The Odometer of the Path

Fascicle 92 works through full comprehension and realization through cessation across each faculty's own presence, cessation, and path of cutting-off, then cross-references possession against a new fivefold bondage classification — tracking a practitioner's own exact progress from ordinary being to full liberation as a precise, countable reduction. This page carries Ru-Yi's complete translation.

The Chinese source is Xuánzàng's seventh-century translation of the Abhidharma-mahāvibhāṣā-śāstra (阿毘達磨大毘婆沙論), preserved in the Taishō canon (T1545, vol. 27) via the CBETA digital edition — public domain text, translated directly from the Chinese. The English wording throughout is Ru-Yi's own, and the reading notes are original, grounded in standard Sarvāstivāda scholarship rather than a specific named commentator's lecture transcript.

Fascicle 92 continues the Ten Gates Nyāsa (結蘊第二中十門納息第四之二十二), completing possession (成就) for the path of cutting-off, then working through full comprehension (遍知) and realization through cessation (滅作證), before opening a fivefold bondage classification — the nine fetters (九結), three bonds (三縛), ten latent tendencies (十隨眠, a distinct tenfold reckoning), six defilements (六垢), and ten entanglements (十纏) — cross-referenced against possession and tracked stage by stage across the entire path. Terms established in earlier fascicles recur here and are not re-explained at each occurrence.

Classical text is set in the left-hand column below, our English in the right.

1. Possession, Concluded: The Path of Cutting-Off

Fascicle 92 opens exactly where fascicle 91 broke off, closing out the possession gateway for each faculty's own path of cutting-off — the eye faculty's own path of cutting-off, taken as object both directly and as an object-of-that-object, possessed by every sentient being without exception, while its own increasing latent tendency is possessed only by one not yet free of the formless realm's own defilement.

The eye faculty, up through the formless realm's own latent tendency of ignorance abandoned by cultivation, its own path of cutting-off, taken as object both directly and as an object-of-that-object — who possesses this, and who does not? The answer: as for the eye faculty's own path of cutting-off, taken as object both directly and as an object-of-that-object: every sentient being without exception possesses it. As for the ear, nose, tongue, body, life, mind, pleasure, joy, equanimity, and the five faculties of faith and the rest's own path of cutting-off, taken as object both directly and as an object-of-that-object, being just the same. As for the female faculty's own path of cutting-off, taken as a direct object: one within the desire and form realms, and a noble one reborn within the formless realm, possesses it; an ordinary being reborn within the formless realm does not possess it. As for it taken as an object-of-that-object: every sentient being without exception possesses it. As for the male, suffering-, and sorrow-faculties' own path of cutting-off, taken as object both directly and as an object-of-that-object, being just the same: the meaning pertaining to the remaining chapters should be understood according to this same pattern. Reading note — Ru-Yi

That the bare path of cutting-off is possessed universally, while the latent tendency that increases with respect to it is possessed only conditionally, captures a genuinely important distinction this whole apparatus depends on: the path itself, as an object available to be taken up by any mind whatsoever, belongs to everyone, but the affliction capable of clinging to that object belongs only to those who have not yet advanced far enough to have exhausted it.

2. Full Comprehension, Applied to Direct Presence, Cessation, and the Path of Cutting-Off

The full-comprehension gateway is now worked through for all three modifiers in turn: the eye faculty's own direct-object full comprehension is attained at the exhaustion of craving for the sphere of infinite space, with no fetter yet exhausted at that point; its own cessation, attained at the exhaustion of craving for form, exhausts an ordinary being's own thirty-one latent tendencies or a noble one's own three, again with no fetter yet exhausted; and its own path of cutting-off, attained at the exhaustion of craving for the formless, exhausts three latent tendencies and three fetters at once.

Reading note — Ru-Yi

That the path of cutting-off is the only one of the three modifiers whose full comprehension actually exhausts a fetter, while the faculty's own bare presence and its own cessation both attain full comprehension with no fetter exhausted at all, reveals something precise about what a fetter actually tracks: a fetter is bound to the completed, functioning path of cutting-off specifically, not to the mere fact of craving for a given ground having ended, since it is only the path itself — the active engagement with cutting off affliction — that the fetters' own final exhaustion is keyed to.

3. Realization Through Cessation, Applied to All Three Modifiers

The parallel realization-through-cessation gateway is worked through with the same three modifiers, its own answers converging on a single dramatic threshold: for nearly every faculty, whether taken directly, as its own cessation, or as its own path of cutting-off, the complete realization of all ninety-eight latent tendencies and all nine fetters occurs only upon attaining the fruit of arhatship itself — the intermediate stages exhausting only a handful of latent tendencies at a time, with no fetter yet fully realized, until that final threshold is crossed.

Reading note — Ru-Yi

The repeated refrain "only upon reaching arhatship are all ninety-eight latent tendencies realized through cessation, and all nine fetters exhausted," recurring after nearly every partial count in this section, is the clearest possible statement of just how total this final attainment is understood to be: whatever partial progress a practitioner makes along the way — three latent tendencies here, thirty-one there — none of it constitutes the complete realization this gateway is tracking until literally every one of the ninety-eight latent tendencies and all nine fetters have been accounted for at once.

4. The Fivefold Bondage Classification, Applied to Direct Presence, Cessation, and the Path

A new fivefold classification opens — the nine fetters, the three bonds, ten latent tendencies (a distinct, tenfold reckoning), six defilements, and ten entanglements — worked through for each faculty's own bare presence, its own cessation, and its own path of cutting-off in turn: in every single case, without exception, the answer is the maximal one — bound by all nine fetters, all three bonds, all ten latent tendencies, all six defilements, and all ten entanglements.

The eye faculty, up through the formless realm's own latent tendency of ignorance abandoned by cultivation, taken each in turn — among the nine fetters, how many fetters bind it? Among the three bonds, how many bonds bind it? Among the ten latent tendencies, how many latent tendencies increase with respect to it? Among the six defilements, how many defilements taint it? Among the ten entanglements, how many entanglements entangle it? That every single faculty, under every one of these three modifiers, returns the identical maximal answer — nothing partial, nothing exceptional — before the treatise moves on to the far more differentiated possession-based breakdown that follows immediately after, is a deliberate contrast: this section establishes the baseline maximum that applies to a faculty considered in the abstract, against which the next section's elaborate staged reductions, tied to a specific practitioner's own actual progress, can be measured.

5. Who Possesses, Cross-Referenced with the Fivefold Bondage Classification

The treatise now cross-references possession with this same fivefold classification, tracking, stage by stage, exactly how the count of fetters, bonds, latent tendencies, defilements, and entanglements binding a possessor of the eye faculty shrinks as that possessor progresses along the path — from an ordinary being not yet free of any defilement, bound by the full complement of nine fetters and ten latent tendencies, down through successive milestones of the path of seeing (marked by the class-knowledge of suffering, then of the path, arising in turn) and the path of cultivation (marked by progressive freedom from the desire realm's, then the first dhyāna's, then the formless realm's own defilement), until the fully liberated "faculty of one who has come to know fully" is reached, bound by no fetter whatsoever.

The answer: for whoever possesses the eye faculty up through the "faculty of one who has come to know fully," taken as object both directly and as an object-of-that-object, the various fetters that bind him, up through the various entanglements that entangle him, should be understood exactly as stated before for whoever possesses the eye faculty. The meaning pertaining to the remaining chapters should be understood according to this same pattern.

Reading note — Ru-Yi

Watching the same five numbers — fetters, bonds, latent tendencies, defilements, entanglements — tick downward in lockstep at each successive milestone of the path, from nine and ten all the way to nothing at all, turns this entire classification into something close to a odometer for spiritual progress: a practitioner's own exact position on the path can, in principle, be read directly off which combination of these five counts currently applies to him, each stage of freedom from a given ground's defilement registering as a precise, countable reduction rather than a vague qualitative improvement.

6. Possession of Cessation and the Path, Ground by Ground

The same possession-based fivefold classification is worked through again for each faculty's own cessation and its own path of cutting-off, this time organized primarily by ground rather than by the sixteen mind-moments of the path of seeing — an ordinary being within the desire realm bound by the full nine fetters, one within the sphere of infinite consciousness or above bound by only six, and so on, down through each faculty's own characteristic threshold (the second dhyāna for the female and male faculties, the third for pleasure, the fourth for joy) before which its own cessation or path of cutting-off cannot yet be said to be unpossessed at all.

For whoever possesses the eye faculty, up through the formless realm's own latent tendency of ignorance abandoned by cultivation, its own path of cutting-off — how many fetters bind him, up through how many entanglements entangle him? The answer: for whoever possesses the eye faculty up through the five faculties of faith and the rest's own path of cutting-off, the various fetters that bind him, up through the various entanglements that entangle him, should likewise be understood exactly as stated before for whoever possesses the mind faculty's own cessation. The meaning pertaining to the remaining chapters should be understood according to this same pattern.

Reading note — Ru-Yi

That each faculty carries its own distinct threshold ground before its own cessation can first be said to be unpossessed — the second dhyāna for the sexed faculties, the third for pleasure, the fourth for joy — is a quiet confirmation of exactly where each faculty itself ceases to operate: a faculty's own cessation cannot become unpossessed at some arbitrary point in the cosmology, only at the specific ground beyond which the faculty itself, and therefore anything that could be a cessation of it, no longer has anywhere left to be found.

7. Non-Possession, Cross-Referenced with the Fivefold Bondage Classification

The fascicle closes with the mirror image of the entire preceding cross-reference: for whoever does not possess a given faculty — its own bare presence, its own cessation, its own path of cutting-off, taken directly or as an object-of-that-object — the same fivefold count of fetters, bonds, latent tendencies, defilements, and entanglements is worked out symmetrically, closing with the treatise's own final gesture handing the remaining permutations over to the reader: the remaining gateways should be discerned and stated according to the pattern already given.

For whoever does not possess the pleasure-faculty's own cessation: it should be said that he must be within the third dhyāna still bound by every fetter, or within the sphere of infinite space or above. As for whoever does not possess the joy-faculty's own cessation: if he is an ordinary being within the desire realm still bound by every fetter, he is bound by all nine fetters, bound by all three bonds, increased by all ten latent tendencies, tainted by all six defilements, and entangled by all ten entanglements. If within the fourth dhyāna or above, he is bound by six fetters, bound by two bonds, increased by nine latent tendencies, tainted by one defilement, and entangled by two entanglements. If he is a noble one still bound by every fetter, at the very first instant of entering the fixed state of freedom from birth, he is bound by all nine fetters, bound by all three bonds, increased by all ten latent tendencies, tainted by all six defilements, and entangled by all ten entanglements. As for whoever does not possess the sorrow-faculty's own cessation being just the same, with the following distinction: it should be said that he must be within the second dhyāna or above. As for whoever does not possess the life faculty's or the five faculties of faith and the rest's own cessation: the various fetters that bind him, up through the various entanglements that entangle him — if he is an ordinary being, should be understood exactly as stated before for every ordinary being not yet free of the desire realm's own defilement; if he is a noble one abiding in the path of seeing or of cultivation, should be understood exactly as stated before for every noble one not yet free of the desire realm's own defilement while abiding in the path of seeing or of cultivation. As for whoever does not possess the mind- or equanimity-faculty's own cessation: whether he is an ordinary being still bound by every fetter, or a noble one still bound by every fetter, at the very first instant of entering the fixed state of freedom from birth, he is, in either case, bound by all nine fetters, bound by all three bonds, increased by all ten latent tendencies,

For whoever does not possess the eye faculty, up through the formless realm's own latent tendency of ignorance abandoned by cultivation, itself abandoned through cessation, taken as object both directly and as an object-of-that-object — how many fetters bind him, up through how many entanglements entangle him? The answer: for whoever does not possess the eye faculty's own cessation taken as a direct object: he is bound by six fetters, bound by two bonds, increased by nine latent tendencies, tainted by one defilement, and entangled by two entanglements. As for whoever does not possess the ear, nose, tongue, body, pleasure-, and joy-faculties' own cessation taken as a direct object, and whoever does not possess the female, male, suffering-, and sorrow-faculties' own cessation taken as a direct object and as an object-of-that-object, being just the same: the meaning pertaining to the remaining chapters should be understood according to this same pattern.

Reading note — Ru-Yi

That non-possession of a faculty can itself carry a nonzero count of fetters and latent tendencies — someone who does not yet possess the body faculty at all is still bound by six fetters and nine latent tendencies, not zero — is a genuinely counterintuitive result worth pausing on: not possessing a faculty is not the same as having transcended everything that faculty is bound up with, since the very absence of a faculty (as in the formless realm, which lacks form altogether) can itself still be accompanied by whatever affliction belongs to the state of not yet having progressed past needing that faculty in the first place.

Fascicle 92 Complete

This closes fascicle 92 of Ru-Yi's translation, drawn from the treatise's true CBETA boundary. Fascicle 92 closed out the possession gateway for the path of cutting-off carried over from fascicle 91 (結蘊第二中十門納息第四之二十二), worked through the full-comprehension and realization-through-cessation gateways across all three modifiers, opened a new fivefold bondage classification (nine fetters, three bonds, ten latent tendencies, six defilements, ten entanglements), and closed with an elaborate staged cross-reference between possession and this same fivefold classification, tracking a practitioner's own progress along the entire path from ordinary being to full liberation. This closes the Fetters Aggregate (結蘊) in its entirety — fascicle 93 opens the Knowledge Aggregate (智蘊), the third of the treatise's eight great aggregates, beginning its own new nyāsa on the eight branches of the learner's path (學支納息第一之一).
