Culminating Realization, and the Three Vehicles' Realization
The seventh of the ten kinds of direct realization is exactly the culminating path already examined at length in Parts 67 through 69 — and the final three kinds sort the seven realizations preceding it by vehicle: heard from a teacher for the śrāvaka, discovered without one for the pratyekabuddha, and, for the bodhisattva alone, cultivated as forbearance without ever pausing to verify it directly.
1. Culminating Realization
何等究竟現觀?如道諦中究竟道說。
What is culminating realization? It is exactly as already stated concerning the culminating path within the truth of the path.
T1606 simply confirms the cross-reference: culminating realization is the vajra-like concentration, the permanent stilling of every coarse heaviness, and the full attainment of freedom-from-bondage already examined in careful detail across Parts 67 through 69. Nothing further is added here, since that earlier treatment already covers this seventh realization completely.
2. Śrāvaka Realization, Pratyekabuddha Realization, and Bodhisattva Realization
What is śrāvaka realization? It is the seven realizations already described, attained specifically by hearing another's teaching — hence it is called śrāvaka realization. What is pratyekabuddha realization? It is those same seven realizations, attained specifically without relying on another's teaching — hence it is called pratyekabuddha realization. What is bodhisattva realization? It is this: bodhisattvas, with respect to those same seven realizations, give rise to and cultivate forbearance concerning them without directly verifying them, and it is specifically upon the bodhisattva ground of Utter Joy that bodhisattvas enter the certainty of correctness — this is what is called bodhisattva realization.
T1606 explains precisely why the bodhisattva's own realization takes this distinctive, deliberately withheld form: bodhisattvas, for two specific reasons, cultivate the same forbearance toward the seven realizations that a śrāvaka or pratyekabuddha would use to directly verify and attain them, but stop short of that direct verification itself. First, in order to become genuinely skilled in the specific methods needed to guide and train śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas — a skill best developed by deeply understanding their path from the inside without actually taking the exit it offers. And second, out of compassionate concern for sentient beings, since fully verifying these seven realizations in the śrāvaka or pratyekabuddha manner would mean actually departing through their more limited vehicle rather than remaining engaged with beings still needing guidance. It is specifically upon reaching the first bodhisattva ground, Utter Joy, that this same certainty of correctness — the very entry point already examined for the śrāvaka in Part 87's account of stream-entry — is instead attained through the bodhisattva's own distinctive path, forbearance cultivated to its fullest without the final step of direct verification a śrāvaka would take.
Part 96 Complete
Culminating realization and the three vehicles' realization are now examined, completing the treatise's list of ten. Part 97 turns to the treatise's own eleven-fold comparison of śrāvaka realization against bodhisattva realization — object, provisions, penetration, vow, deliverance, and more — the distinctions that set the bodhisattva's path apart at every stage.
