One Buddha as Every Buddha

The paired equivalences continue: one land as every land, one dharma as every dharma, one sentient being as every sentient being, one buddha as every buddha — each held without destroying the mark of the individual — before the three times themselves are folded into a single thought.

Without Destroying a Single Mark

Ru-Yi Translation

"… of one who takes every land as a single land, and a single land as every land, yet without destroying the mark of any land; of one who takes a single dharma as every dharma, and every dharma as a single dharma, yet without destroying the mark of any dharma; of one who takes a single sentient being as every sentient being, and every sentient being as a single sentient being, yet understands sentient beings as without any difference; of one who takes a single buddha as every buddha, and every buddha as a single buddha, yet understands every buddha as without any duality; of one who takes the three times as a single thought, and a single thought as the three times; of one who, within a single thought, goes to every land … [the reflection continues]"

Reading note — after Fazang

Each pairing here runs in both directions — one as all, and all as one — carefully qualified each time by "without destroying the mark," a phrase this passage repeats precisely to forestall a natural misreading: this is not a claim that individual lands, dharmas, or beings collapse into a formless unity, but that totality and particularity hold together without either canceling the other. Fazang reads the buddha-pairing's own distinct qualifier — "without any duality" rather than "without destroying marks" — as marking a subtle difference: buddhas are one not merely without erasing distinction but at a level where distinction itself does not properly apply.

Part 282 In Progress

The paired equivalences continue to build. Part 283 continues with universally illumining and benefiting every sentient being, and never abandoning beings even while transcending them.
