Why this discourse

Confirmed by direct reading, after SN 55.41-45 gave the four factors five successive new framings — merit, merit again with rivers, merit again with wisdom, riches, riches with fame — this discourse's own title, “plain” (suddhaka), signals a deliberate return to the bare, unadorned “stream-enterer” formula this project first met in full at SN 55.2, matching the identical naming convention already confirmed at SN 54.3.

Reading guide

A return, not a new development

This project's own direct comparison: this discourse's own content is not genuinely new but a reversion to this saṃyutta's own earliest, most basic statement of the formula — confirming that beneath the five successive reframings just given, the underlying content has not changed at all.

A naming convention already recognized

This project's own cross-reference: the same “plain version” title already appeared at SN 54.3, there marking an identical return to the bare sixteen-step breathing formula after SN 54.1-2's own elaborations — confirming this is a recognized structural device across this book, not unique to this saṃyutta.

Key terms

suddhaka — “plain, unadorned” — this discourse's own title, marking a deliberate return to the bare formula
sotāpanno avinipātadhammo niyato sambodhiparāyaṇo — “a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, assured, destined for awakening” — this saṃyutta's own original closing description, restored here
aveccappasāda — “experiential confidence” — the shared term for confidence in the Buddha, teaching, and Saṅgha, unchanged throughout this saṃyutta
ariyakantehi sīlehi samannāgato — “has the ethical conduct loved by the noble ones” — the fourth factor, restored to its own original form
suddhikasutta — the identical naming pattern already confirmed at SN 54.3, there marking a return to the bare sixteen-step breathing formula

The text

Every genuinely translated fragment given in the consulted English source. Translation: Bhikkhu Sujato (CC0, SuttaCentral).

§1“Mendicants, a noble disciple who has four things is a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, assured, destined for awakening. What four? It’s when a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the Buddha … the teaching … the Saṅgha … And they have the ethical conduct loved by the noble ones … leading to immersion. A noble disciple who has these four things is a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, assured, destined for awakening.”
