The Ten Kinds of Direct Realization Begin
建立現觀, the classification of direct realization, opens with ten kinds spanning the entire path from the earliest aid toward liberation all the way through the culminating path already examined in Parts 67 through 69 — beginning with realization of the Dharma itself, of its meaning, of reality directly seen, and of everything subsequently cultivated on that basis.
1. The List of Ten
云何建立現觀?略有十種,謂法現觀、義現觀、真現觀、後現觀、寶現觀、不行現觀、究竟現觀、聲聞現觀、獨覺現觀、菩薩現觀。
What is the classification of direct realization? In brief, there are ten kinds: realization of the Dharma, realization of its meaning, realization of reality, subsequent realization, realization of the three jewels, realization of non-recurrence, culminating realization, śrāvaka realization, pratyekabuddha realization, and bodhisattva realization.
2. Realization of the Dharma, Its Meaning, and Reality
What is realization of the Dharma? It is the strong degree of pure faith and resolute conviction concerning the exalted teaching of the truths, proceeding by faith. What is realization of its meaning? It is the strong degree of the forbearance that examines the truths, concerning that same exalted teaching — a forbearance situated at the aid toward penetrating insight, brought forth through the three kinds of correct mental application, and itself further divided into three grades: strong-mild, strong-moderate, and strong-strong. What is realization of reality? It is the noble path present throughout the sixteen mind-instants already attained on the path of seeing. Further, within the path of seeing, the conventional wisdom that establishes the truths at the very edge of this direct realization does not yet manifest; it is only at the stage of the path of cultivation that this conventional wisdom can actually manifest.
These first three realizations map directly onto ground already covered in earlier parts of this treatise. Realization of the Dharma is simply the strong degree of the aid toward liberation examined in Part 85, proceeding by faith rather than direct engagement with the truths themselves. Realization of its meaning is the strong degree of the aid toward penetrating insight, also examined in Part 85, now subdivided a further three ways at its very strongest grade. And realization of reality is exactly the sixteen mind-instants of the path of seeing already examined across Parts 87 through 89 in the classification of persons — the very same attainment, now viewed from the angle of what is realized rather than who realizes it. T1606 adds a further clarifying point: the path of seeing itself, still wholly absorbed in direct, unmediated realization, does not yet permit the ordinary conventional wisdom that would explicitly formulate and establish the truths in conceptual terms — that more discursive articulation only becomes possible afterward, once the path of cultivation has begun.
3. Subsequent Realization, Realization of the Three Jewels, and Non-Recurrence
What is subsequent realization? It is the entire path of cultivation. What is realization of the three jewels? It is verified purity of faith in the Buddha, verified purity of faith in the Dharma, and verified purity of faith in the Saṅgha. What is realization of non-recurrence? It is this: one who has already attained the restraint that requires no further deliberate action, though still standing at the level of a trainee, knows with certainty: "I have now exhausted rebirth in the hells, exhausted rebirth as an animal, exhausted rebirth as a hungry ghost, exhausted falling into the lower destinies — I will never again create the karma that leads to the lower destinies, or experience the ripened result those destinies would bring."
T1606 explains realization of non-recurrence as a specific certainty granted the moment the path of seeing is completed: even one still standing as a trainee, with further work of cultivation still ahead, already possesses a settled, effortless moral restraint that has permanently closed off any further possibility of falling into the lower destinies — not because further deliberate vigilance is required to prevent it, but because the very conditions that could produce such a rebirth have already been permanently removed. This certainty of never again falling, T1606 notes, is what stream-entry's own three severed fetters, already examined in Part 87, directly guarantee.
Part 95 Complete
The first six of the ten kinds of direct realization are now examined. Part 96 turns to the seventh, culminating realization — already examined at length in the treatise's earlier account of the culminating path — together with the three vehicle-specific realizations of the śrāvaka, the pratyekabuddha, and the bodhisattva.
