A Refuge for Beings Without Refuge

From every single pore, in every single thought-moment, there came forth buddhas of the three times equal in number to the motes of dust of every world, filling the whole of space, becoming a refuge for beings who have no refuge; from every single pore, in every single thought-moment, there came forth pure buddha-lands equal in number to the motes of dust of every world, filled throughout with buddhas and bodhisattvas, teaching and maturing boundless sentient beings; from every single pore, in every single thought-moment, there came forth pure-and-impure buddha-lands equal in number to the motes of dust of every world, filling the whole of space, causing every defiled being there to become entirely pure; from every single pore, in every single thought-moment, there came forth impure-and-pure lands equal in number to the motes of dust of every world, taming every impure being there; and from every single pore, in every single thought-moment, there came forth clouds of the bodies of every sentient being equal in number to the motes of dust of every world, according with the world, teaching and transforming sentient beings.

Ru-Yi Translation

Reading note — after Fazang

The careful distinction here between "pure-and-impure" lands (where defilement is being actively purified) and "impure-and-pure" lands (where impure beings are being tamed toward eventual purity) names two directions of the same transformative process — purification of place and taming of person — occurring simultaneously across countless worlds within every single thought-moment of a single pore's own activity. Fazang reads "becoming a refuge for beings who have no refuge" as this stretch's own emotional center: amid the vision's otherwise near-mechanical repetition of "equal in number to the motes of dust of every world," this single phrase names the concrete, compassionate purpose underlying the entire cosmic display — beings who have nowhere else to turn are precisely what all this boundless activity exists to address.

Part 421 Complete

This stretch of thought-moment emanations is now given in full. Part 422 continues with clouds of bodhisattva bodies at every stage — from those newly raising the mind of bodhi to those praising Samantabhadra's own wondrous practice — and with buddhas newly attaining awakening, arising in the world.
