Cariyapitaka

The Basket of Conduct

The Cariyapitaka ("Basket of Conduct") is a Khuddaka Nikāya collection of thirty-five verse stories in which the Buddha, speaking in the first person, recounts past lives spent practicing one of the perfections (pāramī) on the way to Buddhahood. Of the ten perfections named in the wider tradition, this particular collection dedicates stories to seven — giving (ten stories), ethics (ten), renunciation (five), truth (six), love (two), resolve (one), and equanimity (one) — leaving patience, energy, and wisdom without a story of their own here.

This collection is complete, all thirty-five stories across its three chapters. Each entry has the same reading guide, full Sujato translation, and self-check quiz as our other series.
