後半第九日夜漸減,晝增減位與此相違。夜漸增時晝便漸減,夜若漸減晝則漸增。晝夜增時一晝夜增幾?增一臘縛。晝夜減亦然。日行此洲向南向北,如其次第夜增晝增。
There is only a single sun and moon, yet they universally accomplish their function for all four continents — does a single sun accomplish its function for all four continents simultaneously? No. How, then? When it is midnight in the northern continent, the sun is setting in the eastern continent; it is noon in the southern continent, and the sun is rising in the western continent. These four moments are simultaneous with one another; the remaining cases should be understood by analogy. The sun's path across this continent has variations, and this is what causes day and night to lengthen and shorten. Beginning from the ninth day of the second half of the second month of the rainy season, night gradually lengthens; beginning from the ninth day of the second half of the fourth month of the cold season, night gradually shortens; the lengthening and shortening of day runs in the opposite direction to this. When night is gradually lengthening, day correspondingly shortens; when night gradually shortens, day correspondingly lengthens. When day and night lengthen, by how much does a full day-and-night lengthen? It lengthens by one lava. When day and night shorten, the same applies. As the sun travels across this continent southward or northward, night lengthens or day lengthens, respectively, in that same order.
This is a genuinely careful piece of applied astronomy within the mythic framework: rather than simply asserting that one sun magically serves four continents, the text works out a coherent, internally consistent model where the four continents' four different simultaneous experiences (midnight/sunset/noon/sunrise) are treated as necessary correlates of the sun's single circuit around Sumeru, the same way a real sun's single position produces different local times around a real sphere.
17. Why the Moon Waxes and Wanes, and Who Lives in the Sky Palaces
Two rival explanations account for the moon's changing phases: one holds that the moon's palace draws near the sun's light and casts its own shadow over itself; an older explanation simply attributes it to the sun and moon traveling at different speeds. The sun and moon palaces are inhabited by gods under the Four Great Heavenly Kings — the "sky-dwelling" gods, as distinct from the "earth-dwelling" gods who live on Sumeru's own terraces.

Why does the moon's disk appear to wane during the end of the dark half of the lunar month and the beginning of the bright half? The Prajñaptiśāstra offers this explanation: because the moon's palace, in its course, draws near to the sun's disk, the moon is encroached upon and illuminated by the sun disk's light, and a shadow is cast on its far side, covering the moon's own disk, causing it to appear less than full at that time. The old masters explain it differently: because the sun's and moon's disks travel at different rates, the moon appears now full and now waning. What sort of beings inhabit the sun and other such palaces? The multitude of gods under the jurisdiction of the Four Great Heavenly Kings. Do these gods dwell only here? Sky-dwelling gods dwell only in palaces such as the sun and the rest; earth-dwelling gods dwell on the various terraces of Mount Sumeru, and so forth.
The two explanations for lunar phases are attributed to different sources — a named scholastic text (the Prajñaptiśāstra, "the world's own designations") versus unnamed "old masters" — and neither is endorsed over the other, continuing this fascicle's consistent pattern of presenting live alternatives without manufacturing false consensus, even on a question this text plainly considers well within its explanatory reach. The sky-dwelling/earth-dwelling distinction just introduced for the gods will structure everything that follows about the heavens: some divine beings live in freestanding, moving palaces like the sun and moon, others live fixed to Sumeru's physical terraces.
18. Sumeru's Four Terraces and the Heaven of the Four Great Kings
Sumeru's lower half is ringed by four terraces, each projecting outward a little less than the one below it, home to three yaksha hosts and, on the fourth and topmost terrace, the Four Great Heavenly Kings themselves — giving this heaven its name. The same Four Kings' subordinate gods also inhabit the seven gold mountains surrounding Sumeru, making this the most extensive of all the desire realm's heavens.
有幾層級?其量云何?何等諸天住何層級?頌曰:妙高層有四,相去各十千,傍出十六千,八四二千量。堅手及持鬘,恒憍大王眾,如次居四級,亦住餘七山。論曰:蘇迷盧山有四層級,始從水際盡第一層相去十千踰繕那量,如是乃至從第三層盡第四層亦十千量。此四層級從妙高山傍出圍繞盡其下半,最初層級出十六千,第二、第三、第四層級,如其次第八、四、二千。有藥叉神名為堅手住初層級,有名持鬘住第二級,有名恒憍住第三級,此三皆是四大天王所部天眾,第四層級四大天王及諸眷屬共所居止故,經依此說四大王眾天。如妙高山四外層級四大王眾及眷屬居,如是持雙、持軸山等七金山上亦有天居,是四大王所部封邑,是名依地住四大王眾天。於欲天中此天最廣。
How many terraces are there? What are their measurements? Which gods dwell on which terrace? Verse: Sumeru's terraces number four, each spaced ten thousand yojanas apart; they project outward sixteen thousand, eight thousand, four thousand, and two thousand. Karoṭapāṇi, Mālādhāra, and the Ever-Intoxicated hosts, in that order, dwell on the four terraces; gods also dwell on the other seven mountains. Prose: Mount Sumeru has four terraces. Starting from the water's edge up to the first terrace, the distance is ten thousand yojanas; likewise, from the third terrace up to the fourth terrace, it is also ten thousand. These four terraces project outward from Sumeru's flank, encircling it, occupying its lower half; the first terrace projects out sixteen thousand yojanas, while the second, third, and fourth terraces project, in order, eight thousand, four thousand, and two thousand. There is a yaksha spirit named Karoṭapāṇi who dwells on the first terrace; one named Mālādhāra who dwells on the second terrace; one named Sadāmada who dwells on the third terrace. These three are all hosts of gods under the jurisdiction of the Four Great Heavenly Kings. The fourth terrace is where the Four Great Heavenly Kings themselves, along with their retinues, dwell together; hence the sūtras, on this basis, speak of the "Heaven of the Four Great Kings." Just as the four outer terraces of Mount Sumeru are inhabited by the Four Great Kings' hosts and retinues, so too, upon the seven gold mountains — Yugandhara and the rest — gods likewise dwell, these being fiefs under the Four Great Kings' jurisdiction; this is what is called the earth-dwelling Heaven of the Four Great Kings. Among the desire-realm heavens, this heaven is the most extensive.
The political vocabulary here is deliberate and consistent: the seven gold mountains' gods are explicitly called the Four Kings' "fiefs" (封邑), and the whole arrangement — subordinate hosts on the lower terraces, the sovereigns themselves on the highest terrace, with an entire mountain range beyond serving as outlying territory — describes a feudal hierarchy mapped directly onto physical elevation. This heaven's name in later Buddhist tradition ("Heaven of the Four Great Kings") is shown here to derive quite literally from this being the level where the Four Kings themselves, specifically, are said to reside.
19. The Heaven of the Thirty-Three: Sudarśana City and Śakra's Palace
At Sumeru's very summit, guarded by Vajrapāṇi at its four corners, dwells the Heaven of the Thirty-Three, centered on Sudarśana, a golden city with ground so soft it yields beneath every footstep — the capital of Śakra, Lord of the Gods, containing within it the Vaijayanta Palace, more resplendent than any other divine dwelling in the heaven.
三十三天住在何處?頌曰:妙高頂八萬,三十三天居,四角有四峯,金剛手所住。中宮名善見,周萬踰繕那,高一半金城,雜飾地柔軟。中有殊勝殿,周千踰繕那,外四苑莊嚴,眾車麁雜喜。妙池居四方,相去各二十,東北圓生樹,西南善法堂。論曰:三十三天住迷盧頂,其頂四面各八十千,與下四邊其量無別。有餘師說:周八十千,別說四邊各唯二萬。山頂四角各有一峯,其高廣量各有五百。有藥叉神名金剛手,於中止住守護諸天。於山頂中有宮名善見,面二千半,周萬踰繕那,金城量高一踰繕那半,其地平坦亦真金所成,俱用百一雜寶嚴飾,地觸柔軟如妬羅綿,於踐躡時隨足高下,是天帝釋所都大城。於其城中有殊勝殿,種種妙寶具足莊嚴,蔽餘天宮故名殊勝,面二百五十,周千踰繕那。是謂城中諸可愛事。
Where does the Heaven of the Thirty-Three dwell? Verse: at Sumeru's summit, eighty thousand yojanas wide, dwells the Heaven of the Thirty-Three; at its four corners are four peaks, where Vajrapāṇi dwells. In the center is the city called Sudarśana, with a circumference of ten thousand yojanas, its golden walls one and a half yojanas high, its ground adorned with various colors and soft to the touch. Within is the Vaijayanta Palace, with a circumference of a thousand yojanas. Prose: the Heaven of the Thirty-Three dwells at Sumeru's summit, whose four sides each measure eighty thousand yojanas — no different in measure from the four sides below. There is a further view: that the circumference is eighty thousand, while the four sides are separately said to be only twenty thousand each. At the summit's four corners there is, at each, a single peak, its height and breadth each measuring five hundred. There is a yaksha spirit named Vajrapāṇi who dwells there, guarding the gods. At the center of the summit there is a city called Sudarśana, its face two thousand five hundred yojanas, its circumference ten thousand yojanas; its golden walls measure one and a half yojanas in height; its ground is level, likewise made of true gold, adorned throughout with one hundred and one kinds of mixed jewels, its surface soft to the touch like kācilindika cotton, yielding beneath the foot with every step — this is the great city that is Śakra, Lord of the Gods', capital. Within this city there is the Vaijayanta Palace, fully adorned with every kind of wondrous jewel, surpassing all other divine palaces — hence its name, "Surpassing" — its face two hundred fifty yojanas, its circumference a thousand yojanas. These are the delightful features found within the city.
The ground that "yields beneath the foot with every step, soft as kācilindika cotton" is a small, tactile detail amid all this fascicle's exact measurements — a rare moment where the text describes not a size or distance but a bodily sensation, inviting the reader to imagine walking on Sudarśana's streets rather than simply calculating their extent. The two competing readings of the summit's measurements (eighty thousand on all four sides, versus an eighty-thousand circumference with twenty-thousand sides) are left unresolved, in keeping with this fascicle's now-familiar habit of recording rather than adjudicating between rival numerical traditions.
20. Four Pleasure Parks, and the Pārijāta Tree's Impossible Fragrance
Four parks ring Sudarśana on its outside, each with its own pond twenty yojanas further out, where the gods gather to compete in play. To the northeast stands the Pārijāta tree, a hundred yojanas tall and wide, whose blossoms give off a fragrance that carries a full hundred yojanas downwind — and, strikingly, still reaches fifty yojanas even against the wind.
城外四面四苑莊嚴,是彼諸天共遊戲處:一眾車苑、二麁惡苑、三雜林苑、四喜林苑,此為外飾莊嚴大城。四苑四邊有四妙池,中間各去苑二十踰繕那,是彼諸天勝遊戲處,諸天於彼捔勝歡娛。城外東北有圓生樹,是三十三天受欲樂勝所。盤根深廣五十踰繕那,聳幹上昇枝條傍布,高廣量等百踰繕那,挺葉開花妙香芬馥,順風熏滿百踰繕那,若逆風時猶遍五十。
Outside the city, on its four sides, are four adorning parks, where these gods together disport themselves in play: first, the Park of Various Chariots; second, the Park of Coarse Things; third, the Mixed-Forest Park; fourth, the Park of Joyous Groves — these serve as the outer adornment of the great city. At the four sides of the four parks are four wondrous ponds, each twenty yojanas distant from its park; these are the gods' foremost places of play, where the gods compete and take delight together. Outside the city, to the northeast, is the Pārijāta tree, the foremost place where the Thirty-Three enjoy the pleasures of desire. Its coiled roots extend fifty yojanas in depth and breadth; its trunk rises upward, its branches spreading out to the sides, its height and breadth each measuring a hundred yojanas; its unfurled leaves and blossoming flowers give off a wondrous, fragrant scent — with the wind, this fragrance permeates a full hundred yojanas; against the wind, it still reaches fifty.
The Pārijāta's fragrance traveling fifty yojanas against the wind is stated here as a plain fact, without comment — but it is exactly the kind of claim that invites the objection an ordinary reader would raise (how can scent travel against the very air current that would carry it away?), and the treatise takes this seriously enough to devote real argument to it in what follows, rather than letting the marvel simply stand as poetic exaggeration.
21. Can Fragrance Really Travel Against the Wind?
The Pārijāta's ability to perfume the air even against the wind gets a serious hearing: one view denies the phenomenon outright, redefining "against the wind" as merely staying within the tree's own radius; the treatise's own position affirms it as genuine, just weaker and shorter-ranged than downwind fragrance. A citation from the Buddha himself, contrasting flower-scent with the fragrance of virtue, is read as describing merely human flowers rather than denying the Pārijāta's own exceptional case.
順風可爾,云何逆熏?有餘師言:香無逆熏義,依不越樹界故說逆熏。理實圓生有如是德,所流香氣能逆風熏,雖天和風力所擁遏。然能相續流趣餘方,漸劣漸微近處便歇,非能遠至如順風熏。如是花香,為依自地隨風相續轉至餘方、為但熏風別生香氣?此義無定,諸軌範師於此二門俱許無失。若爾,何故薄伽梵言:花香不能逆風熏,根莖等香亦復爾;善士功德香芬馥,逆風流美遍諸方。據人間香故作是說,以世共了無如是能。化地部經說此香氣,順風熏滿百踰繕那,若無風時唯遍五十。
With the wind, this is understandable — but how can it be carried against the wind? There is a further view: fragrance has, properly speaking, no capacity to be carried against the wind at all; what is called "against the wind" here simply means that it does not go beyond the tree's own boundary. In truth, however, the Pārijāta genuinely possesses this quality: the fragrance it emits is able to be carried even against the wind, although it is still held back and impeded by the force of the gods' gentle breeze. Nevertheless, it is able to continue flowing onward to other places, growing gradually weaker and fainter until, near its limit, it ceases entirely — unable to reach as far as it does when carried with the wind. As for flowers' fragrance of this kind: does it depend on its own substrate, continuing to be carried by the wind onward to other places, or does it merely infuse the wind itself, which then separately generates a scent of its own? This question has no fixed answer; the various master-teachers all permit both approaches here without fault. If this is so, then why does the Bhagavān say: "The fragrance of flowers cannot be carried against the wind; the fragrance of roots and stems is likewise so; but the fragrance of the good person's virtue is fragrant indeed — carried against the wind, it flows sweetly to every direction"? This is said with reference to fragrance in the human world, since it is commonly known and understood that no such capacity exists for ordinary flowers. The Mahīśāsaka school's sūtra states that this fragrance, with the wind, permeates a full hundred yojanas; when there is no wind at all, it still reaches fifty.
The reconciliation with the Buddha's own verse is a clean piece of scope-narrowing: rather than treating the Pārijāta's against-the-wind fragrance as contradicting a categorical claim that "flower fragrance cannot travel against the wind," the treatise reads the Buddha's statement as implicitly restricted to human-world flowers, which is what "it is commonly known that no such capacity exists" is doing — restricting the domain of a canonical statement rather than rejecting either the statement or the exceptional cosmological case. The unresolved mechanical question (does the scent itself travel, or does it merely infuse the wind which then carries its own derivative scent?) is a genuinely subtle point about action-at-a-distance that the text explicitly declines to settle, again preferring honesty about live disagreement among "master-teachers" to manufactured consensus.
22. The Sudharmā Hall, and Twenty-Two Heavens Resting on Nothing at All
The Sudharmā Hall, where the Thirty-Three deliberate right from wrong, completes the description of Sumeru's summit. Above it, an entirely different kind of dwelling begins: the four remaining desire-realm heavens and the sixteen form-realm heavens rest not on any mountain or terrace, but on freestanding palaces floating in empty space — twenty-two heavens in total, still counted as depending on "the external container world," but no longer touching it at all.
外西南角有善法堂,三十三天時集於彼詳論如法不如法事。如是已辯三十三天所居外器,餘有色天眾所住器云何?頌曰:此上有色天,住依空宮殿。論曰:此前所說三十三天上有色諸天,住依空宮殿。云何名上有色諸天?謂夜摩天、覩史多天、樂變化天、他化自在天。及前所說梵眾天等有十六處,并前合有二十二天,皆依外器。
Outside the city, at its southwest corner, is the Sudharmā Hall, where the Thirty-Three periodically gather to deliberate in detail on matters of what accords with the Dharma and what does not. The container-world dwelling of the Thirty-Three has thus been explained — what, then, is the container-world dwelling of the remaining form-possessing gods? Verse: above this, the form-possessing gods dwell resting upon palaces suspended in empty space. Prose: the form-possessing gods above the Thirty-Three just described dwell resting upon palaces suspended in empty space. Which gods are called the "form-possessing gods above"? Namely, the Yāma Heaven, the Tuṣita Heaven, the Heaven of Enjoying Transformations, and the Heaven of Mastery over Others' Transformations. Together with the sixteen places of the Heaven of Brahmā's Retinue and the rest already discussed earlier, combined with those already mentioned, there are twenty-two heavens in total, all of which depend upon the external container-world.
"Form-possessing" here means simply "embodied" — having a physical body at all — grouping the remaining four desire-realm heavens together with all sixteen form-realm heavens against the backdrop of the formless realm still to come, rather than referring narrowly to the rupa-dhātu alone. The count of twenty-two folds together the two earth-dwelling heavens already covered (the Four Kings and the Thirty-Three), the four newly introduced sky-dwelling desire heavens, and the sixteen form-realm heavens already catalogued back in fascicle 8 — a running tally that quietly demonstrates how carefully this cosmology's bookkeeping holds together across fascicles.
23. Six Desire Heavens, Six Ways of Union
Only the six desire-realm heavens experience desire's objects at all, and each accomplishes sexual union differently — full intercourse for the two earth-dwelling heavens, dwindling through mere embrace, hand-holding, and mutual smiling, down to a single glance for the highest. The Vaibhāṣikas offer a countervailing reading: all six may actually involve physical union, with the embrace-and-glance descriptions merely indicating how briefly that union lasts as one ascends.
如是所說諸天眾中,頌曰:六受欲交抱,執手笑視婬。論曰:唯六欲天受妙欲境,於中初二依地居天,形交成婬與人無別。然風氣泄熱惱便除,非如人間有餘不淨。夜摩天眾纔抱成婬,覩史多天但由執手,樂變化天唯相向笑,他化自在相視成婬。毘婆沙師作如是釋:六天皆以形交成婬。世施設中說相抱等,但為顯彼時量差別。以上諸天欲境轉妙、貪心轉捷故使之然。隨彼諸天男女膝上,有童男童女欻爾化生,即說為彼天所生男女。
Among the various hosts of gods thus described, verse: the six that experience desire unite through intercourse, embrace, holding hands, smiling, and gazing. Prose: only the six desire-realm heavens experience the objects of exquisite desire. Among these, the first two are earth-dwelling heavens, where physical union constitutes sexual intercourse no different from that of human beings — except that, for them, the release of wind dispels the heat of passion, unlike the human world, where there remains additional impurity. Among the Yāma Heaven's hosts, a mere embrace constitutes intercourse; for the Tuṣita Heaven, it is accomplished simply by holding hands; for the Heaven of Enjoying Transformations, merely by smiling at one another; for the Heaven of Mastery over Others' Transformations, by gazing at one another. The Vaibhāṣikas offer this explanation: all six heavens accomplish intercourse through physical union; what the Prajñaptiśāstra states about embracing and the rest is meant only to indicate differences in the duration of that union. This is because, in the higher heavens, the objects of desire become progressively more refined and the mind's craving becomes progressively swifter, and this is what brings it about. Upon the laps of these gods and goddesses, boy and girl children are spontaneously born through transformation — these are then said to be the sons and daughters born to that heaven.
The Vaibhāṣika reinterpretation is worth flagging as another instance of this fascicle's recurring move: a canonical description (embrace, hand-holding, smiling, gazing) that looks like it specifies different physical acts is instead reread as all describing the same underlying act, differing only in duration — refined desire in higher heavens supposedly resolves so quickly that a glance suffices where a human needs full intercourse. Whether one reads this as literal escalating abstraction or as a single act reframed by degree, the underlying logic is consistent with this tradition's general picture of the desire realm: as one ascends, everything about desire — its intensity, its duration, its physical expression — becomes progressively more refined and less coarse, without disappearing outright until the form realm is reached.
24. Newborn Gods, and a Single Shared Language
A god or goddess is never born small: at the very instant of spontaneous birth, a desire-realm deity already has the body of a five-to-ten-year-old human child and swiftly reaches full maturity, while a form-realm deity is complete and fully clothed from the first instant. Every single god, across every heaven, is said to speak exactly the same language — identical to the speech of Central India.
初生天眾身量云何?頌曰:初如五至十,色圓滿有衣。論曰:且六欲諸天初生,如次如五六七八九十歲人,生已身形速得成滿。色界天眾於初生時,身量周圓具妙衣服。一切天眾皆作聖言,謂彼言詞同中印度。
What is the bodily size of these gods at the moment of their birth? Verse: at first, like human children from age five up to ten; in the form realm, their form is instantly complete, and they are clothed. Prose: as for the six desire-realm heavens, at the moment of birth, their bodily size resembles, respectively, that of a human child aged five, six, seven, eight, nine, or ten years; once born, their bodily form swiftly reaches full maturity. The form-realm gods, at the moment of birth, have bodies that are immediately complete and fully formed, and are already clothed in wondrous garments. All the hosts of gods, without exception, speak the noble language — that is, their speech is identical to that of Central India.
The ascending scale of birth-size (five years old for the lowest desire heaven, up to ten for the highest) tracks the same six-step refinement already seen in these heavens' modes of union — a consistent numerical logic where "higher" correlates with "more complete from the start," culminating in the form realm's gods, who skip childhood altogether and arrive instantly grown and dressed. The claim that all gods speak the language of Central India is a striking piece of linguistic cosmology in its own right: it treats a specific, historically real regional dialect of the human world as the cosmic default, spoken without variation from the lowest heaven to the highest, rather than treating language as something that would naturally differ across realms as dramatically as bodies, lifespans, or modes of desire do.
25. Three Kinds of Desire-Birth, Three Kinds of Bliss-Birth
Beings who enjoy sense-pleasure divide into three kinds depending on whose objects of desire they enjoy — their own present ones, their own self-transformed ones, or objects transformed by others — mapping neatly onto the desire realm's own internal hierarchy. Beings in the three dhyānas above, meanwhile, divide into three kinds of "bliss-birth" by the specific flavor of joy and bliss they abide in — though the treatise immediately flags its own loose end: the intermediate dhyāna between the first and second has no joy or bliss at all, so why is it still classed among the heavens of "bliss-birth"?
欲樂生別云何應知?頌曰:欲生三人天,樂生三九處。論曰:欲生三者,有諸有情樂受現前諸妙欲境,彼於如是現欲境中自在而轉,謂全人趣及下四天。有諸有情樂受自化諸妙欲境,彼於自化妙欲境中自在而轉,謂唯第五樂變化天。有諸有情樂受他化諸妙欲境,彼於他化妙欲境中自在而轉,謂第六他化自在天。依受如生現前欲境故,依受如樂自化欲境故,依受如樂他化欲境故,於欲界中分別欲生差別三種。樂生三者,三靜慮中於九處生受三種樂,謂彼安住離生喜樂、定生喜樂,離喜樂故,長時安住、長時離苦、長時受樂,故名樂生。生靜慮中間都無喜樂應思,何故亦號樂生天?
How should the distinctions among "desire-birth" and "bliss-birth" be understood? Verse: desire-birth is threefold, spanning humans and gods; bliss-birth is threefold, spanning nine places. Prose: as for the three kinds of desire-birth: there are sentient beings who take pleasure in the present, exquisite objects of desire directly before them, exercising free mastery within these very present objects of desire — this refers to the entirety of the human destiny together with the four lower heavens. There are sentient beings who take pleasure in exquisite objects of desire that they themselves transform, exercising free mastery within these self-transformed exquisite objects of desire — this refers solely to the fifth heaven, the Heaven of Enjoying Transformations. There are sentient beings who take pleasure in exquisite objects of desire transformed by others, exercising free mastery within these other-transformed exquisite objects of desire — this refers to the sixth heaven, the Heaven of Mastery over Others' Transformations. On the basis of experiencing present objects of desire as they naturally arise, on the basis of experiencing self-transformed objects of desire as a source of pleasure, and on the basis of experiencing other-transformed objects of desire as a source of pleasure, three distinct kinds of desire-birth are distinguished within the desire realm. As for the three kinds of bliss-birth: within the three dhyānas, across nine places of birth, three kinds of bliss are experienced — namely, abiding in the joy and bliss born of seclusion, the joy and bliss born of concentration, and, having become free of joy, a further bliss — abiding for a long duration, remaining free of suffering for a long duration, experiencing bliss for a long duration; hence it is called "bliss-birth." One should consider: in the intermediate dhyāna, there is no joy or bliss at all present — why, then, is it too called a heaven of "bliss-birth"?
The text poses its own closing question — why the joyless, blissless intermediate dhyāna still counts as a "bliss-birth" heaven — and, notably, does not answer it here, moving straight on to a new topic in what follows. We have left this exactly as an open question, matching the text's own "應思" ("one should reflect on this"), rather than supplying a resolution the passage itself does not provide.
26. One Rule for Twenty-Two Heavens, All the Way to Akaniṣṭha
Rather than tabulating twenty-two separate distances, the treatise gives a single self-similar rule: whatever distance a heaven sits above the great ocean below, that same distance separates it from the heaven directly above — a pattern that repeats all the way up to Akaniṣṭha, "Ultimate Form," the very highest heaven, beyond which nothing further exists at all.
所說諸天二十二處,上下相去其量云何?頌曰:如彼去下量,去上數亦然。論曰:一一中間踰繕那量,非易可數,但可總舉彼去下量,去上例然。隨從何天去下海量,彼上所至與去下同。謂妙高山從第四層級去下大海四萬踰繕那,是四大王本所住處,從彼上去三十三天,亦如彼天去下海量。如三十三天去下大海,上去夜摩天其量亦爾。如是乃至如善見天去下大海踰繕那量,從彼上去色究竟天亦與彼天去下海等。從此向上無復所居,此處最高名色究竟。有餘師說:彼名礙究竟天。彼謂礙名目積集色至彼礙盡,得究竟名。
Among the twenty-two heavens described, what is the measure of the vertical distance separating them, upper from lower? Verse: as is a heaven's distance down to the ocean, so too is its distance up the same. Prose: the exact number of yojanas between any two adjacent heavens is not easily enumerated one by one; but, in general terms, one may state that a heaven's distance up to the one above it always equals its own distance down to the great ocean below. That is: Mount Sumeru's fourth terrace lies 40,000 yojanas above the great ocean, and this is the original dwelling-place of the Four Great Kings; from there upward to the Thirty-Three, the distance is likewise equal to that terrace's own distance down to the ocean. Just as the Thirty-Three's distance down to the great ocean is what it is, so too its distance up to the Yāma Heaven is the same amount. And so it continues, up to the point where, whatever a given heaven's distance down to the great ocean in yojanas may be, its distance up to the heaven above — all the way up to Akaniṣṭha — is likewise equal to that same heaven's own distance down to the ocean. Beyond this point upward there is no further dwelling-place; this is the highest place, called Akaniṣṭha, "Ultimate Form." There is a further view: that it should be called "Ultimate Obstruction Heaven" — on this reading, "obstruction" refers to the accumulation of form; when one reaches the point where this accumulation of obstruction is exhausted, it earns the name "ultimate."
This is the same self-similar, recursive design principle already seen governing the nine mountains and eight seas back near the beginning of this fascicle, now applied at an entirely different scale: rather than needing twenty-one separate measurements for the gaps between twenty-two heavens, one rule (distance up equals distance down) generates the whole vertical structure of the cosmos from a single starting measurement. The two proposed etymologies for Akaniṣṭha's name — "Ultimate Form," marking the very last outpost of anything with physical form at all before the formless realm begins, versus "Ultimate Obstruction," marking the point where the accumulation of form (understood as a kind of obstruction) is finally exhausted — describe the same boundary from two different conceptual angles: one names what is present up to this point, the other names what runs out at it.
27. Can Lower Gods See or Reach the Heavens Above Them?
A being born in a lower heaven cannot ascend to or even perceive a higher one unaided — only supernormal power, one's own or borrowed from another, makes the ascent possible. Lower eyes simply cannot register a higher realm's ground at all, which is also why a higher god visiting a lower realm cannot appear in its own actual body, but must first construct a transformation-body suited to that lower ground.
於下處生昇見上不?頌曰:離通力依他,下無昇見上。論曰:三十三天由自通力,能從本處昇夜摩天;或復依他,謂得通者及上天眾接往夜摩。所餘諸天昇上例爾,若來若至下見上天。然下眼不能覩上界上地,非其境界故。如不覺彼觸,是故從上地來下地時非自身來,要作下地化。有餘部說:彼下地天隨樂亦能見上地色,如生此界下見上天。
Can one born in a lower place ascend to, or see, what is above? Verse: apart from supernormal power or reliance on another, one born below cannot ascend to or see what is above. Prose: the Thirty-Three, through their own supernormal power, are able to ascend from their original place to the Yāma Heaven; or else, by relying on another — that is, one who has attained supernormal power, or the higher gods themselves, may receive and carry them up to the Yāma Heaven. The remaining heavens' ascent follows this same pattern, whether coming or going. However, the eyes of a lower being cannot perceive the higher realm or higher ground, since this does not fall within their sensory domain — just as one does not feel that subtler being's touch. For this reason, when a being from a higher ground comes down to a lower ground, it does not come in its own actual body, but must instead create a transformation-body suited to the lower ground. There is a further school's view: that gods of the lower ground, according to their wish, are also able to see the form of the higher ground — just as, being born in this desire realm, one can see the heavens below.
The rule that a higher being must construct a transformation-body before visiting a lower realm is a small but consequential detail: it means no lower being ever actually perceives a higher being's true form directly — every encounter across realms is necessarily mediated by a body deliberately scaled down and adapted for the audience, never the higher being's own unmodified reality. This adds an interesting wrinkle to any story elsewhere in Buddhist literature involving gods appearing to humans or lower gods: strictly by this cosmology's own logic, what is seen is always already a constructed appearance, not the visiting being as it actually exists in its own realm.
28. Heavenly Palace Sizes, and Defining a Small, Medium, and Great Chiliocosm
How big are the sky-dwelling heavens' palaces? The treatise offers several competing scholarly answers without choosing between them, before turning to define, with precision, the classic Buddhist cosmological hierarchy: a thousand complete world-systems make a small chiliocosm, a thousand of those make a medium chiliocosm, and a thousand of those make a great chiliocosm — the entire structure rising and falling together as a single unit.
夜摩等天宮依處量有幾?有餘師說:此上四天依處,量同妙高山頂。有餘師說:上倍倍增。有餘師言:初靜慮地宮殿依處等一四洲,第二靜慮等小千界,第三靜慮等中千界,第四靜慮等大千界。有餘師言:下三靜慮如次量等小中大千,第四靜慮量無邊際。齊何量說小中大千?頌曰:四大洲日月,蘇迷盧欲天,梵世各一千,名一小千界;此小千千倍,說名一中千;此千倍大千,皆同一成壞。論曰:千四大洲乃至梵世,如是總說為一小千,千倍小千名一中千界,千中千界總名一大千,如是大千同成同壞。同成壞相後當廣辯。
How large are the palaces of the Yāma Heaven and the heavens above it? There is a further view: that the dwelling-places of these four heavens above are equal in size to the summit of Mount Sumeru. There is a further view: that each successive heaven doubles in size. There is a further view: that the first dhyāna's palace-dwellings are equal in extent to a single set of four continents; the second dhyāna's, equal to a small chiliocosm; the third dhyāna's, equal to a medium chiliocosm; the fourth dhyāna's, equal to a great chiliocosm. There is a further view: that the lower three dhyānas are, respectively, equal in measure to a small, medium, and great chiliocosm, while the fourth dhyāna's measure is without any boundary at all. By what measure are "small," "medium," and "great" chiliocosms defined? Verse: four continents, a sun and moon, Sumeru, and the desire-realm heavens, together with a Brahmā-world, each taken a thousandfold — this is called a small chiliocosm. This small chiliocosm, taken a thousandfold, is called a medium chiliocosm. This, taken a thousandfold, is a great chiliocosm — all of it undergoing one shared formation and one shared destruction. Prose: a thousand sets of four continents, up through a thousand Brahmā-worlds — this is, in sum, called one small chiliocosm; a thousand small chiliocosms is called one medium chiliocosm; a thousand medium chiliocosms is, in total, called one great chiliocosm — and such a great chiliocosm undergoes one shared formation and one shared destruction together. The specific characteristics of this shared formation and destruction will be discussed at length later.
The four competing views on heavenly palace size are left entirely unadjudicated — no argument is given for or against any of them, unlike most of this fascicle's other unresolved debates, which at least offer some reasoning on each side. This may simply reflect that the question is treated as genuinely unanswerable from first principles, a matter of received tradition varying by school rather than something arguable from doctrine.
The small/medium/great chiliocosm structure gives a precise technical grounding to the phrase "three-thousand great thousand world-system" (三千大千世界) already used earlier in this fascicle to describe the scale at which the wind, water, and gold wheels are established — it is not "three thousand worlds" in a simple sense, but a thousand-cubed structure: a thousand small chiliocosms making one medium chiliocosm, and a thousand of those making one great chiliocosm, for a billion base world-systems in total, all sharing a single fate of arising and passing away together.
29. Body Sizes Across the Cosmos: From 3.5 Cubits to 16,000 Yojanas
Bodies scale up right alongside the container world's own architecture: ordinary Jambudvīpa humans stand about 3.5 cubits tall, doubling with each successive continent outward; the six desire heavens increase by a quarter-krośa at each level; and the form realm's heavens leap first by half-yojana increments, then by straightforward doubling, all the way up to Akaniṣṭha's almost incomprehensible 16,000 yojanas.
如外器量別,身量亦別耶?亦別。云何?頌曰:贍部洲人量,三肘半四肘;東西北洲人,倍倍增如次。欲天俱盧舍,四分一一增;色天踰繕那,初四增半半;此上增倍倍,唯無雲減三。論曰:贍部洲人身多長三肘半,於中少分有長四肘。東勝身人身長八肘,西牛貨人長十六肘,北俱盧人三十二肘。欲界六天最下身量一俱盧舍四分之一,如是後後一一分增,至第六天身一俱盧舍半。色天身量初梵眾天半踰繕那,梵輔全一,大梵一半,少光二全,此上餘天皆增倍倍,唯無雲減三踰繕那,謂無量光天倍增二至四,乃至色究竟增滿萬六千。
Just as the container world's own measurements differ from place to place, do bodily sizes differ too? They do. How so? Verse: Jambudvīpa people's height is 3.5 cubits, or 4 cubits; the eastern, western, and northern continents' people double in succession. The desire heavens, in krośa, increase by one-quarter at each level. The form heavens, in yojanas, increase by half at first; above this they double, except that Anabhraka decreases by three. Prose: Jambudvīpa people's bodies are mostly 3.5 cubits long; among them, a small portion reach 4 cubits. Pūrvavideha people are 8 cubits tall; Aparagodānīya people, 16 cubits; Uttarakuru people, 32 cubits. The desire realm's six heavens: the lowest body-size is one-quarter krośa; thereafter, each successive heaven increases by one quarter, up to the sixth heaven, whose body is one and a half krośa. The form realm's body sizes: the first, Brahmakāyika, is half a yojana; Brahmapurohita, a full one; Mahābrahmā, one and a half; Parīttābha, a full two. Above this, the remaining heavens all double in succession; only Anabhraka decreases by three yojanas from what doubling would otherwise give. That is: Apramāṇābha doubles from two to four; and so on, up to Akaniṣṭha, which reaches a full 16,000.
Honest flag: the source gives the governing rule (double at each step, except Anabhraka, which falls three short of what doubling predicts) plus a handful of anchor values — Brahmakāyika through Parīttābha, then Apramāṇābha, then the final figure for Akaniṣṭha — but does not spell out every intermediate heaven's exact figure across the full sixteen- or seventeen-heaven form realm. Reconstructing every missing value by mechanically applying "double, except Anabhraka minus three" would require knowing exactly where in the sequence Anabhraka's exception applies and carrying the arithmetic accurately across a dozen further steps; rather than risk another silent numerical error of the kind already caught and corrected earlier in this fascicle, we have translated only the figures the text actually states, leaving the intermediate heavens' sizes as an open gap rather than a computed guess.
The scaling logic itself is worth noting as a unifying thread running through this entire fascicle: bodies, like mountains, seas, and heavenly distances, are governed by simple multiplicative rules (doubling, halving, quarter-increments) rather than arbitrary figures — the cosmos, at every scale examined so far, turns out to be built from a small number of repeated proportional patterns.
30. Lifespans Across the Continents and Desire Heavens
Uttarakuru's lifespan is a fixed thousand years, halving through Aparagodānīya and Pūrvavideha, while Jambudvīpa alone has no fixed limit at all — swinging from just ten years at a declining eon's end to an incalculable span at its beginning. The six desire heavens are reckoned differently still: a single day-and-night for the lowest heaven equals fifty human years, and each heaven above doubles both its day-length and its total lifespan in turn.
身量既殊,壽量別不?亦別。云何?頌曰:北洲定千年,西東半半減,此洲壽不定,後十初叵量。人間五十年,下天一晝夜,乘斯壽五百,上五倍倍增。論曰:北俱盧人定壽千歲,西牛貨人壽五百歲,東勝身人壽二百五十歲,南贍部人壽無定限。劫減最後極壽十年,於劫初時人壽無量,百千等數不能計量。已說人間壽量長短。要先建立天上晝夜,方可算計天壽短長。天上云何建立晝夜?人五十歲為六天中最在下天一晝一夜,乘斯晝夜三十為月,十二月為歲,彼壽五百年。上五欲天漸俱增倍,謂人百歲為第二天一晝一夜,乘此晝夜成月及年彼壽千歲。夜摩等四隨次如人,二四八百千六百歲為一晝一夜,乘此晝夜成月及年,如次彼壽二四八千萬六千歲。
Since bodily size differs, do lifespans differ too? They do. How so? Verse: the northern continent's lifespan is fixed at a thousand years; the western and eastern continents decrease by half each in succession; this continent's lifespan is not fixed — at a declining eon's end, it drops to ten years; at the eon's beginning, it is beyond calculation. Fifty human years equal one day-and-night for the lowest heaven; multiplying this, their lifespan is five hundred years; the five heavens above successively double. Prose: Uttarakuru people have a fixed lifespan of a thousand years; Aparagodānīya people, five hundred years; Pūrvavideha people, two hundred fifty years; Jambudvīpa people have no fixed lifespan limit. At a declining eon's very end, the maximal lifespan is ten years; at the eon's very beginning, human lifespan is immeasurable, a span that cannot be calculated even in the hundreds of thousands. The length of human lifespans has thus been discussed. One must first establish how day-and-night is reckoned in the heavens before one can calculate the length of heavenly lifespans. How is day-and-night established in the heavens? Fifty human years equal a single day-and-night for the lowest of the six desire heavens; multiplying this day-and-night, thirty make a month, twelve months make a year, and their lifespan is five hundred such years. The five desire heavens above gradually double in turn: that is, one hundred human years equal a single day-and-night for the second heaven; multiplying this day-and-night into months and years, their lifespan is a thousand such years. For the Yāma Heaven and the three above it, in succession, two hundred, four hundred, eight hundred, and sixteen hundred human years, respectively, equal a single day-and-night; multiplying this day-and-night into months and years, their lifespans are, respectively, two thousand, four thousand, eight thousand, and sixteen thousand years.
Jambudvīpa's uniquely unfixed lifespan — swinging between a mere ten years and an incalculable span depending on where a given eon sits in its cycle of decline and renewal — stands out sharply against the other three continents' flat, unchanging figures, and against the desire heavens' own perfectly regular doubling pattern. Human life in this cosmology is treated as the one genuinely volatile, historically contingent quantity in an otherwise remarkably stable, rule-governed universe — fitting, perhaps, for the one realm this entire text keeps returning to as the setting for its central concerns: karma, practice, and liberation.
The day-and-night correlation is an elegant piece of relativistic reckoning: it isn't that heavenly beings simply live "longer" in some vague sense, but that both their day-length and their total lifespan double together at each level, so that a being in the sixth desire heaven experiences the same number of subjective days and years as a being in the first, just at a vastly different absolute scale relative to human time — 16,000 of that heaven's own years amounting to a length of time no human timeframe can register at all.
31. Day and Night Without a Sun, and Form-Realm Lifespans Matched to Body Size
Above Yugandhara, no sun or moon reaches at all — so the higher desire heavens mark day and night by lotus blossoms opening and closing, birds falling silent, or the gods' own waking and sleeping, lit entirely by their own bodily radiance. The form realm dispenses with day and night altogether: lifespan is counted purely in kalpas, and — in a strikingly clean rule — a heaven's kalpa-lifespan is numerically identical to its body-size in yojanas.
持雙以上日月並無,彼天云何建立晝夜及光明事?依何得成?依花開合建立晝夜,如拘物陀、鉢特摩等。又依諸鳥鳴靜差別,或依天眾寤寐不同,依自身光明成外光明事。已說欲界天壽短長。色界天中無晝夜別,但以劫數知壽短長。彼劫壽短長與身量數等,謂若身量半踰繕那,壽量半劫;若彼身量一踰繕那,壽量一劫;乃至身量長萬六千,壽量亦同萬六千劫。已說色界天壽短長。
Above Yugandhara, there is no sun or moon at all — how, then, do these heavens establish day-and-night and the matter of illumination? On what basis is this accomplished? Day-and-night is established on the basis of flowers opening and closing, such as the blue lotus and the red lotus; or else on the basis of the difference between birds' calling and falling silent; or else on the basis of the gods' own alternation between waking and sleeping; illumination is accomplished by their own bodily radiance. The length of the desire realm heavens' lifespans has thus been discussed. Among the form realm's heavens, there is no distinction of day and night at all — lifespan-length is known only by counting kalpas. The length of these heavens' kalpa-lifespans corresponds exactly to their body-size figures: that is, if a heaven's body-size is half a yojana, its lifespan is half a kalpa; if that body-size is one yojana, its lifespan is one kalpa; and so on, up to a body-size of 16,000 yojanas, whose lifespan is likewise 16,000 kalpas. The length of the form realm heavens' lifespans has thus been discussed.
The body-size-equals-kalpa-lifespan rule is a remarkably compact piece of cosmological design: rather than needing a separate table of lifespans for the form realm's sixteen or seventeen heavens, one simply reuses the body-size figures already given in the previous section and reads them again as kalpa-counts. This is the same economizing instinct already seen throughout this fascicle — a single governing relationship standing in for what would otherwise require an entirely separate, independently memorized set of numbers.
32. The Formless Realm's Lifespans, and What a "Kalpa" Actually Means
The four formless heavens' lifespans climb from twenty thousand to eighty thousand kalpas — but this raises a question the treatise cannot skip: what exactly is a "kalpa" at this scale? From Ābhāsvara upward it means a full great kalpa, but for the three heavens below it, a kalpa means only a "great half" — precisely forty medium kalpas, which is also why Mahābrahmā is said to outlive Brahmapurohita's heaven by exactly half a kalpa.
無色四天從下如次壽量二四六八萬劫。上所說劫其量云何?為壞為成?為中為大?少光以上大全為劫,自下諸天大半為劫。即由此故,說大梵王過梵輔天壽一劫半。謂以成住壞各二十中劫,六十中劫為一劫半,故以大半四十中劫為下三天所壽劫量。已說善趣壽量短長。
The four formless heavens, from the lowest upward, have lifespans, in succession, of twenty thousand, forty thousand, sixty thousand, and eighty thousand kalpas. What is the measure of the "kalpa" spoken of above? Is it a kalpa of destruction, of formation, a medium kalpa, or a great kalpa? From Ābhāsvara upward, it is a full great kalpa; for the heavens below this, it is a "great half" kalpa. It is precisely for this reason that it is said that Mahābrahmā's lifespan exceeds that of Brahmapurohita's heaven by half a kalpa. That is: taking formation, abiding, and destruction as twenty medium kalpas each, sixty medium kalpas make one and a half great kalpas; hence forty medium kalpas — a "great half" — is taken as the kalpa-measure of the lifespan of the lower three heavens. The length of the fortunate destinies' lifespans has thus been discussed.
The "great half" kalpa is a genuinely clever piece of unit reconciliation: a full great kalpa is defined as eighty medium kalpas (twenty each for formation, abiding, destruction, and a further quiescent period), so "sixty medium kalpas" — the three visible phases without the quiescent fourth — comes to exactly one and a half great kalpas, and "forty medium kalpas" (the "great half") is precisely half of that eighty-medium-kalpa total. This lets Mahābrahmā's extra half-kalpa lifespan over Brahmapurohita's heaven be stated cleanly in both systems of reckoning at once, rather than requiring two incompatible timescales to somehow line up by coincidence — the arithmetic is deliberately built to make the two descriptions consistent.
33. Hell Lifespans: Mirroring the Heavens, Then Exceeding Them
The hot hells' lifespans mirror the desire heavens' own figures in a striking way: each of the six desire heavens' entire lifespan becomes a single day-and-night for its corresponding hell, and that hell's own lifespan, reckoned in those hellish years, equals the same number again. Beyond the six correlated hells, Great Scorching and Avīci break the pattern entirely, measured in medium kalpas instead — and even animals, at their very longest, can live a full kalpa, like the great nāga kings said to sustain the earth itself.
惡趣云何?頌曰:等活等上六,如次以欲天,壽為一晝夜,壽量亦同彼。極熱半中劫,無間中劫全,傍生極一中,鬼月日五百。論曰:四大王等六欲天壽,如其次第為等活等六㮈落迦一晝一夜,壽量如次亦同彼天。謂四大王壽量五百,於等活地獄為一晝一夜,乘此晝夜成月及年,以如是年彼壽五百。乃至他化壽萬六千,於炎熱地獄為一晝一夜,乘此晝夜成月及年,彼壽如斯萬六千歲。極熱地獄壽半中劫,無間地獄壽一中劫。傍生壽量多無定限,若壽極長亦一中劫,謂難陀等諸大龍王。故世尊言:大龍有八,皆住一劫能持大地。鬼以人間一月為一日,乘此成月歲壽五百年。
What of the bad destinies? Verse: for the Reviving Hell and the six above it, in order, the six desire heavens' lifespans serve as a single day-and-night, and their lifespans likewise equal those same heavens' own total lifespans. Great Scorching's lifespan is half a medium kalpa; Avīci's, a full medium kalpa. Animals', at most, one medium kalpa. Ghosts: a month equals a day, and their lifespan is five hundred years. Prose: the lifespans of the Four Great Kings and the other five desire heavens serve, in that same order, as a single day-and-night for the Reviving Hell and the other five hells above; these hells' lifespans, in that same order, likewise equal those same heavens' own total lifespans. That is: the Four Great Kings' lifespan of five hundred years serves as a single day-and-night in the Reviving Hell; multiplying this day-and-night into months and years, by that same reckoning, its lifespan is five hundred such years. And so on, up to the Heaven of Mastery over Others' Transformations' lifespan of sixteen thousand years, which serves as a single day-and-night in the Scorching Hell; multiplying this day-and-night into months and years, its lifespan is likewise sixteen thousand such years. Great Scorching Hell's lifespan is half a medium kalpa; Avīci's lifespan is a full medium kalpa. Animals' lifespans are mostly unfixed; at their very longest, they too reach a full medium kalpa — as with Nanda and the other great nāga kings. Hence the World-Honored One said: there are eight great nāgas, each abiding for a full kalpa, capable of sustaining the great earth. For ghosts, a human month equals a single one of their days; multiplying this into their own months and years, their lifespan is five hundred such years.
The hot hells' lifespans are built by directly reusing the desire heavens' own figures twice over — once as the length of a single day-and-night, and again as the total year-count — meaning each hell's total duration, converted back into ordinary years, is almost incomprehensibly vast even before reaching Great Scorching and Avīci, which abandon this correlated structure entirely in favor of medium kalpas. This asymmetry is worth noting: suffering in these deepest two hells is measured on the same absolute cosmic timescale used for the destruction and formation of entire world-systems, no longer expressed relative to any heaven's day-night cycle at all.
34. The Sesame-Seed Simile: How Long Is a Cold Hell's Lifespan?
The cold hells' durations defy ordinary numerical description entirely, so the Buddha reaches for a simile instead: imagine a vast Magadhan grain-measure filled level to the brim with sesame seeds, with a single seed removed once every hundred years. However long it takes to empty that vessel completely, the lifespan of one born in Arbuda, the first cold hell, is harder still to exhaust — and each cold hell after that multiplies the last by twenty again.
寒那落迦云何壽量?世尊寄喻顯彼壽言:如此人間佉梨二十成摩揭陀國一麻婆訶量,有置巨勝平滿其中,設復有能百年除一。如是巨勝易有盡期,生頞部陀壽量難盡。此二十倍為第二壽,如是後後二十倍增,是謂八寒地獄壽量。
What is the lifespan of the cold hells? The World-Honored One conveyed their lifespan by means of a simile: just as, in the human world, twenty khārīs make one māgadha droṇa-measure of Magadha, and were this vessel filled level to the brim with sesame seeds, and further suppose someone were able to remove a single seed once every hundred years — even so, these sesame seeds would eventually reach their end, but one born in Arbuda's lifespan would be difficult to exhaust even then. Twenty times this constitutes the second cold hell's lifespan, and so each subsequent one increases twentyfold again — these are the lifespans of the eight cold hells.
The sesame-seed simile is doing something the numerical apparatus used everywhere else in this fascicle cannot: rather than stating a kalpa-count or a day-night correlation, it conveys scale through sheer procedural tedium — a vessel so full that removing one seed per century still leaves the reader unable to picture its emptying, and then explicitly states that even this barely-imaginable span is shorter than a single cold hell's lifespan. The seven remaining cold hells, each twenty times the last, compound this already-ungraspable duration into something the text does not even attempt to re-express numerically — the simile itself, not a number, is the actual unit being scaled up sevenfold.
35. Untimely Death, and Those Exempt From It
Fascicle 11 closes on a question that reframes everything just measured: do all these carefully tabulated lifespans actually run their full course, or can they be cut short? Every place admits of untimely death except Uttarakuru, whose thousand years are truly fixed — but even elsewhere, certain specific individuals are exempt: a bodhisattva in Tuṣita bound for just one more birth, a buddha in his final existence, a buddha himself, one already predicted to buddhahood, a buddha's emissary, faith- and dharma-followers on the path, a bodhisattva, a wheel-turning king, and even the mother who carries a future bodhisattva or wheel-king in her womb.
此諸壽量有中夭耶?頌曰:諸處有中夭,除北俱盧洲。論曰:諸處壽量皆有中夭,唯北俱盧定壽千歲。此約處說,非別有情,有別有情不中夭故。謂住覩史多天一生所繫菩薩,及最後有佛記佛使隨信法行菩薩輪王,母懷彼二胎時,此等如應皆無中夭。
Do all these lifespans admit of untimely death? Verse: every place admits of untimely death, except Uttarakuru. Prose: in every place, lifespans admit of untimely death, except that Uttarakuru alone has a fixed lifespan of a thousand years. This is stated with reference to place in general, not to every individual being, since there are particular individual beings who do not die an untimely death. Namely: the bodhisattva bound to a single more birth dwelling in the Tuṣita Heaven; one in his final existence; a buddha; one who has received a prediction of buddhahood; a buddha's emissary; a faith-follower or dharma-follower; a bodhisattva; a wheel-turning king; and, while a mother is carrying either of these last two — a bodhisattva or a wheel-turning king — in her womb, she too, as is appropriate, is free from untimely death.
Honest flag: this closing list compresses nine distinct categories of exemption into a single dense clause, and the exact boundaries between a few of them — a "buddha in his final existence" versus "a buddha" himself, or how "bodhisattva" here relates to the Tuṣita-dwelling bodhisattva already named at the start of the same list — are not fully spelled out. We have translated the enumeration in the order given rather than silently merging or reordering categories to make them read more cleanly than the source itself does.
The list as a whole draws a suggestive line between statistical protection and biographical certainty: an ordinary being anywhere but Uttarakuru lives under the general rule that death can arrive early, but a being whose future course is already fixed by prediction, final existence, or advanced attainment on the path is exempted from that same uncertainty — including, strikingly, the pregnant mother of such a being, whose own untimely death would retroactively undo a future the cosmology treats as already settled. Certainty of destiny, once again in this tradition, turns out to reach backward and protect the conditions that make that destiny possible.

Fascicle 11 is now complete in 35 sections. Opening Chapter 3's fourth installment with a decisive pivot from the world of sentient beings to the container world itself, the fascicle built the physical cosmos from the ground up: the wind, water, and gold wheels (with a numeral-reading error caught and corrected along the way), the nine mountains and eight seas radiating outward from Mount Sumeru in a single self-similar pattern, the four great continents and their eight satellite continents, Lake Anavatapta and the Jambu forest that names Jambudvīpa itself, and a philosophical digression refuting the Sāṃkhya school's theory of causal "transformation." It then descended into the hells — Avīci and the seven hells above it, the sixteen surrounding torments described in unflinching detail, a live debate over whether hell-guardians are real sentient beings, the eight cold hells, and the "heap of grain" solution to how so small a continent could contain them all — before ascending through the sun and moon, Sumeru's four terraces, the Heaven of the Thirty-Three's golden city and gardens, and the twenty-two heavens governed by a single elegant rule of vertical distance. The fascicle closed by cataloguing body sizes and lifespans across the entire cosmos, down to the sesame-seed simile for the cold hells' near-incomprehensible duration, ending on the question of untimely death and the specific individuals exempt from it.
