The Whole Sūtra, in Five Sections.

The Fahua Xuanyi ("Profound Meaning of the Lotus Sūtra") is Zhiyi's account of the sūtra's own doctrinal architecture — not a line-by-line gloss, as the Fahua Wenju is, but a system built entirely around his own fivefold scheme: Explaining the Name, Clarifying the Essence, Clarifying the Cardinal Doctrine, Discussing the Function, and Classifying the Teachings. Together with the Fahua Wenju and the Mohe Zhiguan, it forms the "Tiantai Three Great Works on the Lotus." Ru-Yi's own translation of all ten fascicles is now complete — this page is the entrance for reading it fascicle by fascicle.

How to read this collection

Zhiyi delivered this treatise as oral lectures, recorded and edited by his disciple Guanding into the ten-fascicle text preserved in the Taishō canon. Unlike the Fahua Wenju, it never proceeds sequentially through the sūtra's own chapters at all — it is organized entirely around Zhiyi's fivefold scheme, applied first in brief outline through his own "sevenfold common exposition," then unfolded at enormous length, above all in Explaining the Name through the doctrine of the "ten wondrous aspects" of the trace gate and the origin gate, which alone occupies roughly three-quarters of the entire treatise. Scriptural citations throughout are short, usually a single phrase, functioning as proof-texts embedded within a continuous, tightly argued philosophical exposition — this translation follows the source's own paragraph breaks rather than pairing sentence by sentence, the closer fit for continuous argument rather than verse-by-verse commentary.

This site already carries Ru-Yi's own translation of the Lotus Sūtra itself, and its direct sibling, the Fahua Wenju, Zhiyi's line-by-line commentary on that same sūtra. Terminology here is kept consistent with both, and with this site's other Zhiyi/Tiantai translations — the Mohe Zhiguan, the Shi Chan Boluomi Cidi Famen, and the Xiao Zhiguan Jiangyi — and with the Jiaoguan Gangzong, which cites the Fahua Xuanyi itself repeatedly as an authority.

What each fascicle page includes

  • The Chinese source text beside our English translation, paired by paragraph.
  • Reading notes explaining the fivefold scheme, the ten wondrous aspects, and difficult passages as they first appear.
  • A running glossary so terminology stays consistent from fascicle 1 onward.

名 / 體 / 宗 / 用 / 教 — the five sectionsExplaining the Name, Clarifying the Essence, Clarifying the Cardinal Doctrine, Discussing the Function, and Classifying the Teachings — the fivefold scheme that gives this treatise its entire structure. Explaining the Name alone occupies roughly three-quarters of the whole work.
七番共解 — the sevenfold common expositionZhiyi's own method, applied to all five sections at once before each is unfolded separately: marking the section, citing proof-texts, showing its arising in sequence, opening and combining it with other schemes, resolving doubts, the contemplation of mind, and reconciling it with other terms.
十妙 — the ten wondrous aspectsObject, wisdom, practice, stage, the three tracks, sympathetic response, spiritual powers, teaching the Dharma, the retinue, and merit and benefit — applied once to the trace gate (chapters 1–14 of the sūtra) and once to the origin gate (chapters 15–28), the doctrinal heart of Explaining the Name.
迹門 / 本門 — the trace gate and the origin gateThe same division this site's Fahua Wenju translation uses: chapters 1–14 concern the Buddha's trace within this one lifetime; chapters 15–28 concern his origin, awakened since a time immeasurably long past.
十如是 / 十法界 / 一念三千 — the ten suchnesses, the ten dharma-realms, and three thousand realms in a single thoughtFascicle 2's doctrine of the ten suchnesses applied across the ten dharma-realms is the direct seed of "three thousand realms in a single thought," worked out at full length in the Mohe Zhiguan.
四悉檀 — the four siddhāntasThe mundane, the individual, the therapeutic, and the ultimate-meaning siddhānta, following the Fahua Wenju's own phrasing as this treatise's closer sibling.
三藏教 / 通教 / 別教 / 圓教 — the four teachingsThe Tripiṭaka teaching, the shared teaching, the distinct teaching, and the perfect teaching — the classification scheme this treatise's own final fascicle establishes in full, alongside the Five Periods.
實相 — the real markClarifying the Essence's own central term: the single true reality underlying every apparent name, distinguished from what is false and shown to be the essence not merely of this sūtra, but of every sūtra and every practice.
